Of course these stores are losing money. Most of the time I buy my music online, or if I really need it now, at Walmart. It's just cheaper, and that's all that matters to the average joe/jane.
The same gravity lens effect would occure for the earth, or even the moon. This would be a more pratical approch, considering our level of technology. In addition, it would orbit much faster, and would be easier to move, than a solar foci telescope.
If they can use cameras and software to identify the faces of known shoplifters, why can't they use cameras and software to actualy catch shoplifters in the act.
Or would they even need to go that far. They could just say that their system could do it. Most punk kids wouldn't shoplift from a store if there was a big sign that said:
Our sophisicated dohickies are watching you!
We will catch you!

on the contrary. i think that someday we might just see this type of technology in graphics cards.
i can understand why open source software is usefull to me. i can just download it and run it. it's free and doesn't require any special physical equipment.
but i don't see how i can use an open source chip. i wouldn't be able to make it, so if i wanted one i would have to pay someone to make it for me.
i can understand the benifits to research and other areas. however, curently, i don't have a use for this.

Imagine a submarine positioning itself at a certin angle and direction and firing a supersonic bullet our of the bow. it explodes out of the water, travles 25+ miles through the air, and slames into sadam hussien's bedroom. Cool:-)
Tsunimies are created by underwater earthquakes( or other like shockwaves). i don't think a freight liner sized vehicle is fesible, if only because it would destroy costal town with the tidal wave!(however, this might also be a good weapon)
i was thinking of this to, only in the ground a la subways. But the more i think about it, i don't know if you could build a tube that would stand up to the shockwaves and exhaust fumes of the vehicle. this would be doublely important for undersee tunnles becaues they might explode behind you from the shockwave!
you could use some kind of water ski to push aginst the inside of the bubble, maybe. this way the nose dosn't need all sorts of stearing stuff in it and can just be there to create the cavity. it would cause drag, but not as much as fins would. also, if the rocket continues to burn i don't know if the cavity can colapse, because the rocket puts so much force aginst the nose. the bubble might be disturbed by something like seaweed, might even set up wicked oscillations on the bubble surface, but as long as the rocket stays lit i think the cavity would be present. plus it might be posible to reinforce the cavity with the same trick they used with the rocket exhuast. it also seems like you could use a partial cavity just to reduce drag on a normal sub. for example, by releasing gas under the sub into a noch or groove they could ride on an "air slead".
that's what i was thinking. extend the tube and get better results. also, isn't the fact that the out-going beam is detected a form of information? or you could set up two beams. a pulse from the first beam would equal a 0 and a pulse from the second would equal a 1. i was thinking that if light travels faster than c, shouldn't the speed of light be the fastest speed of light, and not the most common?
I might as well listen to the radio in that case. Digital music is a great idea, but much more work for the user than, say, the radio, except that mp3's are more convienient because i can linsten to what i want when i want. if i listen to some songs more than others then i don't mind paying for the song. if you truly respect a groups music than you arn't going to want to screw them over. attaching a cost to every song you hear sounds like divx. i would like it better if winamp had a counter so that i could keep track of what songs i listen to most.
And of course, no one EVER cheats at solitaire!
Or heaven forbid, poker!
I want to go to mars so i can smoke marijuana and marry my sister!

Strangely reminiscent of Mad Max, don't you think.

What is the focal length for the earth anyway?

Well, when the military wants a weapon, i don't think they give too much thought to the environment.
Just look at nukes!
your just Pessimists. if we'd of listined to you we'd have never faked landing on the moon!

i bet Pakistan will anounce a compeating mission soon.
