The problem I had with Netware and eDirectory was the price. After pricing the system out for our needs, I was running close to the cost of a MS system. So why would I jump into buying a product which costs almost as much as MS's, and then having to deal with users who everytime we have a problem are going to blame the IT group for buying it because we are such haters of MS .
It would help if they did some more advertising though.
It is much easier to use GoDaddy for web services just because they advertise during the SuperBowl.
Man I never understood the power of 30 seconds during the Super Bowl until I came out into the real world.
All they would need to do is show a monkey typing on a computer with a network screen in front of him and executives will talk about it. Just need to throw in a woman dancing and Purchase Requests would sail right through.

I'm more liberal than most, but would have to agree with this ruling.
What they said in the majority opinion was that any organization profit , or non-profit could speak out on behalf of a candidate. Corporations or Unions still cannot give money directly to campaigns or elections, but have a right to organize and spend money on political ads, they cannot do this in concert with any campaign or political party.
I think the dissent was very very well meaning and discussed my feelings and original disgust with the ruling. I'll paraphrase "the earlier laws were there to prevent corporations from undermining self government".
In summary the ruling basically said that any organization can voice an opinion on a matter within the first amendment protection.

Prior to this if a candidate were to run using part of their platform as "Free and Open Source Software is a waste of taxpayers money". We can organize, put money together and make a 30 minute advertisement on why this person is wrong and why free and open source software is good. Without this ruling, we would have been prevented from making such an ad, because it could be deemed a political advertisement by an organization and we could have been banned/prevented from airing it ( possibly through injuction) until after the election, based on the laws this ruling overturned.

Prior to this we could only (as individuals) given money to another candidate and asked them to address the issue.

Right now one of the major selling points of a vehicle is its resale value. So if they were to put an agreement such as this on a vehicle it would definitely hurt sales.
But I think certain segments of the DVD and CD industry could readily adopt this.
Their biggest problem would be in tying a license directly to a DVD or CD. But it isn't a far step from the warranties which are sold at stores, where you have to keep the piece of paper for a year or go online to validate the warranty. I'm sure everyone would just go home and throw it in the trash, and not think about the legal repercussions.
It would be fun to watch though.
Especially with my neat freak , anal retentive, music loving cousin. She hates dealing with receipts. This might even blow a fuse somewhere. I can already see the spiral between the music rack and the waste basket.

Just as an FYI, while working with executive level of people I have found a large percentage who exhibit sociopathic behavior. So I'm not sure that just jumping to another job is going to do the trick.
People like this often do rise to the top, sometimes they get in trouble and sometimes they don't. But if you are working a job like this you damn well better figure out who they are.
Earlier in my career I met one who was flying to the top of the food chain. Through his badgering and insistence (manipulation) on a job being done a certain way it led to the death of someone I knew. The interesting part was the way people around and knew the situation reacted. Some were down right pissed and others blamed the victim (Should have known this wasn't the right thing to do). I was on the pissed side.
You never confront these people head on. You may crack their ego, but you never are going to get them to become more self aware. They are always going to blame others, if they recognize that there is any blame. I have actually seen people get sent to psychiatrict counseling ( go to counseling or lose your job), when it wasn't them that was in need of counseling. Their issues were perfectly sane, they just didn't recognize what they were dealing with.

But this is just my 2 cents to try and make people more aware of the sharks in the water.

I've taken some courses in computer security and forensic at a local well known University. During that time I was told that to work with local police I would have to go this route and it was re-iterated when I talked with people in local law enforcement who did the forensics. They were a scary bunch of clowns. Some had plugged their computers openly to the network during a class and another was showing all the open wireless connections you could see going to and from his house. The funny thing was that close to the end of his log, was a fully open wireless connection with a SID possessing his last name.

So to do my part for justice, I would prefer to work for the defense.

Why are manufacturers doing this? Does anyone really prefer using glossy screens for day-to-day activities?"

Yes a large number of my executive and marketing clients prefer the glossy over the matte finish screens. Glossy is old , went away and then came back as new. So most executives / marketing people think that new is better than old, just because. They also prefer shiny.
At one time, and maybe still, there was a premium price for glossy screens. So of course if it cost more it must be better and they can only have the best.
Many times they run into problems with glare on airplanes and outdoors, but they never relate this to their choice of screens. I have learned that it is just better to tell them that they should buy an anti-glare screen that they can put over the existing screen. So now they have spent even more money on their screen and have to take their anti-glare screen with them and take it on and off their computer. But this adds to their illusion of being technically savvy, because they have found a solution to a computer problem.
I have had only one client who came to me and asked if there was a better way to solve this issue with the glossy screen and having to use the anti-glare screen. Now he feels technically superior to his colleagues, because I was able to provide him inside information straight from his IT department guru.
