okay overated? I realize its not that funny but to mod me down from 2??? I was legitimately pointing out that the poster said that the 20 machine cluster was the story, I thought he was mistaken...
wow that is such a fluff piece, it says that the actual information will be released later on, it doesn't mention the species of plants looked at, it doesn't explain much other then they look at byproducts and that they want to help the crew survive...:) where is the geeky stuff?
the grandparent post had a valid point, the technical achievement of an orbiting telescope that has worked for the majority of its time in space, without being touched by anyone (yes I do know about lens issue) is amazing. this is a very cool telescope by its own merit but the Hubble is an amazing device... now lets see how long till we can get one of thee airborne
well where do we set the line on what information can be shared? without credit agencies (who have so much personal data on you, it would freak you out) lending would drop and it would hamper economic growth.
The difference between physical goods and information is enormous. And this is not something that has to be out in the open, I give advice based off of trends that I see given proprietary information all the time. Am I allowed to give that advice, yes! Am I allowed to give that information I see, no!.. however I have run a "successful" consulting business based off of information analysis and I can tell you how easy it is to move data around. And 99% of the time, it doesn't involve selling or buying of data.
for such a geek icon, google has not been evil but has displayed a very neutral stance as apposed to activist when it comes to specific things. I realise that now as a publicly traded company, they might benefit from that neutrality, but I think they could be very powerful tool towords geek goals (anti- cesorship, and personal information protection)..
I guess you missed this story then... if there ever was an example of google being evil, it would not be that.. if you read beyond the headline, the article and actually think about it (or read some of the comments) this is a piece of software that does what it says its going to do, and could be abused... just like my high quality cutlery. economic pressure and Political censorship might be better tools
Coolness. If there was any one company I would trust to "Do no evil", it would be Google.
I would agree if it was based on classification of who of the companys who have as much influence on the world as google, would Do No Evil, but googl bows to much to comercial and political views for me to trust it anymore.. maybe 4 years ago, but now that so many people use it, the powers that be are focusing their attention on it...
Trust me, if something originated here and somehow was tranferred somewhere else and the US wasn't pleased with that, it'd quickly be taken care of.
I wish I could agree with your optimism. We have enough troubles with our physical borders let alone digital ones... I doubt we would have much success in curtailing information transfers...
I agree with your premise, I just don't think it would work. everyone needs to keep some private information about a person, its combining it that makes it dangerous and annoying. Credit agencies for example have SO MUCH information about you, and the amount of info on Lexus-Nexus is amazing, I found out there are professionals out there who work for rich people and try to keep their assets out of these databases... I wonder what would happen if lexus-nexus was taken down
that makes sense, but how do you find someone who exports personal data? and how do you setup a system that tracks the sale of the illegally exported information? it sounds great, just not very enforceable
guess not, if Rainer was blowing, I would probably spending a lot less time on slashdot and a lot more time deciding how the hell to get out of the puget sound area...:)
as a resident of a "large" unnamed metropolis in close proximity, It is my honor to give my life to the Linux cause, holding my place in secret and not fleeing; in case of alerting the Microsoft Suburbs. We true geeks of Seattle huddle by the glow of our computer screens and share one last minute of Slashdot as we await the inevitable flow of monopoly ending ash.
Let it be said that we went down, without fear as we hastily tried to upload our porn collections to a separate, safer place, so that our lives, and porn collecting will not have been in vain.
no really, I have no clue, I might because I need to run Office without the hassle of windows but I also need it for 3rd party applications that do not run on a Mac. so no... I don't know, don't ask questions that don't have an easy yes no answer
the $1000 wrenches, do you have some back up for that? I would love to see it. I know about some of the things taking a lot of money but a lot of those are for safety reasons, and the majority of the proof I've seen for this is for military, some justified, some not (in my understanding)

oh well
That blast came from the Death Star! That thing's operational!
ohh bad joke.. yeah I get it but dude poor taste!
I have one of those... in a spare room!
Who cares about a 20 system cluster, I want a one 512 processor machine!
or 20, I'm not that picky
I was looking for a "+1 I hate you, you lucky bastard" mod but I couldn't find it... this reply will have to do

It reminds me of the movie; Toys

okay the poster here is saying that if a foreign country hosts information that violates US laws, we are going to enact more laws???
I think if they did something like that, we'd be more likely to invade, though I'd prefer the stronger laws...
yeah, except it was a joke, yah get it?
:)

of course grey is all relative
download the whole internet !
not according to your sig
hehe, the unhealthy behavior is probably more in a rather cryptic nod to babylon 5 then in the anti MS behavior :)
:)
if you need the referance I can probably find it somewhere.. or probably another slashdot user has it bookmarked

please tell me that was a joke,
if you disagree with company policy, don't work there.
stop complaining.
Rude boy will get fired on monday as he deserves to be, but SETI@home running on a server without permission is not cool.
well it was cmdrtaco who did the post :)
