The counter-intuitive UI of Gimp is enough reason to ditch it. Add the fact that the plugins from Alien Skin are sw33t and not duplicated in any satisfactory way in Gimp and you have two good reasons why you would want to use Photoshop over it.
I'd have to say that for certain games, especially those on console platforms, it is hard to find illustrative screen shots of areas (such as those for role playing games or adventure games) with markings denoting where things really are. On the other hand, games like Baldur's Gate 2 have a wealth of information online including some guides with fully annotated maps, cheats (item codes, spawn codes, etc for the Lua-based console system) that are mostly derived from screen shots.
Console game guides are worthwhile if the game has more than 30 hours of depth of gameplay (as in, not repetitive and increasing in complexity). PC games it's a lot harder to judge, but if you are searching for a lesser known title chances are that you won't be able to find a guide in stores anyway and you will be forced to rely on newsgroups and/or the web.
but I don't think it will be Playstation 2 level graphics... initially it was announced that it would be PSX level graphics... plus, despite the fact that Nintendo claims SNES level graphics on the GBA, the resolution is smaller and squatter than television so even if the programming for the game is on par with a port, the GBA gfx will be altered (smaller viewing screen or reduced graphical detail, take your pick)...
My PSX is the original model from North America, and it still works great. I even have it modded for playing import games. It probably is just your bad luck, man, that you end up with so many failures. I'm pretty sure that Sony reliability is about on par with most other companies (that is to say, about 10-20% failure over a year or two past the warranty date:P)
Actually, Ultima Underworld had elements of shooting in spells and such. It predated Quake, which most people assume was the first six degrees of freedom first person 3D game.
The point I was trying to make is that most people incorrectly assume that ID Software was doing something revolutionary and not evolutionary. There were other people out there developing and contributing to academic periodicals information on how to do these techniques, and ID just happened to bring the bar a bit higher in each case and towards the shooting and arcade-style play type that they always adhere to.
Although Carmack was the one of the first persons (if not the first) to port a scrolling platformer to MS-DOS (the infamous Mario Bros. port for Nintendo).
This is the same problem that systems programmers have been grappling with for ages-- how much optimization does the system provide in libraries or drivers, and how much does the application developer have to bring to the table. However, in this case, the graphics drivers have to be optimized a heck of a lot in order for people to eek out those last 5-10 frames per second to beat the competitor's product on benchmarks. So then you have hacks happening not only on the side of the drivers/system and hardware itself, but also the game developers who have always used incredible hacks to get around hardware limitations. The intersection of these two worlds gets really ugly when one side doesn't understand what is going on in the other side.:(

You wouldn't want non-OO Perl being directly converted into Java equivalence anyway-- the whole point of OO design is to abstract things and make it easier to maintain and modify the source code after it has been created (software engineering practices). A sloppy program-ported version of your Perl code into JSP or whatever would probably be a NIGHTMARE to support.
This supposed program Freenet doesn't let you do anything really. It takes for-fricken-ever just to download all the images from the front page (I am using an un-firewalled Mozilla Firebird latest nightly to test it) and then clicking any of the pages like Yoohoo (or whatever the hell it's called) doesn't result in it going anywhere.
You're spouting your pride for being a movie pirate on a public message board? Morals aside, legally that is just a stupid thing to do. Might as well walk around town with a big sign that says, "PLEASE SUE ME," in this current political climate.
Just stop being a pig all the time and then maybe women might not be offended by your products. For example, whenever you think that gratuitous sexuality would be a "plus" check yourself by thinking about what women might think of your advertising or product content. Example: whoever thought it would be a great idea to have realistic bouncy physics and ridiculous cleavage for the lady at the inn in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance should have their head examined.
Uh yeah. I'm sure that many people in Afghanistan are worried about the Linux box on a broadband connection when they have to think about getting potable water and food every day, and then trying to find their relatives and children who have been scattered across the country.
I think by the 3rd title in the series everybody who didn't get turned off already was bored stiff by the monotonous and irritating puzzles and lack of anything new. I'm just curious to see if Tomb Raider 2 movie bombs because I'm thinking that the core audience of "fans" of the video games have all stopped caring about the series altogether. Personally, when news sites started carrying articles on Angel of Darkness I just thought, "too little, way way too late," (especially since the graphics look very dated when comparing with powerhouses like Half-Life 2).

That was a retailer discount, not a manufacturer one-- in other words, only your particular Wal-Mart had the deal.
I don't own a PS2 so I don't really care much...

Of course, that's just my opinion...
CG sucks. I wish RPGs didn't have ANY CG. All "cut-scenes" should be rendered with the in-game engine these days. There isn't any excuse.

I thought it said the *breast* of Brussels... how disappointing...

... then it really really really must be *wrong*, and in a bizarre kind of way!
Yeah... It has a certain... je ne sais quoi ...
That last statement is a fallacy.
No, probably because it has more brand-name recognition...
Uh? Hello? Ultima Underworld?
Um? Hello? Moraff's Maze??
There goes my idea of the Erotic French Kiss of Death: The Game

Vaporware in physical form, I say.
i haven't seen something that racist in a long time... thanks Square
Same company totally f'd up the Nightfire release for PC...

IMHO, the equation editor for OpenOffice kicks MS booty. Supports series notation, etc formatting properly.
