I am ignorant - why does this card need to host a version of Linux? Wouldn't a much less expensive chipset running embedded Forth or some other such environment do the same job faster and better? Is the upside of writing card-specific applications really that great? Why would UDP processing require a 400Mhz cpu and consume 5-10W?
Cursors! You lucky, lucky, lucky b*stard! We didn't have such luxuries, no sir'ee! We had cards, punched cards, and not too many of them, by Jove! And we didn't dare punch 'em. We stole sticks of charcoal from dustbins to enter the Hollerith codes onto a card and then feed them into a reader one at a time. Then we'd rub off the marks to reuse the card, 'cause if we didn't our admins would kick our rears out of the center and call us wastrels. Cursors! That's like candy!
Arguably his best work, Lord of Light postulates human refugees who fled from a devasted Earth to land on a planet dominated by beings who gave up their physical forms to become energy, based on "Universal Fire". Once the humans land, they realize they want bodies - human bodies.
Using high-tech cloning and other methods, the colonists begin to develop strange talents and powers (Attributes and Aspects) based on the deep mythological patterns of their past plus cold-blooded calculation. They battle against the demons to carve a place for themselves. The mightiest minds become avatars of the ancient Hindu deities.
I can't think of a setting with more potential for an MMPORG than Lord of Light. It already has most of the cliches built right in: reincarnation, magic and technology, random combat with an infinite supply of enemies, leveling to godhood, PvP, and all of human mythology to choose from. Zelanzy focused on the Hindu ship, but I think he hints there were others - it's a big planet.
Turbine's plans to have very small servers - did I actually read 200-300 per server? may mesh with the need to dramatically reduce lag.
Since they are proposing an almost-twitch game they'll get hammered by people complaining about the lag.
Small servers -> less server-based lag and also could imply less network latency depending on server locations and connectivity.
However, the downside is finding someone compatible to play with when you're on. I wonder if they are intending something like City of Heroes instanced locations (Steel Canyon, Steel Canyon 2, etc) that keep the number of heroes down to a reasonable number in an area but give you lots of opportunities to find pickup teammates. COH has instanced missions also - they work fine and clearly all new MMPORGS will have something similar.
All in all, Turbine seems to be on the right track. They should be heartened by the awesome launch of COH - the MMPORG market is far from saturated.
We had less than 100 heroes total and most of us were upper 20's - 30's or sidekicked up to that level.
We routed the invaders time and again with fairly minimal losses.
A real-life person was controlling the commander. He had some special powers and was very difficult to bring down, but eventually we did.
I was level 20, but sidekicked up to 34 so I did my fair share of damage to the ungodly invaders. Took a slew of shots of my team (3 beauties plus little old me). Good time had by all. Much less laggy than similar events I participated in back in the early days of Asheron's Call.
I recommend COH to casual gamers who don't want to twist their real lives around to have fun playing a game. I was always able to play 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there and feel like I was making progress and having fun.
One would think the developer of the Rollercoaster Tycoon franchise (not to mention the beloved Transport Tycoon Deluxe game)should be somewhere in that list.
Has anyone other than Will Wright made more money than he has with a single franchise?
Perfectly acceptable and normal employment practice. If you have solid professional relationship with your current management then you shouldn't worry about: 1) being considered a greedy troublemaker 2) why you weren't being properly compensated already.
Since salaries and duties seem to match, you have the luxury of considering other factors, like the impact on your commute, if any.
