Hmm, does anybody have a better understanding of this benchmark, I don't understand what the # of clients means. I ask this because if you look, the top one has 36 clients with 36 CPUs/client! The second one is 24 clietns with 24 CPUs/client! What the heck? All of the other systems have 1 or 2 processor clients. I don't get it, why use a huge ass server for a client? Do you get a higher result with bigger clients? I do notice that #2 has about 40000 more users than the #3 system, and #1 has about 100000 more users.
CSS does protect access to the copyrighted work. You cannot watch a DVD without removing CSS, hence CSS is stopping you from accessing the work.
This is what is wrong. The DMCA makes this all nice and legal, this ruling needs to be appelaed to the Supreme Court so that it will HOPEFULLY be struck down as unconstitutional.
We needed to lose this case, we need to take this to the Supreme Court to kill the DMCA, that is the real evil.
Not a direct MS quote though, just the CNet reporter paraphrasing Brian Valentine, senior vice president of the Windows Division. Saying that "the first version of the operating system will not need service packs or bug fixes like other software releases". Probably a case of sloppy journalism.
As an aside I worked on a crappy single drive SCSI RS/6000 system at work (their current lowend model), heavy disk I/O caused the system to just move like molasses.
Actually most of the "actresses" I have met actually prefer to be called actors. There was this one girl who told me that only airhead bimbos call themselves actresses.:)
There is no software mode to Quake3, it requires a hardware accelerator. You can run it in software using Mesa, of course it runs at about 3 spf (thats second per frame).:)
Your missing the point also. Censorship is bad, no matter what form it takes. I don't want censorware telling me what I can view, nor do I want the librarian telling me what I can view, nor do I want the community telling me what I can view. I paid for these public facilities with my tax dollars. I am protected under the Constitution to have freedom of speech. Why do people allow this freedom to be taken away?
Yes Surfwatch blocks many Gay and lesbian site. You know what? In many communities the majority of people want these sites to be blocked. does that mean they should be blocked? Hell no! Free speech is meant to protect the minority not the majority. The majority have no problem getting their views enforced. It is the minority that are screwed without protection.
So if I want to look at porn, or bomb making, or scientology, or pick your controversial subject, I have a right to. My taxes paid for those computers. If you privatize the public libraries then they can do whatever they want, it is there money.
The argument should not be wether they use Surfwatch or not it is wether we should allow censorship at all. Yeah this may be unrealistic in the current political climate, but so what, this is the ideal we should be fighting for. Stop rolling over and giving away your rights "for the children". What the hell is the point of even raising a kid if all of their future freedoms are being removed before they have a chance to enjoy them?
Why are any of the computers censored at all? People who advocate free speech always tend to forget that it also includes some stuff which you might find offensive.
Say someone is looking up bomb making materials on the computer at the library. Should that person be kicked off?
Suppose someone else is viewing porn, should that person be kicked off?
Suppose someone else is looking at some controversial art that some guy sitting across the way finds offensive. Should that person be kicked off?
Suppose someone is looking at scientology documents that the christian sitting next to him finds offensive. Should this person be kicked off?
Do we have free speech in the US or not? The libraries are funded by the people for use by the people. Why are some of these people denied access to information they want to view? Who gives a damn if some of it offends you, that is the price of free speech. If they want to privatize the libraries fine, then they can ban whatever the hell the want.
OK, so the computers are in a public area, and apparently the user can be kicked off for viewing "inappropriate" material...how is that different than using Surfwatch?
Yeah, but honestly the big cost for the average joe is the hardware. All prosumer level capture cards come with NLE software (many with Premiere itself). You do not need an Avid rig to do work that is good enough for internet distribution right now (if broadband ever becomes super widespread this may change). I have a $500 DPS EditBay analog capture card that I can get 3:1 compression out of. It looks damn good, I know several people who have done some simple TV work with this card. You can get cards for a few $k that will give you broadcast quality results. Avid has a lock in the movie industry. We will see how they stand up, but it doesn't look good for them. As a way of comparison, Avid is the SGI of the video editing world, they were top notch for a long time, now consumer level stuff is starting to get to their level.
just as a cover my ass addendum to my previous post (damn anonymous coward trolls). The above figures are for CCIR-601 compliance. CCIR-601 is the Encoding Parameters of Digital Television For Studios (ie encoding video into data usable by a computer). CCIR is the International Radio Consultative Committee a predecessor organization of the current ITU-T which is the International Telecommunication Union--Telecommunication Standardization Bureau. OK enough backing?:)
Heres a link in case you are bored and want to read all about CCIR-601.
Uhh, let see, how do you capture video? A frame at a time. How many frames per second do you need to capture an uncompressed NTSC signal? 29.97 Get it? Each frame takes some disk space and bandwidth to capture. It is important.
Oh, hey I should say that the figure I gave before are the DV standards which is what is used for NLE. So the broadcast suignals might be different, but we are talking about NLE here so that is why I gave those figures.
NTSC is 720x486 @ 29.97 fps PAL is 720x576 @ 25 fps
640x480 is the "standard" internet distribution resolution. So no, this is not TV production level, but it is fine if your only doing internet distribution.
I saw this while in the UK, Germany and France last year. It is kind of cool, but after playing with it for a little while, I found it to be kind of archaic.
All of the ones I tried out were god awful slow, having to flip through a bunch of pages to get to the one I punched in. Is this the TVs fault? crappy hotel TVs.
It is kind of nice to be able to get weather or sport scores or channel listings, etc. But then in the US we just switch to Weather channel or ESPN or the channel guide station and get the same info in a more entertaining format. (If you have cable or DSS of course). Or just get it from the net.
Public radio is pretty much all that is worth listening to. for another cool station check out KCRW Los Angeles. Mix of talk and music, but they have a music only stream too, very eclectic mix. Unfortunately it is only a 16k RA stream, they need to upgrade.
Everybody needs to support your local public radio stations. Or hell just pledge to one of the ones on the net that you like.:)
OK, I found an even better page that contains Hero's treatise on pneumatics. Has a whole slew of nifty Greek gadgets. Whether any of these gadgets were actually used I have no idea.

Top 5? Rarely finishes in the top 20, hell I think we damn near finished last in '98.
:P
Women's World Cup on the other hand, we kick ass. Woohoo, GirlPower!
I love soccer myself, find football mind numbingly boring.
There was a CNET article here.
Not a direct MS quote though, just the CNet reporter paraphrasing Brian Valentine, senior vice president of the Windows Division. Saying that "the first version of the operating system will not need service packs or bug fixes like other software releases". Probably a case of sloppy journalism.
I don't know anything about ALSA, but the SBLive! driver supports multiple audio streams in OSS.
The driver is not in the kernel tree yet. Alan Cox has been working with the Live developers to get it ready to be inserted. Not sure when.
Modern IDE has a low CPU usage, enable DMA.
Modern IDE does not take >5% CPU. Enable DMA.
As an aside I worked on a crappy single drive SCSI RS/6000 system at work (their current lowend model), heavy disk I/O caused the system to just move like molasses.
Your other points are valid though.
IDE does not suck your CPU dry anymore. Enable DMA.

All of the linux groups I read are spam free. Really the only major spams I see are in the binaries group.

Reminds me of Logan's Run. I forget the exact details, but once you reach a certain age, you are killed.

A brief history of the steam engine.
