  1. Re:Trends on Have Fujitsu Harddrives Been Failing in Record Numbers? · · Score: 1

"Heat's another factor; modern drives run damn hot - you really want a fair bit of airflow around them, either from your normal case intake fans and convection, or dedicated active cooling. Just because it runs fine doesn't mean you're not cutting it's lifetime in half, or worse."

My thoughts exactly. At 7200 or more RPM modern IDE drives get way too hot. SCSI drives have spun faster than that for a long time, but they're more often used in high-end servers where they're more likely to be properly cooled. It doesn't help that manufactures are trying to cram them into tight spaces with very little airflow. If you care for your drive at all, install active cooling on it and give it room to breathe! It's a lot cheaper than replacing your drive. I use one of these on each of my drives. They're pretty quiet and cheap.

Perhaps you should read my comment again. Since their thinking they can ban such things depends on their interpretation of the constitution, the word "could" in my comment obviously does not refer to their capability. "Could" rather refers to the constitutionality of banning these things. They cannot do it without defying the constitution. Of course they do it every day anyway. Thank you for blessing us with your great display of intelligence douche bag.

Actually, there is also a large fan on the radiator in nearly ever case. A large fan at a low RPM can usually do the job well so noise isn't an issue, but if that fan fails the radiator won't be doing nearly as good a job as it had been, and you could be in danger of cooking some components.

I really don't think this is viable for consumer systems. It makes it much more difficult to replace a component. Most people won't have any idea if their water cooling system goes bad until it's too late. How many times has a fan gone bad without your noticing? A dying fan certainly makes it's presence known. There are inline flow meters that can sound an alarm if flow falls too much, but I'm not so sure I trust them. Besides, who wants to be bothered to check the coolant in their computer ever so often?

My video card and monitor can easily reach 1600x1200. Why don't I use that? The UI cannot scale usefully to higher resolutions. UI elements do not get more detailed at higher resolutions, they get smaller. To a point that's good, but when your task bar (or whatever imitation) is only a quarter-inch high you have some real issues that need worked out.
