I think this an issue where progress can be made because it is a cultural practice and clerics have made it clear (when pushed) that it is not part of Islamic teachings.

This is America, the cost of debt collection is low and there is plenty of competition in this area.
The real argument for letting the house is burn is unstated: a lot of Americans get off on disapproval of irresponsible people. It makes them feel good. Compassion would just get in the way of that. Interestingly many of these people also call themselves Christians.
