"...removing the world's Web servers and replacing them with half the number of UltraSparc T1-based systems would have the same effect on carbon dioxide emissions as planting 1 million trees."
but how does this compare to the resource cost of producing all those chips? how much energy is put into the fabs, and how much waste product is poured out into either the ground, rivers, or land fills [or, hopefully, cleaned up and recycled much as possible.]
yes. 3.7 +/ 1.5 results in a range of 2.2...5.2M. so if they were interested in presenting one figure, rounded to the nearest integer, they should have said:
When will pervasive broadband, peer-to-peer sharing, and availability of downloadable digital media start to improve the quality of the media/content that is available, not just the delivery mechanism via which that content gets to me?
"Lost?" Come on. I don't even watch that stuff on TV let alone waste bits from my broadband connection to download it...
Produce something worth watching and I'll go back to watching TV.
With enough money paid to the right powerful people, big rich corporations like ClearChannel will pay someone to solve the issue of closing this supposedly "uncloseable" Pandora's box.
P.S.: I know that there's already a gvim server concept: when you issue a command to open a new file it does so in an existing gvim window, but it "splits" that window first.
I don't care for this. I prefer to let the window manager manage windows (its purpose) and have the editor just do editing, not "window like" management.
I talked with Bram about this at OSCon a couple of years ago, so he's aware of the request -- and many people have made it.
When will gvim support "one server process, multiple windows?" I am not a fan of using multiple buffers, split in one window (except in certain situations like diff and vertical split).
I'd like to be able to have one vim process running that keeps a single editor context (remembering stuff like last search pattern, last ":" command, etc.), but lets me view one file per window, having more than one window/file open.
Additionally, I'd the ability to issue a vim command at the shell prompt which does: "open this file in a new window." Once that new window is up, it would connect with the single vim process, and have access to search/command history. _____
I know I can do all of the above with emacs -- there's an emacs server concept and a command line that can be used to pop new windows. I choose, however, to use vim.
allergy to chemicals? what chemicals are you talking about? the only chemicals present are soaps used to wash the bedding. the washer does put the fabric thru a rinse cycle, so there is little left after that is thru.
i made no mention of pesticides in my post. what pesticides are you talking about?
If you look closely, the White House is blurred out in Google maps. As is the capitol and the pentagon. The general footprint of each building is clear, but whatever [security sensitive, no doubt] devices/structures exist on the roofs cannot be seen.
I saw an allergist (M.D.) several years ago and discovered I'm allergic to many things -- especially dust mites, molds, fungii, etc.
He noted that bedding (sheets, blankets, pillow case, etc.) as well as pillows and mattresses are all hotbeds for nasty little bugs that, among other things, cause allergic reactions for some people. (BTW, it's the "waste products" of dust mites feeding on dead skin that are the allergen for many people.)
His advice:
(1) wash ALL of the bedding (sheets, blankies, barriers) in the hottest water your washing machine provides, and do so every week.
(2) get pillow and mattress allergen barriers (allergen barrier pillow encasings). As you typically cannot wash your pillow nor your mattress, these devices will help contain much of the nasties in a sealed environment.
Adhering to this wash schedule has made a huge difference for me. If I fail to wash the bedding one week, I get much more congested by the time I awake in the morning. If I stay on schedule, I feel much better.
So two hundred people are going to say this, I'll try to be first:
There is no real way to verify a Yahoo account-holders age when s/he registers. If the kidz want in, they'll simply lie when they type in their age.
Once inside, they can tell the pedophile that they are "12 and cute..."
Is Spitzer really unaware of this? If he is aware, then this is simply another headline to aid in his eventual goal of running for governor, then president...
Our product ships on pretty much every nix out there (32 and 64bit versions of: x86 linux, sun, ibm, hp, etc.) and so is quite portable.
I still develop in Studio b/c I agree with the poster about it being the best dev.env out there.
Of course, I schlep the code over to unix for testing before checkin, but i still spend most of my time in Studio [in a vmware windoze session running on my linux box, btw].
Why doesn't GM focus their resources on building better vehicles? If they were to run longer between experiencing problems, this would mitigate the necessity for Buck Rogers style remote diagnosis.
I am a former Mac person who has been running windoze since MacOS 9 days. I never did try MacOS X, although was thinking earlier this year about picking up a Mac since it has 'nix under the hood.
With performance reports like the one referenced by this/. posting, I definitely won't be buying a PPC Mac. I'll wait for Intel Macs next year.
What overall effect will this have on Mac sales? I'm a programmer geek -- do folks think the desktop publishing / music crowds will also hold off on buying new Macs? Or will it make little difference to them?
I picked up a Sony Clie a couple of years ago, but returned it because it didn't multitask AT ALL.
Example: (1) use the browser to connect to a T-Mobile hotspot and enter login information; (2) surf a bit; (3) find some info you wish to retain, so copy it to the clipboard (say an address); (4) "switch" to the Memo application and paste the text -- at this point the browser _QUITS_; (5) "switch" back to the browser -- you are no longer connected and must re-login to the hotspot -- also you lose the context of the page you were at.
Has Palm fixed these issues? Or was this a Sony implementation problem?
I've hired an infinite number of monkeys, and seated them at an infinite number of PCs running Eclipse (with File->Quit disabled).
I expect them to have finished writing my code for me by Monday.

Hey! They're in violation of equal opportunity hiring laws if they have no women on staff.
Oh, wait. They're in Utah. All the women must be at home in order to have that polygamy thing work...

Mirros?
2004 revenue was just under $122 BILLION, with net income of $11.8 BILLION.
So the fine is 2.5% of one year's net income, 0.25% of one year's revenue, and a mere 0.14% of their total assets.
This is incentive against cheating in future? How??

Hey! He's his own distro
Wouldn't the effects of a scuttled modern warship (oil slick, hot reactor core on the bottom...) be fairly disastrous for nearby marine life as well?
Could someone in the know please comment on how the above could affect marine life, vs. one pulse that saves the ship?
How wide an area could be affected by both types of events (i.e., what is the range of the shockwave weapon?).
Why'd they move the information column from being to the right of the map image, to now being left of the map image?
I had gotten used to its [arbitrary] location, but moving it seems [also] arbitrary.

after, on the 30th.
Note that these are false color images: clouds are white and light blue, land is green, water is darker blue or blue-grey.
I consider the port out of my home office to be inherently insecure.
None of my machines on my network get to send to/from that port without first going thru my NATting and rule-driven Linux firewall machine.
They can hack the DSL modem thru its "insecure backdoor" all they like, but they'll meet only my silent firewall -- just like everyone else.
Why? People were stealing entire rolls of stamps from the shops and selling them on eBay.
If you have legit stamps you have until some time this month to redeem them. Then Subway's "customer loyalty" program is gone forever.
BASTARDS. I used those stamps legitimately and consistently for years; Now these jerks have cost me my 10% discount.
