Speed may depend on how the application was compiled. I've been developing some software on my iBook, and have found -O3 optimizations to produce code that is 6 to 7 times faster than the unoptimized counterparts.

A vibrant field? Sounds stagnant to me. How many patterns could you possibly come up with?
Yes. I do cross platform development between an P3 Linux box, a P4 Windows box, and a G3 iBook. The only pain in my developers ass is on the Windows box. The iBook is great to develop on.
I would take the process and print it out. Hell, I'd make lots of copies. Then I would put that stack of encryption goodness next to my toilet and use it to wipe my ass after taking a shit.
Slate, a Microsoft magazine, says Tivo (a personal video recorder) will fail. Then they say that the X-box (a Microsoft toy) will rule the pvr world. Then, at the bottom of their site, have a kickback link for a Tivo at BestBuy. Now that's what I call journalism.
I was shocked when after giving my iPod a supposedly full charge, the battery indicator immediately dropped by one bar. For a while I thought that my battery was hosed, and the apple knowledge base didn't offer any news to the contraty. Looking at the update, I can see that this was a common problem. The update does appear to fix it.
The posts here remind me of a story I once heard. There was a bucket full of lobsters. The lobsters hated being in the bucket, and were all trying to get out. Every time it looked like one lobster was about to pull itself over the edge, the others would grab ahold of it in the hopes of being dragged out too. Instead of being finding their freedom, they would pull the lobster back down and they would all be back where they started.
Why are you being a bunch of lobsters, Slashdotters? Why can't you support this guy and move him along towards his dream? Trolling and cynicism: is that what we have all come to?
On the other hand, the guy does sound like a fucking idiot.
People want to do work on an IRIX. If they wanted a fancy pants desktop with no functionality they would go with a Windows or a Mac machine. IRIX is best at doing graphics processing, and there is no reason to waste that processing power on purty desktops. Hence the description "workstation" instead of "desktop."
At work I use a dual P3 933 running pwm. At home, an iBook with OS X. It's called using the right tool for the job, you nitwit.
Don't forget that Linus gave Linix a GPL licsnse because he was using GNU tools. The animosity is obvious. Stallman like the kid who gets an expensive toy for his birthday, then screams and cries because it isn't the right color.
Beta is still used quite a bit in the commercial broadcast industry. Sony was making consumer products on the side, just cause there was still a nickel (truly a nickel) to be made. They aren't making enough nickels any more so the niche consumer product line has been discontinued. Beta is still alive and well in the broadcast industry, though.
You misunderstand. I'm stating a fact, not condeming it. Lots of people get fucked because I want an iPod. I'm just glad that in some way I'm not the guy being fucked.

Yeah, but I had a hot literature teacher, and I wanted her to do bad things to me.
It doesn't matter what you wear. You'll always be losers.

Making things look purty is always good.
Unless it's the layout and color scheme of Slashdot.
cost. $1k vs. $4k. I love my iBook.
And when asked by the congressional committee about what happened to the documents, you say "CEO dumbfuck ordered me to shred them."
I'm the President and founder of Bogue Shave, and I'm going to sue you for defamation you jerk.

Poor guy. You probably aren't going to get laid either.
Kde is technically better, but out of the box it looks like ass. You can hardly blame Red Had for wanting a consistent and attractive interface.
Oh, and guess what: you don't have to use Red Hat. I don't. Funny how the world works. no?

And this is funny because...?
I wonder if the /. effect could drain the batteries of this Newton quickly?"
Hah. Funny. Fuck you Slashdot.
but I really prefer the non-Director's-edition.
So you're the guy the studio execs are pandering to.
The Wrath of Kahn DVD fucked up by not including the original ST Kahn episode, imo (which is the only one that counts).

There isn't much more to say about that. Timothy sucks. Boo!

I spelled Cthulhu wrong. Cthulhu have mercy me.
