But the use to which they are put can be. Remember, this is a country that issued a patent to a bank for putting out toys for kids to play with, seeing a bank doing it as distinct from a restaurant doing it.
"On the Internet!" is patentable.
Maybe this MS/Novell thing will be the darkness before the dawn, when the utter farce of software patents and "intellectual property" are laid too bare for even the emperor's new clothes to cover.
The problem being that America as a nation has dressed itself in these new clothes. America as a nation would rather defend a farce rather than admit it was acting silly. Especially if there is a monetary cost involved in acquiring new new clothes.
It's not that paying companies for good work is even an issue. It's the fact that companies insist on perverting the legal system to effect the information age equivalent of highway robbery that is particularly disgusting.

More or less; and no. Let's just say they left room for improvement the first time around.
To use the ever popular car analogy, networking as an infrastructure is about where the automotive infrastructure was about WWI. It exists on a largish and commercial scale (the French were able move the army to the front lines overnight by rounding up all the taxi cabs in Paris), but it's still largely piggy-backed on older infrastructures (the first roads make expressly for automotive use were not made until just before WWII).
Traffic control is still being worked on as the roads/tubes get cloged up or get washed out/go offline.
And just wait until you see what they come up with as the net version of the roundabout/cloverleaf. It won't be any prettier, but at least only the admins will have to look at it.
As I posted just yesterday, ATX power supplies are available off the shelf in 12/24/48VDC, they are, however, pricey per unit. I imagine Google buys direct in bulk.

They are so deep in the trees that they can't see how much Myspace can help smaller bands, and artist discovery.
The hell they can't. That's exactly what they're trying to prevent.

Algorithms cannot be patented, right?
But the use to which they are put can be. Remember, this is a country that issued a patent to a bank for putting out toys for kids to play with, seeing a bank doing it as distinct from a restaurant doing it.

Novell can cram all the MS crap they want into the common Linux repositories,
but it doesn't mean that we - the Linux community - have to accept it.
How would you propose to know it when you saw it?

do they think that eu will just let them force people to use their own 'partner''s distro just like that ?
For the moment at least, the EU does not even recognize the IP in question.

The money motivator is there, but it's not like he needs more.
I'm not sure you understand what motivates people who are motivated to acquire that sort of money.
Hint: it is not the need for money as most of us understand it.
