  3. Another view on The State of Sci-Fi MMOs · · Score: 2, Interesting

One of the good things about SciFi MMOs is that they come with no baggage, it is quite possible to create a whole setting that is original. As you game and read the missions you get a feel for the world and it settings. Fantasy often comes with a lot of baggage, mostly it must have magic, elves, dwarves etc. So it isn't always open to do new things.

I think one of the reasons SciFi MMOs suffer (besides its general lesser appeal to non-SciFi people) is that range combat is always rather poor. Despite all the progress, it still takes a large amount of bullet/lasers/... to kill anything and the range is very limited. Obviously it is so for game reasons, but one can't help but feel a sense of disappointment.

Tabula Rasa is (was) one of the games that got SciFi right, the long range class worked great at longe range (sniper) and they came up with some new weapons that both worked and made sense (polarity gun and injector). And there were a lot of background story and a plot to boot, it was more than just a mission/kill fest.

Then there are games like Ryzom (mostly fantasy, with some SciFi), which have completely new races and world/creatures which are able to break the fantasy mold of elves etc.

  13. Shocking? Why? on The State of UK Broadband — Not So Fast · · Score: 1

Shocking state of British broadband revealed.

latest figures from the Office of National Statistics, which show that 42.3% of broadband connections are slower than 2Mb/sec.

Why should that number worry anyone?

The 42.3% is taken from the average of all the broadband connections, but it doesn't tell us how many of those with sub 2Mbit connections only bought that kind of connection. If, say, half of all broadband costumers only bought a 256Kbit connection, why should we care about the average of all users.

If this was about costumers that bought a 2Mbit, and didn't get what they paid for, your had something to write about, but as the article points out, it isn't.

"The proportion of broadband customers unaware of their connection speeds has continued to grow - 55% were unaware of their connection speed (actual speed),"

If they don't know, is it because they don't notice any limitation when they are online, and hence have more speed than they are using or are in need of? High speed connections are nice, but if you don't use it, it isn't really worth that much.

Nevertheless, the Ofcom Consumer Satisfaction report claimed that almost a fifth of broadband customers were unhappy with the speed of their connection.

Would be interesting to see the speeds of the connections they were unhappy with, how many were over 2Mbit.

Some may say it is harsh to just kick it out on the street, to fend for itself. But it will be interesting to see how well Windows 3.x does on its own, will it be flipping burgers or will it be working in IT?

Personally I hope it isn't jelous of its younger siblings who gets all the attention, otherwise we could end up with a messy OS gone postal.
