Don't forget that there's still a lot of commercial unix in the work place. Most of those OS's don't come with python or ruby and the perl that does come with them tends to be old and not have very many useful modules already. Learn ksh/bash and you can write scripts on any modern Unix-like OS; only learn perl/ruby/python/current-flavor-of-the-day-language and you won't.
Um, have you tried Virtual Dimension: http://virt-dimension.sourceforge.net/ ? I don't know if it works on > Vista but it has worked great for me on Windows 2000 and XP.
I agree. I bought my daughter a Vostro 200 with a C2D 2.0, 2 GB, DVD+-RW and 250GB drive for $400 shipped about a year ago. While it probably won't run Crysis, it does quite well with things like Half-Life 2 and Sims2 even though it's got an integrated graphics card.
Oh, and since I ordered it from the Dell Business side, the only cr@pware installed on it was the Google Desktop and Acrobat Reader.
I have a lazy eye as well and when we saw Coraline, I spent about 50% of the movie watching without the glasses. It seemed to alleviate the headache and the 3D wasn't too bad without the glasses. The old red/blue movies I could see with the glasses on and I was fine.
Um, he said Sparc 4's (which came out in 1995 sometime) and a dial-up ISP. I'm betting he's talking the 1995 or 1996 time frame for the set up. I don't know about you, but in 1995, I was making less than 50K per year. I would have loved to been making 7K gross.
The big issue is once you get above local government; i.e. city, county, etc; the rules are stacked against a candidate that doesn't have a D or an R next to their name. Mostly it has to do with who gets matching campaign funds from the Federal Election Commission and the state versions of it. It's damn near impossible for a 3rd party candidate to get funds to run at a state level. In fact, the only time I can remember it happening was when Jesse Ventura was the governor from Wisconsin.
Government programs tend to work well in small groups. For example, Canada has about the same number of people in the whole country that the state of California does by itself. I don't have an issue with universal health care but it'd be better it if were administered by the states with minimal federal involvement. However, none of the current politicians seem to want that.
As an example, do any of our Massachusetts readers have experience with their new Commonwealth Care http://www.mahealthconnector.org/portal/site/connector/? There's about the same number of people in MA as there is in a single province in Canada so it should be a good example.
I'm the same way. I've reading/. since it was "Chips and Dips" hosted on the Multia in Taco's dorm room. I have no clue how I found it initially, but my bookmark for it was added on 4/3/1998. I didn't feel the need to create a user id until the whole page lengthening/widening fiasco a couple of years later when it became necessary to browse at +1 to make the page readable.
Um, you would be wrong about the availability of 9-track tapes and drives. A decade or so ago, we had these http://www.sunstarco.com/Tape%20Drives/Cipher/cipher_m990.htm attached to a PC for transfer of data from a mainframe that wasn't allowed FTP access. I imagine you could find interfaces and cables on eBay.
The negative sample is probably right. If you look at the wave form sample, you can see where it drops. I think he's looking for errors in the data from the tape.
The command line is simple the is to redirect stdout to the output file of choice.
For the people not getting it, a " 3 metre resident of Warsaw" is an ~10 foot Pole. :)
It's bullshit. Paying interest doesn't help your credit score at all. Read this http://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/1s9u4g/your_friend_is_an_idiot_and_youre_wasting_your/. I realize it's a reddit post but it is true.

Um, Sonny Bono wasn't part of the Senate, he was a member of the US House of Representatives.
A better choice for the Senate would have been Fred Thompson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Thompson or Al Franken http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Franken.
When I click on your link, I get redirected to the non-SSL version of the page so it might still be a subscriber-only thing.

I got it but I'm a geek for WWII trivia. And comparing Rommel to Monty is like comparing Bill to Darl. :)
It's not an image all, it's a calculator to tell you how big a picture you're going to get depending on type and size, etc.

Um, since /. is a .org, not a .com, perhaps slashdot.com is a blog site. :-D

Well, technically, BOB wasn't an OS, but a shell on top of Windows 3.11.
One positive about BOB was it was where Bill met the future Mrs Gates.
I use dansguardian on Hardy Heron for filtering my daughter's access. I like the fact that I can adjust just what gets blocked as she gets older.
However, I do believe the best filter is the one where parents practice that ago old filter of "No, you can't do that".

Do an eBay search for "MARPAT camo" or "CADPAT camo" and you should be able to find some. Or are you just trolling?
Actually, you don't need fingerd running if you looking at the local machine. IIRC it reads the local wtmp or wtmpx file to get the information.

Not the grandparent, but how about "Someone wake me up when there's a 1TB SSD for $250" instead :)
Um, no, Google meets Slashdot: Sloogle. :)
Um, I was actually thinking he meant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigs_in_Space "Pigs in Space" from "The Muppet Show"

It's there, it's number 4. And having written code on most of these, it wasn't too bad once you got used to it.
