ebay is a bunch of ass-hats. in an attempt to wring more money out of people ebay has become heavy and hard to understand.
google could pull the rug out from under them pretty quick. they could allow people to post auctions for free while in beta... this would get them a huge user group.
My experience has been very good with their betas, the product is completely usable and any problems are usaly very subtle bugs or usability issues. I get annoyed at companies that use betas to unit test their applications.
I for one would very much NOT like to return to the user experience of performance of 15 years ago. For christsake burning a CD 10 years ago was witchcraft.
Adobe After Effects is like this as well... way better compositing and less of a memory hog.
If I saw my kid zombiing out over some video game and withdrawing from everybody I would get him some help. Thats what a good parent would do.

I have been in this industry a long time and have NO interest in doing any of the things you mention.
Assuming that people want to spend MORE time after work sitting behind a computer is foolish.

My objection to ebay is less about their fees than their interface. I distinctly remember my disgust when they released their 'new' interface.
Now you have to wade through a ton of non-auction(ebay store) adds to get to the real stuff.

So what? When their design is done and proven, the US will contract them to build them here for a fraction of what it would cost to do ourselves.

not goverment... tightly regulated businesses like water company and electric
i think that companies would offer a 'bridge' service (this would work especially well if it was tied into the municipality)
businesses would continue to use landlines until the quality of voiceip matches that of the conventional serice.
