Speed may depend on how the application was compiled. I've been developing some software on my iBook, and have found -O3 optimizations to produce code that is 6 to 7 times faster than the unoptimized counterparts.

  11. Awesome! on Slate Predicts The End Of TiVo · · Score: 2, Interesting

Slate, a Microsoft magazine, says Tivo (a personal video recorder) will fail. Then they say that the X-box (a Microsoft toy) will rule the pvr world. Then, at the bottom of their site, have a kickback link for a Tivo at BestBuy. Now that's what I call journalism.

  12. update explains a lot on Weekend Apple Software Updates · · Score: 3, Interesting

I was shocked when after giving my iPod a supposedly full charge, the battery indicator immediately dropped by one bar. For a while I thought that my battery was hosed, and the apple knowledge base didn't offer any news to the contraty. Looking at the update, I can see that this was a common problem. The update does appear to fix it.

  13. The story of the lobsters on Designing Computer Animation Software? · · Score: 5, Funny

The posts here remind me of a story I once heard. There was a bucket full of lobsters. The lobsters hated being in the bucket, and were all trying to get out. Every time it looked like one lobster was about to pull itself over the edge, the others would grab ahold of it in the hopes of being dragged out too. Instead of being finding their freedom, they would pull the lobster back down and they would all be back where they started.

Why are you being a bunch of lobsters, Slashdotters? Why can't you support this guy and move him along towards his dream? Trolling and cynicism: is that what we have all come to?

On the other hand, the guy does sound like a fucking idiot.

  14. Re:IRIX's visual appeal on A Look at IRIX 6.5.17 · · Score: 2

People want to do work on an IRIX. If they wanted a fancy pants desktop with no functionality they would go with a Windows or a Mac machine. IRIX is best at doing graphics processing, and there is no reason to waste that processing power on purty desktops. Hence the description "workstation" instead of "desktop."

At work I use a dual P3 933 running pwm. At home, an iBook with OS X. It's called using the right tool for the job, you nitwit.
