How about Google Apps for Domains? http://www.google.com/a/

Interesting but somewhat confusing result, he would use GMail on G-Mail. I can not see any legal ramifications coming out of it, but on the other hand he would not gain anything since he already have an email solution that offers, in some ways, more than GMail.

But it would be somewhat of an ironic nose burn for Google.

  2. Jokosher on Music Sequencing Software for Unix? · · Score: 2, Informative

Jokosher is described as "Audio production made simple".

Based on gstreamer and an attempt to make something that is much easier than Ardour to get in to (not as complex, and never will be). A music editing and mixing software targeted for garage bands and hobby podcasters and the like. 0.2 are more or less 1.0, which will be released any week now (when the gstreamer multi input soundcard bugs are taken care of). Will support Jack and such...

  3. My worst... on Worst Security Clean-Up You've Performed? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well, once, a little more than a year ago, I paid a visit to some friends and the afternoon progressed as usual, I eventually found myself in front of their computer. Because they had some trouble with their broadband access, it seemed.

As I soon found out the broadband company had cut them off, since the computer was a breeding ground for virus and spam of all sorts. Why did they have so much problem, you ask? This is what I found.

No hardware firewall, one computer directly accessing the internet on a (albeit slow) broadband connection, no software firewall, no anti-virus program, no ad ware-removal program, outlook express and (actually!) a really old version of Firefox (0.3 I believe), all of it running on an unpatched version of Windows 98A.

It took me some time to clean that one out.

But it did impress me somewhat that the broadband company (Telia, Sweden) actually demanded proof that they had installed both anti virus and a firewall before they reactivated the connection. That is surprisingly good ethics for such a company, although it might be considered pure survival tactics, as the internet climate are today.

You speek about RPG's, well I would say Secret of Mana would be the best one.

Rembember Secret of Mana I and II (Seiken Densetsu II and II in japan) for the 16-bit SuperNintendo?

It gives you the choice between classic RPG or a more straight forward action game style (you do not have to chase numbers if you do not want to), it is a pure Square-game of old, but most importantly, you can play up to three at a time.

To be able to play Secret of Mana with two friends on our own DS's would truly be a dream scenario.

  6. Re:Super Monkey Ball on Two-Player Games for Mixed Skill Level Players? · · Score: 1

I once found myself at a dinner with mixed ages and computer experiences. The host eagerly wanted to play some console game, and asked me to set it up. I choose Super Monkey Ball, and it was a hit.
An older couple (about 55 years of age?) who had never before seen a console game joined in and actually could enjoy it almost as much as the rest of us.

The great thing about Super Monkey Ball is that it excludes noone, but there is always harder things for the experienced, although you play together, at the same time.

  7. "Dactyl Nightmare" on What Ever Happened to Virtual Reality? · · Score: 1

    I played it.

Many years ago a local videogame shop rented a "Dactyl Nightmare"-machine and let everybody who wanted to try it. A long que, and most sucked at playing. As "cr0sh" said, they didn't understand what to do.

I watched and understood. The room they had put the machine in had a to low cealing, and I was to tall, so I had to stand on my knees wich did not help the experience or the movability at all, I can tell you.

Still, I set the highscore that day, I had nothing but computer oponents, but I did not get hit untill the last oponent (the "Boss") hit me from behind. I could not turn around fast enough, standing on my knees.

The guy who worked the machinery was very impressed, and thought I had played it many times before. But that was the only time ever (and as you can tell, I am still proud about it).

I enjoyed it, despite all the quirks.

Somehow I suspect that there are some people who can take to VR, and most can't (without training). It is a special way of thinking. Perhaps many VR-applikations have fallen since people simply do not understand the consept?

  8. "The real question is..." regional? on Windows 2000 & Windows NT 4 Source Code Leaks · · Score: 1

It _was_ not ilegal to download musik in sweden. Since Januari first this is not true, however.

In sweden it is not legal to download copyrighted material you haven't payed for, as well as upload, of course.

So there might be countries where it is fully legal to download the Windows Source Code, I guess.

  9. Filemanager... on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I use Linux. Right now I use a minimal Slackware-installation.

When I start working with a new computer I tend to install Linux after a cupple of weeks. Then I fix, trim and tweak that installation one pice at time, untill one day when I suddenly realice that I don't use the Windows boot-option any more (often this occurs when it chrashes and won't work without a re-installation).

What I use a computer for is basicly to browse the web, send/recive email's, use IRC and ICQ, and SSH. It's an internet-interface. This Linux does well.

Regarding the UI, I've tried to create a Linux-installation for my parents. In this I've used qvwm (www.qvwm.org), and that works great. They can't at all see that the are not using Windows (with a little tweaking of the icons). There are browsers and OpenOffice and such to make them feel enough at home in the aplications as well.

But there is still one problem I've come across, and that is the lack of a nice UI for the filesystem. A really simple _and_ nice looking file manager. This simply do not exist for the *nix-platform.

Either they are MidnightCommande-based (it's a hopeless task to get my parents to use that), or it is a part of KDE/Gnome and therefore require 145 libraries, development stuff and such. I've tried to install some file manager I've liked the looks of, but this is a rather old box, and I use a 56k-modem, so none of the nicer looking alternatives are really an alternative.

And generally the nicer looking file managers are not only to large and library-dependent, they also have just to many "extras" included. What I want is something as simple as the inkluded file manager in Windows, or Windows Explorer. Something like that. A nice UI, runs on it's own, and not a resource-hog.

(I've used rox-filer, which almost reaches the goal, but has some other problems.)

  11. PDA? Well, in some sence, yes. on Ideal PDA Feature Wishlist? · · Score: 1

I want a device that probably can be described as a "SSH-terminal".

    • A good keyboard
    • Able to run SSH at decent speed
    • An in-buildt 56k-modem and network-card (just plug it in)
    • Some cord-less solution
    • B/W screen is sufficent
    • Long battery life
    • Some storage space

"Why?" you ask? Well, I can do everything I want to do on the servers on wich I have accounts, I just need to be able to connect to them wherever I am.

This way I also do not have to worry about connecting my PDA for transfer of files, dock:ing it to my PC or similar.

Am I the only one with this kind of need?

  13. Adobe says I on How Is Wine Doing These Days? · · Score: 2

I work for people in the desktop publishing industrie and they can't migrate to Linux due to them using almost exclusivly two programs; Adobe PageMaker and Photoshop.

Some time ago I tried to make Photoshop work under WINE. I didn't succed, but came close enough to be impressed. So my question is this. Do these programs now work under Linux? If so, we could dualboot all the computers at work, and only keep a minimal Windows installation.

Since so much in this bussiness are depending on these two programs, it would mean a great deal for the Linux community if they could be run under Linux. (IMONSHO, of course ;-)
