Are you nuts? You and I can avoid the company in question due to shameless pandering but how many idiots are just going to think "O wow, that ad knew I came near and spake unto me! Cool!" without thinking beyond that? That's right - the same who click on all those popups, reply to spam, obediently watch commercials, etc, etc. Unless you plan to sit by these ads with a bat to club those enchanted by it I don't see why I shouldn't stress about it.
The reasoning behind my preference for ATI is petty although I reserve plenty of scorn for them. In my view the drivers for NVidia have slowed development for open drivers by the community. As they say it works and if that's the case there isn't a huge need to write open drivers. ATI, through their contempt or bumbling (or both), pretty much assures that the community will come forth with open drivers in a more timely fashion. Now that I've seen just how timely that is I won't be buying any recent ATI card.
I understand your point about not releasing crown jewels but can you honestly tell me the tech in an All In wonder 7500 is ATI's crown jewels? Surely they can be more forthcoming with their older hardware. You're right though... 3D is still changing at a rapid clip but that's been happening ever since I built my first machine over 6 years ago. How soon do you think any standardized interface is developed? I don't think it would be a welcome change considering the drivers for new cards are often shoddy upon release and tweaked over time. It's a form of vapor to me. $SWELL_CARD is available now but will only work proper when $COMPANY_FIXES_BUGS.
My comment about NVidia drivers tainting the kernel was just me stating why I don't consider NVidia cards an option since many others posting here seem to speak of how great they are. True, the ATI driver situation is no better but when I bought my card it seemed they were more open with the community and those magical spec sheets were said to be coming soon.
Of course 3D drivers are complex. I'm not expecting magic. There are also many spec sheets. If you read the GATOS mailing list it becomes clear after a while they aren't playing it straight. Those developers who have signed the NDA agreements have gotten scant information after lengthy waits. In some instances the data provided was flat out wrong. Even non-3D stuff (like channel changing for AIW cards) had to be reverse engineered because the docs were no help. Everytime the specs have been released the GATOS team has made things work (even if it entails a lengthy wait due to time constraints). If, after this long, ATI feels the need to protect the intimate details of some of their hardware that is far from new they really have problems or should be lightyears ahead of NVidia. Also keep in mind the ones who get that intimate knowledge of the card are under NDA and can't go giving the secrets away. You can bet ATI would sue hard and fast if that were to happen.
I refuse to taint my kernel by using an NVidia card. On the other hand my ATI AIW 7500 still lacks functionality. The GATOS project is great but crippled and held back by lack of specs. I'm not expecting ATI to come out and GPL code for their drivers. All I ask is that the data sheets for the hardware be made available so drivers can be made. As things currently stand I will not buy any new ATI products. I'm not a gamer and what I have works. I'd like to buy a new card but what good would it be to have a card that isn't supported. If a friend wanted to play games on his box I'd have to recommend NVidia despite my dislike for kernel tainting.
Hahaha. Nutjob certainly applies in this case. Tabs have been working great not only for browsers but for terminals (I use Multi-Gnome-Terminal) and IM (with GAIM). The clutter would be unfathomable without tabbing.
Comments like that guys have me seriously glad I don't use GNOME as my desktop. Flux is my WM and I like it for the most part. Sadly this GNOME idiocy invades other apps. Galeon still hasn't recovered after it attempted to be simplified (the devs would later split and start the near optionless Epiphany). If Firefox could make everything tabs (instead of sometimes opening in a new window) I'd switch but all this hiding of options and we know better than you stuff has me watching alternatives. Sad it's come to that.
Indeed. His metaphor doesn't even hold weight with me. I think of tabs in the browser as more of a stack. I have a paper on top and the rest are all conveniently tucked away until I request one be on the top of the stack. The glue metaphor baffles me.
"Now I can do what I want. I can walk into meetings and tell them they're full of crap, tell them the bullshit they're putting on the board is just that. How do you pay for that? What is that worth?" - Ralph Baer
Got that from a game magazine ages ago. Can't remember which one, but it's a great quote IMNSHO.
For some reason I messed with mount points and never had my swap enabled. I ran for about a month with 1 GB or RAM and no swap without a problem before even noticing. Think I hit 90 days of uptime before something didn't release my graphics display correctly and I rebooted. Linux is ok without swap... I really can't tell any difference with huge files in the GIMP now that I've enabled swap.
