    But, as an observer, you either had to be a part of that "singularity" to "hear" it (certainly couldn't exist as a human in those circumstances) or you had to be separate from the singularity. (Not even sure you could exist outside... Wouldn't you need SPACE and/or TIME for that?) Within the event horizon? Not going to exist for long! Outside of the event horizon? All vacuum, no sound. DURING the event? You just became some of the matter flung all directions.

    The point of this mental drivel? The idea of the Big Bang having any sort of sound is absurd. Kinda like downloading ice cream...

    I'm amazed that MS didn't take this into consideration. I mean, if they had just said "Dude, that's not cool...", he would have taken the pic down and no one would have noticed. Now, this nobody now has a big bag of rocks to throw. I'm sure someone will hire him just to thumb their nose at BillyBoyandCo.

    So how many people are killed by crypto? Bad crypto can get people killed, but that's not the same, now is it? Besides, if it's bad crypto, maybe we shouldn't be using it? So we're going to infringe on Constitutional rights because the military can't afford good crypto?

    Or are you arguing that the enemy shouldn't have good crypto? Newsflash: They already do! You think the only good math geeks are U.S. math geeks?

    Publishing does not equal exporting, BTW. And books are specifically excluded from the regulation. What's the difference between a book and a web site? Perhaps before you support stupid laws, you could learn what they are. I wish Congress would...

    He doesn't care about exporting... He cares about being able to freely discuss crypto concepts with his peers and students. Some of those peers and students may just happen to be overseas. Even if not, he was threatened with enforcement actions for having his thoughts/ideas available on an unrestricted web site available to the Internet at large. This is a free speech issue. (Words are NOT munitions. Programs are written words. Programs are not munitions.)

    No, no Series 2 hacks are in the book (from what I can tell... I haven't read it.) Series 2 hacks are out there. They just haven't become routine just yet.

    As for BASH on a Series 2, the trick is to get a trusted kernel to boot, then have it run a hacked kernel. Yes, Tivo added some integrity checks on the Series 2. (Insert DMCA disclaimer.)

    The author probably doesn't want to get into Series 2 machines because they are still in a state of flux, and he would be trafficing in a circumvention device if he did!

    Some of the blogs out there specifically avoid hacks with DMCA implications, but others do not. If you can't find what you're looking for for your Series 2, keep looking. (Hint: Try this one first.)

    I think the question is how much EXTRA, be it in juice or hardware wear, does this cost? Unfortunately, it's one of those extremely difficult to measure items, much like many business cases and "what-if" situations...

    Since most of a processors energy is disipated as heat, I would imagine little difference in load for a "resting" processor as opposed to a "working" one. But what is the value of the work performed as compared to the extra energy required to perform it? Physical work is easy to measure. How do you measure computational work in comparison to the electricity required to do it?

    Is an VoIP company a phone company?

    I think the bigger issue is regulation at the application layer... So what if this goes through... Are Usenet taxes far behind? Or how about the RIAA getting a cut of all P2P traffic based on stats collected by the ISP? Where does this end? And if it MUST happen, wouldn't it be the job of the Feds and not the states?

    Not owned by IBM... They licensed it from Microsoft, but only the earlier versions. They do own their modifications, though. Unlike what SCO is saying about their Unix license...

    Yes. Use Total Recorder (a software "soundcard" that will export sound to a .wav file.) and play the encrypted .wma's. MP3 the resulting .wav. Note that the result may suck, since you've effectively MP3'ed the original .wma, and both compression systems are lossy, but not necessarily ditching the same bits. Better to .wma the .wav, only without encryption/DRM.

    On a related note, did anyone else notice that the DRM support package on MS Update disappeared in the last day or two? Maybe its just a version 1.0 issue!

    You know, all this time I've been wondering why someone hasn't come out with an anonymizing Kazaa proxy.

    Just charge a few bucks and proxy Kazaa connections for people. Don't log anything and there's nothing for the RIAA to subpoena. Can't say the proxy is illegal in itself, because courts have already ruled that Kazaa is legal. If Kazaa is legal, then anonymous Kazaa should be just as legal.

    Or how about a "no-log" ISP? Can't subpoena what doesn't exist!

    But you don't have to know exactly where the jmp, etc. is... Pad your exploit code with my favorite instruction, NOP (No OPeration). If you have some idea where the pointer is going to land, just start writing a few hundred/thousand/million NOP's, then your code. As long as the pointer lands in NOP-land, it will eventually get to your code.

    Besides, NOP is one of the FASTEST executing instructions there is! I use them in all my programs to enhance performance...

    Why do they need a vendor to begin with? Ford should stop "blame shifting" and roll their own, for crying out loud. You know, they might have a few ENGINEERS hanging around! They can make a bloody car from the ground up, but they can't compile their own distro? You want control? Roll your own and do everything YOUR way!

    Old story, late reply, so no one will ever see this...

    The catch is to make sure your DRM-busting program has "significant non-infringing use"... I was thinking of something like Total Recorder. (Sets up a s/w sound card and pipes output to a file.) No one can claim Total Recorder does not have legit uses. And it really doesn't even touch the DRM stuff at all (no reverse engineering). Remember what Bruce sez... If you can listen to it you can record (and copy) it!
