actually, I would have to say that some improvements in supporting games (as in OpenGL, DRI, what-have-you) would probably do a world of good for linux in the mindshare department...
in a perfect world i'd imagine an OSS 3D sound API as well, since OpenAL lacks that..
Maybe if TV didn't suck so bad on average people would pay attention to it more often. I mean, who are the geniuses who canceled Family Guy and Futurama instead of giving them better time slots? And the Simpsons is beating the proverbial dead horse every new episode-- you can tell it's uninspired committee written scripts; utter crap.
The Radeon would use standard HLSL code, whereas I'm sure the FX code is all nvidia specific custom stuff. So, while it would be more effort than just replace a few lines I believe most of the Radeon cards have all the rendering extensions the FX line has anyway.
AFAIK - when the nVidia cards use the standard rendering path in Doom3 they are much slower than the ATI cards. They have to use a custom path with stupid tricks that make the game look slightly worse in order to get back up to the same level of speed.
That's what I seem to remember from Carmack's comments here in his.plan file.
the whole point to benchmarking with a game is to get "real world" performance analysis-- madonion is a glorified demo scene app... if you want to figure out which video card / system components you want then you benchmark the stuff with your favorite game so you know exactly what's better!
Whatever you ultimately decide on, it would be best for a good security education to include a variety of platforms and hardware so that students can experience different things. For example, if you have something along these lines:
n = # of students
(n/2) PC's running Windows XP / Linux / Solaris-x86 triple boot set-ups -- for them to hack from and get hacked by... If you play a competitive game of "you get x minutes to secure your box on y OS, then everyone try to hack each other's boxes-- figure out what OS they are running, and what (if any) known vulnerabilities it has."
Throw in another box that's to run as a "server," run by the teacher-- it's a similar dual or triple boot box to provide variety.
A few routers & switches of different brands (3Com, Cisco)
Why would you ever want a console that only plays a single game? I thought the whole point was being able to switch between games. In this case, the writer of the news blurb fails to realize that you could switch between several such self-booting, self-contained discs (such as the UT2k3 Linux LiveCDs that Gentoo made) and then your PC would be kinda like a console system in that you don't need to muss with drivers or OS configuration outside of the game to set things up properly.
If your first FPS game was UT, then no wonder you were getting trounced by elite players. Many of those fools have been owning n00bs since Doom added multiplayer. So count the years from then, let's see how many games as well: Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2,... and finally we get to UT and Q3's time period. They've simply been playing a lot longer than 3 years-- compared to them you are still a newbie.
I can't wait until 7-zip gets multivolume spanning, then the only choices for Windows for such a solution wouldn't be Zip and RAR (both commercial and patented software).
The Quake 2 engine was not intended to be for third person perspective games. Hence, they made it do quite well (ie all new camera code) what it wasn't originally made for.
No, I mean that Raven Software will be a better GAME developer than id Software could ever be (in other words, they will use the Doom3 engine to its full potential and then extend it to do things that it wasn't originally intended to do-- much like what they did with the Heretic series, Soldier of Fortune series, and Jedi Knight 2) -- Carmack is pretty good at engine writing (and he has a tendency to push hardware developers in good directions) so I have no real beef with him per-say, but their games are ultimately as shallow and base as the company name suggests.
Once apon a time they made some games for Nintendo and Gameboy... sadly, the real FF series has yet to return... (I'd imagine if FFX had been on the 'cube it would have been a lot more successful at launch)
Freedom Force didn't exactly have the same amount of press coverage and hype pre-launch and post-launch that Quake III did. Irrational also didn't have the benefit of being a legendary (or infamous) developer (however deserving you think that is).
Lesson? Technology doesn't spell success. My bet is that Doom III will be shown up by Quake IV (please prove me wrong).
"in soviet russia, games play you!"
remember, linux people are "above" games.. jk

That lizard-man looks familiar... Like straight from Final Fantasy Tactics!
No, but they might have this one:
Pimps at Sea
thanks
i particularly enjoyed the ones of the new boot-up screen that defaults to hiding kernel and init script messages

If it wasn't for hardware register support, you wouldn't even have virtual memory. So much for your theory.

Just get a SFF PC box with video out, slap Windows XP Media Center & a few console ports in like Vice City & KOTOR...
Study your French more. The "r" sound in croissant is not silent.
My point was:
Neither of which is a true Final Fantasy!

No need to be a smart ass.
You just want to see how big his Schwartz is.

For a second there I thought they were talking about Black dwarves and (East) Indian goblins...

No, it's on TBS not TNN, and it's still on Adult Swim.
