    The exterior of the base of the iMac is 10.6". The mobo has to be smaller to be able to FIT INSIDE.

    I remember going through SQL Server 7 training at MS and them telling us it doesn't support raw disks anymore. I always thought it was a dumb thing to do. *shrug*

    MSDE _is_ SQL Server throttled for = 10 users and without the visual tools.

    SQL Server 6.5 was able to store the database on a RAW disk. In SQL Server 7.0 Microsoft made the stupid decision to quit supporting RAW disks and now the database has to reside on top of NTFS. Sounds like they're going to have to redo everything they threw away in the name of "progress."

    Apple has given the QuickTime file format to the MPEG consortium for MPEG4, they provide the QuickTime Movie Trailers service gratis, and they give away Streaming Server with the code.

    Shouldn't they be entitled to a little bit of money ($29.99 for QuickTime Pro) if you want to watch the largest trailer they have which in turn costs them the most in terms of bandwidth?

    Because PDF isn't about the same thing that HTML is about. PDF is about preserving the document's formatting precisely.

    Can you explain all of the free PDF distillers?

    Can you explain how Apple was able to manage Display PDF for their new display engine in OS X?

    Your comment's reasoning implies that Mac OS X counts as a UNIX system. Mac OS X is not a UNIX® brand system.

    Linux is not a UNIX brand system.
    Many web developers like to develop on a system known to share some behavior with the production server.

    As a web developer, I must say this is simply not true. I don't care if the system I'm developing on shares any characteristics with the web server. I imagine the only sort of "web developer" that would care, would be the kind that uses Frontpage.

    The contract won't be up for renewal. Pixar is currently under the opinion that they would be better off with out Disney once their contract expires.

    Apple developed a file system exerciser that is helping the open source community greatly. You choose to only see Apple using open source technology -- which is kind of the point of open source technology. And fail to see what they give back. Which is a lot. A lot more than they are required to.

    [22:59] [_jkh] there haven't been a _lot_ of effects on FreeBSD from my Mac OS X work, but there have certainly been more lines of communication set up and there's a definite advantage to being able to communicate important bits of information back and forth

    Why the hell should Apple port any of their iApps, Aqua, or Display PDF to Linux? What good would it do Apple? None.

    Apple will continue developing closed-source apps for its operating system, and it will continue giving back to the open source community through its tools and enhancements it makes with Darwin. Isn't that enough? How greedy do you have to be?

    Anyway, I thought that there was a working version of QuickTime for Linux, you guys just don't have the Sorensen codec so you'll have to wait for when/if MPEG4 is the standard codec QuickTime uses.

    Scale effect is still an animation. It's just a faster animation than Genie.

    Asking for a password for an administrative user confuses users that aren't administrators. It's much better to give a message stating what is required, and instructing them to click the lock to make changes.

    It's easy to change the "slow animations". Just right-click on the Dock, select Minimize Using:Scale Effect.
