Most of those OS's don't come with python or ruby and the perl that does come with them tends to be old and not have very many useful modules already. Learn ksh/bash and you can write scripts on any modern Unix-like OS; only learn perl/ruby/python/current-flavor-of-the-day-language and you won't.

The big issue is once you get above local government; i.e. city, county, etc; the rules are stacked against a candidate that doesn't have a D or an R next to their name. Mostly it has to do with who gets matching campaign funds from the Federal Election Commission and the state versions of it. It's damn near impossible for a 3rd party candidate to get funds to run at a state level. In fact, the only time I can remember it happening was when Jesse Ventura was the governor from Wisconsin.

  18. Smaller Groups on Discuss the US Presidential Election & Health Care · · Score: 2, Interesting

Government programs tend to work well in small groups. For example, Canada has about the same number of people in the whole country that the state of California does by itself. I don't have an issue with universal health care but it'd be better it if were administered by the states with minimal federal involvement. However, none of the current politicians seem to want that.

As an example, do any of our Massachusetts readers have experience with their new Commonwealth Care http://www.mahealthconnector.org/portal/site/connector/? There's about the same number of people in MA as there is in a single province in Canada so it should be a good example.
