  1. I use my Tecra's thumbscanner on Password Complexity in the Enterprise? · · Score: 1

Once you sign up your thumb, you just swipe your thumb and youre logged in. With further swipes, you can make it remember passwords to various websites and the likes.

So get a complex password, and put it in a piece of paper in your wallet. Then use the thumb device to 'remember' it and just use your thumb. Its faster than typing the password, and breaking it is currently hard (not enough hacker culture knowledge out there to break it quickly).

My friend spent a little while yesterday trying to break it and failed. I dont know why he even tried.

IBM has standard PC keyboards with the scanner built in. I'm getting one of those for my desktop, its addictive!

Question: Where Should One Go for Unix/Linux Training?
    Answer: to your computer.

    UNIX cannot be learnt by:
Chapter 1: ls, cd, mkdir, rmdir, chmod
    Chapter 2: ps, dmesg, netstat
    Chapter 3: sendmail, c libraries
    Chapter 4: Dev API
    Chapter 5: Advanced
    Appendix A: Commands
    Appendix B: Versions
Appendix C: Ethics, privacy, other shit.

To learn UNIX, get a copy on a media, get a computer and set targets.
Heres how I was trying to learn all about HP-UX:

Chapter 1: Buy an HP9000 workstation on ebay, and download test OS
Chapter 2: Download sample Domino and Oracle.
Chapter 3: Install and configure Domino and Oracle.
Chapter 4: Skim through the cert requirements, read up a little and give the damn exam.
Appendix A: How to use google
Appendix B: How to use google groups
Appendix C: How to find time for it all

So honestly, if youre not hands-on, you dont know it. You cant read how to ride a bike. Some people read about how to fly and airplane, but you dont get pilotage from a book.

What company is that anyway, and do they have openings?

  4. Re:They're technically all computers on PS3 Apparently A Computer · · Score: 1

Theres a difference. A computer is quite general. A console is very specialized.

Take a console. Or router. Or PDA. And run an OS that is quite manageable by the user.
Add modular programs that you can add and run from the device, all kinds of programs. And you have what is commonly known as a 'computer'.

Now take a PC. Either run a special compilation of QNX or strip down Windows or Linux so only one app is run, or one group of preset apps. Take away the keyboard/mouse if theyre not used. Youve got a terminal/kiosk/console/router/server/PBX. I know where your definition of a computer comes from, but the general use refers to a general and flexible computer.

Thus, for the sake of trade, America has to gradually remove the laws and allow trade to flourish, only to stay in the game.

Its like I have big guns, pointing at others, asking them to buy my products. But I wont buy their products. This can only go on for so long. Microsoft sells to the world, isnt it fair for them to hire from the world too? This is probably more true with IBM.

I can relate to that. I wanted that too.

So I started easy. I built a network of various types after scavenging old 386s.

Next I wanted various networks. Here at home I have a pile of FDDI, ATM, arcnet, tokenring switches, most of which I have setup and know well (except ATM). I also have a pile of ultrasparcs, an hpux workstation, an rs6000 too. I need to know all UNIX. At least be familiar with them all. I NEED an s390 (zseries) and missed a $500 zseries server on ebay 3 years ago for which I'm still kicking myself. I dont have a 600V power supply anyway, and I'll have to play with an AS400 first anyway.

So I realize and understand your requirements. The answer is setting rediculous goals. For me it was setting up the latest Oracle on each of the UNIX machines, interconnected with each type of network. Just GETTING to this goal taught me a heck lot although I never reached it.

Anyway I'm busy with work these days. Its a good job with lots of challenges. Tonight I have to setup two openbsd machines with CARP so that the two unreliable wireless connections (layer 3) can be made more reliable between two buildings. I dont have a budget for cisco routers to do the same, so I have to research learn and improvise.

If youre after web technologies, just setup a webserver and run a java app, a php webmail and portal, a ruby app and slashcode (to learn perl). Youll run into problems. Then youll have to debug it. That will force you to understand it and sift through it.

Of course you'll have to have a rudimentary understanding of these technologies first. Just build a basic php webpage accessing a mysql server on your computer.

OK I can make do without sms if the quality is good enough and I get 5 hrs out of it. Reception has to be good too. Lastly it doesnt hurt if the high quality product is cheap enough too.

I've tried using the web interface on my phones, tried adding special java apps. I hate it. I dont want it even. I've been considering getting a blackberry to use the features that I actually have on my cell, but the data transfer fees of the blackberry are too high for me.

But phonemakers are not listening yet, and I have to charge my phone every night.
