I now check and answer emails in batches whenever I have a convenient breaking point.
Email has substantially reduced breaks in my concentration. Exactly the opposite of what the author finds.

    2. Driver's Licenses can be just for drivers: So, so many Americans who can't drive (for reasons including age, disability, etc.) fight to maintain their driver's licenses because it's HARD to participate in society and commerce without one. A national ID card would provide all persons with an ID that merchants wouldn't question -- and no need for a driving test. Furthermore, people who know that they're unsafe, incapable drivers would have an alternative to keeping their licenses. This would allow them to avoid the temptation to drive.

No need for this. State departments of motor vehicles already issue non-operator IDs for those who don't drive but just want an ID card.

  15. The Network effect on FTC Extends Deadline on National DNC List Comments · · Score: 1

I pay extra for a private number. That is stupid. Private should be the default.I should have to pay extra to be listed in a book.

You are perhaps familiar with the network effect? The value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of connected nodes. By keeping your number out of the published directory, you are disconnecting yourself from most of the network and thus reducing its overall value. That's the high-toned philosophical explanation for why the telephone company charges you for an unlisted number.

The more prosaic reason is because a lot more people will call directory assistance in an attempt to get your number.

I don't necessarily agree with these reasons, but they're consistent.

The US Postal Service already implements this, although only in the barcodes and not in human-readable address labels.
