I just went though a strikingly similar situation. The old company provided a counter offer that was higher than the new company's offer when I put in my notice. My decision to make the move boiled down to weighing the less obvious options...commute has turned out to be way more valuable than I had thought. I have better growth potential and a better job in general at the new place, but I really underestimated how lousy commuting was until mine became sub-five minutes. Don't disregard your time.
Indeed it is. Bigger than Tevatron, which was bigger than the Cyclotron, and so forth. The technology in question has been *slowly marching ahead incrementally since the 1960s, which is what Stephenson is pointing out.
Bingo. The issue is with timing / vs / incentive. The decision makers themselves would have been 'blacked out' regarding their stock holdings, so the legal issue would be with the announcement's timing, not with the decision itself. That said...HP's legal team was, without doubt, well involved. Good luck proving anything nefarious went down in court.

The clandestine nature of the whole thing leads me to believe Rossi has Atlas Shrugged on his mind. Be on the lookout for dollar sign cigarettes...
Hawaii begs to differ.
