    How do you know that? I don't see methodology mentioned in the article, but it certainly seem like a good situation for FB to provide Nielsen with some sort of service.

    It says right in the article that Wise had a hard time detecting Neptune which is relatively close.

    A nice easy classification would be to call them '20C' planets, short for '20th Century Planets' . This makes schoolchildren happy and covers the planets that are most relevant to us(for now) without being false or inaccurate.

    Article was poorly written- I would think those are the authors bold claims. The scientists claim to have found nothing. "I would love to find it," says Brown. "But I'd also be perfectly happy if someone else found it. That is why we're publishing this paper.     Actually, yes this is based on observation of objects in kupiter belt. The article is a mess but worth reading.

    It is extremely difficult to come up with a real extinction scenario. People have run the calculations already for full out nuclear exchange at the height of the cold war, and estimates run about 30% of world population. With viruses, virulence is inversely proportional to survivability outside the host, so there are plenty of island and other enclaves that would go untouched. Also viruses tend to mutate to a less virulent form as killing the host is actually bad for the viruses survivability. I could go on, but killing everyone on earth would be pretty damn hard.

    There has already been a ton of study on correlation of IQ in twins. It's not 1:1 but it is better than the general population or siblings. I am sure they worked this into their statistics, if mj had negative effect the correlation would be less.

    I guess my objection was too vague... is it total extinction, 50% extinction or 100 million dead? They all sound like 'threats to humanity' to me, but the impacts on the human race are all vastly different. It's a term to pull heartstrings that doesn't mean very much. If we mean extinction events, none of the ones Hawking mentions sound even close.

    That is the world's population. That would 600 million today if you assume population growth was the same across geographical areas.

    I have a German set of tools that are strictly used for turning bolts and screws and another box full of 'junk' tools when you need to pound something out or do something that might wreck the tool. Also have a 3/4 socket set from Harbor Freight since those sizes are used so rarely- if I was a tractor mechanic might spring for a good set.

    I have found exactly the opposite- their 4 1/2 inch angle grinder is an amazing deal, but you wouldn't know it if you used their cutting wheels which are useless crap, with a first quality wheel they are amazing. Their sandpaper is garbage too... these are two expendables that I have found are worth spending extra money for. Ever try 3M sandpaper?

    Think of it this way- if AMD is competing against those intel cpus that do PcMark 8 8% less then that it just not true. There are always I5 systems that have parity with the AMD, and once you factor in power consumption the cost is same or worse for AMD

    You must of missed the large number of fatal or critical accidents that have happened in CA lately with drones. That is reason enough.

    In 20 years as a developer every place I have worked has had 50/50 balance male female. I would say that females might be somewhat more represented as managers and business analysts but have had at least 30% female developers. Hardly a sausage fest.

    Same story here- 20 years in the business and one time a co-worker said a vaguely sexual comment to another. She reported him and he was sent home for a week.

    The core problem is that our financial system is predicated on this kind of growth- that is what needs to be reworked.

    I guess it depends on what state you are in... I was born in NJ and the highways are terrible there. I have been around a bit and the highways in places like Tennessee, Texas and New Mexico are in great shape. I think cold weather and the cost of doing business in certain areas have an impact on the quality of the highways. Also the contention that we should pour money into high traffic areas isn't necessarily a good one, it has been demonstrated that there is enough elasticity in traffic that any new capacity will be quickly filled.

    If there is a case for life extension this is it. Seems like such a waste for a person to live ~70 years, about 20 of which they are at their peak.