Open Office is great for plain text and layout, but it messes up horribly if you have a document with fields or tables. This is not something you use everyday, but people that use it for their work need to be able to fill out a form without having to deal with an address field that runs off the window for some reason. It's the database portion I've been having trouble with. That brings me to another thing Linux lacks: a simple, working database. I just want to make a database of the CD's I own with some special fields (since I'd like to sort by them). Very few requirements: No QT / KDE stuff (I don't have room for it on my machine) and I don't want to have to learn any SQL stuff with it or use a complex frontend for SQL. What does this leave? OpenOffice or Gaby (which is broken in the Debian tree I use). So I'm going the OpenOffice route but it isn't easy. Fields can't be longer than 254 chars, some preset values (like for bool) don't work, and sorting doesn't work. Hopefully these bugs will be fixed, but think of how many people could use something for indexing their recipes or other random stuff. Nerds whine about how people use spreadsheets for everything but what's the alternative? Setting up Apache, mySQL, and phpmysqladmin?
I think it's a different situation in Svenska than it is here in sunny California. You see we have these crazy people who should be institutionalized but are loose in the cities. It used to be when you heard somebody talking to themselves you stayed away because they were insane. It leads to a person being wary about who they are around. Naturally a cell phone causes the same kind of feeling. I have to look and see who it is and make sure it's a cell phone and not a nutcase.
We also have lots of people who THINK they can drive while jabbering on the cell. Do you have that there?
Your last comment about not listening is off the mark. Some people are loud enough you cannot tune them out. Do you ever get bothered by noises? If so why are you listening to them in the first place?
Here's the problem in my neck of the woods (Northern California). In my apartment complex we are charged for water. Fair enough. Problem is we get hit for $28 for sewer regardless of how much or how little we use. On the other hand water is about $2 out of the bill and the processing fee is $3. Billing like this gives people little incentive to conserve water since no matter what you do you're going to pay $31 a month even if you don't turn on the tap.
The Debian X packages have a problem with some SiS chipsets!!!
I installed from Knoppix long ago and having been updating since then. I installed the new X packages and rebooted only to get the dreaded screen "melting" screen that happens with some SiS chips. Problem was this didn't just happen when exiting X, it also happened when starting X. Whoops. Of course the testing and stable trees had the same problems.
This screwed me of using X unless I wanted to compile the whole thing myself (on a notebook? No thanks). Thankfully I had just imaged my hard disk a few days ago using Knoppix and was able to restore. Look here for instructions (hint: start with cheatcodes dma 2 and leave the thing alone while restoring).
Yes, there are inappropriate situations in which to use a cell phone, but what makes me mad is all the self-righteous people who glare at you if they see you with a cellphone to your ear ANYWHERE, even in totally "appropriate" situations. (Yes, there are quite a few such people.)By yakking on your cellphone in a place like a museum you are giving the inadvertant signal that you don't want to be part of the group on tour. This is a small slight to the others, intentional or not.
The other thing "cellies" seem to forget is that it disrupts other tasks. I can't count the number of times somebody has nearly knocked me over because they couldn't handle walking and talking at the same time. And even in your so called acceptable places there are problems that arise. Suppose I'm on a bench reading and somebody sits next to me talking on a cell. It disrupts my reading but my reading does not disrupt their conversation. Don't automatically assume the call is more important than my reading.
I'm beginning to suspect that what really annoys people about public cell phone usage is that they are missing out on half of conversation that they would really like to listen in on in its entirety.Get a fucking clue. Would you get annoyed if people all of a sudden got a cue to start talking to walls or themselves in loud voices? How many times to you see somebody bellowing at the butter in a grocery store. I could care less what they are saying, it's where and how they're saying it.
Agreed, but it does affect me in the end because the morons will ensure these ads stick around. Just like spam.

I think my old roommate did this with Icecast. From his comp in CA to me in MN at the time (I was using DSL) it wasn't bad but the audio lagged a bit.
I remember using the autorun on OS 7 to execute an AppleScript. Pop in a floppy and have the files automatically copied to the desktop.

Don't forget there is Jeb Bush who could very well run for president too. That could give us, at worst, 16 straight years under Bush's!
My sister used to remove the grapes from the stems in the store so she wouldn't have to pay for the weight of the stems.
Here's where it stands currently:
I give the article a 62.

I think Galeon can even be used as a Kiosk. I remember somebody working it out on the mailing list about a year ago.
Piggy Bank
Life Preserver (I know gnome uses this someplace else, can't remember where)
Food in a tupperware like container
Try DeskNote.
When is there going to be in icon for Search / Google?

I'll be filing a bug report on this one for sure.
