Ah. Well, it was at night, so they had the increased power, and they don't really tell you where they're coming from ('cause they're busy doing 15 hours of ads a day or whatever).
FM stations don't reduce power at night, that's the AM band.....
In my town it's $75 no questions asked. There was a laptop theft ring being run out of an Amoco gas station which got busted a few months ago. The cops went to Best Buy and bought a $1500 laptop, took it to said gas station and received $75 for their services. My tax dollars at work.;-)
Not surfing pron, but having your speedometer, tach, oil pressure blah blah in front of you so you dont have to look away from the road to make sure you didnt speed past that cop.
Got it. My 2001 Corvette has exactly what you describe. Fuel and water temp too....
What is the difference between this one vs. the item discussed here?
Well...rugedization, mic pres with phantom power, professional I/O, accurate metering, high sample rates and wordlength, choice of lossless or compressed recording (MP3...where's the Ogg option?) simultaneous recording to CF and HD for security...
I can do all of this already. So what's so great about this new device ?
I haven't had this device in my hands yet, but from what I can tell it's a pro device in a ruggedized package. It has a lot of the features that a professional would require and would take a beating in the field. Your Zaurus doesn't even compare to this piece of gear. Having done film shoots in completely crappy conditions (rain, dust, mud, snow, you ge the idea...) I can say at least a couple things: One, if I showed up to record with a Zaurus, I'd be sent away and never called for a job again, and Two, that Zaurus would be toast in a matter of minutes.
Your Zaurus is a fine tool for certain things, but this is not one of them.
I guess to answer your question, what is so great is that it includes a lot of features at a great price. Compare it to the HHB unit that was mentioned elsewhere...$10k+ so $2k is pretty reasonable.
The article states that he had a bass player play a riff from this particular song. It was not sampling. If using a riff is theft the entire genre of "The Blues" is screwed.
The consumer electronics industry has been eyeballing FireWire (1394) for a while. It makes for one hell of an universal interconnect between all your digital devices, rather than having coax spaghetti and 20 IR or IF devices all over the place. Instead you have one FireWire hub, going to your receiver, your DVD player, your VCR, your CD changer, and your HDTV decoder, and one remote that tells one device what to tell the others..
Not without talented people to run those "Pro Tools" systems they can't.
This is the real problem with "Pro Tools", which is now the "Kleenex" of the audio world. Anybody can go out spend $5000 on a Mac, a couple mics, and a ProTools interface and suddenly they think they own a studio. You can't buy a good set of ears. I shouldn't care too much though, at least half of my audio work these days is cleaning up screwed up projects that these so called "studios" tried to produce.
This is one music industry problem that you can't blame on the RIAA....but blame them anyway, they need it.
I think it's also contributed to tons of music being released that should have never seen the light of day...I mean really, do we need another 12 bands that sound like Alice In Chains? The landscape is flooded with bad songs, and bad sounding records.
(Some) People will look like fools with or without a gigantor wristwatch.
The battery life however, is what will most likely be the big issue. I can't believe what the article says about battery life. 4-8 hours? Riiiiight. Unless that's with the phone part turned off.
While I'm happy to se that they're still talking about manned space missions, is this the best they could do to boost the economy? I don't want to wait until 2018 for a bull market.
Digigram is making headway into Linux. I will be supporting these folks when I can, they make excellent sound cards. They were one of the few companies that didn't give me blank stares when I inquired about Linux support at the recent 114th AES (Audio Engineering Society) convention.
My question to the/. community is: what do we do to change this? We are arguably the biggest nerd gathering on the planet. Individually we might not have clout, but with the right direction, collectively we might...
Probably nothing. It will all boil down to International Treaties. All the geeks on the planet will be able to do precious little.
I was wondering how much of this 'psychology' is cultural. Do these programmer 'sweat shops' in non US (or non Western) locales suffer the same problems of distraction that as their US counterparts apparently do? I feel I'm lucky that I'm in a situation where distractions are kept to a minimum (well, really it's that I control my distractions myself) but if I were to be thrust into a more distractive environment my creativity would certainly suffer. Does the guy in Elbonia feel the same way, or does he work in an active environment with no loss of creativity.

You forgot:
#. Profit!
The Knoppix is of course the penultimate....
Do you feel?
that it will someday be the EX-DCMA.
Damnit, mod me down for redundant....I missed the other Corvette comment.

Why not just use Gigabit or 10-Gigbit ethernet? "Foundations for Sound over Ethernet (SoE)"

Although it could be a long time until it gets there and a lot of folks are going to be...er...inconvenienced by the provisions therein.
We need to stop this madness before it grows stronger roots.

I'd love to see it differently however....
What will I do when my users are no longer complaing about the messages from www.golarger.com?

32meg will get a lot of folks by, plus you've got to sell lots of overpriced accessories such as RAM upgrades.
I think wireless should be standard in these and dump the IR. Who uses that thing? Oh, except to control your TV.
Yet I notice that YOU did not get it either. Ergo, you are also a FAILURE.
/dev/null, do not collect root.
Go directly to
Nor did I get it.....
I do not deserve this honor.
