Back in college I was in electricity & magnetism lab with someone that looked just like Lazlo from Real Genius. I used to see him walking through the Physical Sciences Building on the weekend all the time... the guy had the same mannerisms too. It was freaky. Does anyone know why Extrans formatting no longer appears to work?
There is a noticable write time when I take 1600x1200 pictures ("fine" quality). I'd have to pay attention next time I take a 1024x768 picture to see if there is much delay for the write time.
Deleting a specific image takes about a second, as well as formatting the entire memory stick.
Reading from the stick is very fast, even the MPEG movies I've taken.
I have a Sony DSC-F55 digital still camera that uses memory sticks. They are actually pretty neat. My camera came with a 4MB stick. An 8MB stick is $30 (I think), a 32MB stick is $100 and I think the 64MB stick goes for about $160. You could fit a lot of pictures on a 32MB memory stick. That thing will pay for itself after about ten "rolls".
The memory sticks will also be supported by the PlayStation 2. So, I think they will have a good chance of catching on here, unlike the MiniDisc.
The coolest thing about memory sticks are that they have a mechanical switch on them that is used for write protection -- just like on 3.5" floppies.
Does MP3.com's Beam-It software work with the studios' CD's or is it limited to MP3.com CD's? I tried to find this information on their Website when Beam-It was first announced, but everything was a little ambiguous.
I worked for Verbatim about two years ago. The figure that was quoted to me for a stamped CD with jewel case and liner notes was on average $1.25. This is for your average <= 5 page liner, not the books some bands have.
I've had a CD player since the late eighties and I have only had to replace two CD's. I had to replace my Art of Noise - Who's Afraid Of because in Jr. High I threw it like a frisbee to show people how resilient it was, and some pretty deep and jagged scratches were the result. I had to replace my Soup Dragon's CD (can't remember the album title) because I spilt 409 on it, which basically put holes in the aluminum.
I'm not saying you're wrong about making backups of all of our home audio/video, but I just don't get it when people say their CD's have worn out. You must not take care of them at all. I honestly can't fathom the kind of abuse a CD must go through before it "wears out".
The ability to which consoles are up to the task of beating a PC at gaming depends on the genre of game.
First Person Shooter: PC wins, because there isn't an input device equivalent to the keyboard (other than a keyboard) for consoles. Were there an ergonomically designed multi-input control unit (kinda like a weapons control unit, but with many more buttons)
Driving: Console wins, there are better controls for consoles (NeGcon), quicker startup, and the environement is much more relaxed (living room)
Fighter: Console wins, there are better joysticks for consoles, quicker startup, and the environment is more relaxed
Real-Time Strategy: PC wins, everything on screen it so small you need high resolution, and the ability to save dozens of games in the middle of a 4 hour long campaign helps
Sony said it was the greatest thing ever or some spin like that. I bought one for my kids and they want to sell it to the neighbors kid and use the money to buy more N-64 games.
It was. The PlayStation revolutionized console gaming. The PlayStation was also at least 2 years old when the Nintendo 64 came out, and it is targeted at an audience that is probably older than your children (15+).
Except for the fact that like the Dreamcast the PlayStation 2 will connect to your monitor. Probably at higher resolutions than the Dreamcast -- which I believe is limited to 640:480.
Best Buy does that here. I hate digital handwritten signatures (I never sign my name, then again that doesn't matter). And, I really hate the idea of making digital key signatures legally acceptable.
Did you stop to consider the effect your actions (cracking the Content Scrambling System) would have on the release of DVD Audio? I really wish you had at least waited until DVD Audio was cemented -- now, they'll either never release DVD Audio or postpone it while thinking of a CSS replacement.
I used to work for Verbatim. One of the optical engineers told me that they stopped their time-accelerated testing of the archival life of CD-R media once they reached 100 years and everything worked fine then.
When CD-R first came out I remembered the rumor was that the data would fade after 2 years... I the guy that started this article just heard that rumor multiplied by 10.
Magneto-Optical has around the same archival life and can be rewritten to for at least 1,000,000 times.
Besides, I still have 5 1/4" disks for my Commodore 64 that are older than a decade and still function.
Just clarification... While WinAmp started out as shareware it is now freeware. Justin must have given up on people registering with his company (Nullsoft).
I believe that the author's intent was to provide enough generalized examples of the faults in OSS UI's to encourage those in the community to do something about it. I don't think he set out to improve one specific window manager or app.
He provided the example that skins are great, but they do not hide users from the inherent faults in the UI itself.
phantomlord was not providing a justification for hatred. What he said is that when you create penalties for thought you are violating the First Amendment, and you are providing those who hate with justification to hate their opposition even more. No matter whether or not their justification is valid.
"Hate crimes" are stupid. Murder is murder. It is a haenous crime that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You don't need to slap on an extra penalty because you think you know what the murderer was thinking when he committed his crime. It doesn't matter! He already committed the worst crime, how much worse can you make it?
If you tack on an additional 10 years in a murder case in which a Blue man kills a Red man because he hated the Red man, all you are doing is furthering his hatred, and that of others like him.
The only way to stop racism is to eliminate agents that cause flare-ups. (including the censorship that evidently the UN is proposing, hate crime laws, affirmative action legislation) And hope that through education, and compassion human kind will eventually give it up.

Raw materials (CD, jewel case, average liner notes) ran about $1.25 a year ago.

When Microsoft is broken up, there will (of course) be a monitoring period. I've heard 5 years mentioned often.

Ha! It's been faster than any other home audio/video format!

Banks can replace your money if it disappears. They're insured. Storage companies cannot replace your data if it disappears.

Blown out of proportion.

I'd love to see a good racing game ported to Linux. Something like Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed or Motorhead.
I'd love to help the community develop their UI's, but I have no idea how or who to help.
Just clarification...
