  1. Great Idea, just follow through Solidly. on Novell Ponders "Open-Source Apps Store" · · Score: 1

I wonder if it would act like the standard linux repositories. Just search and download. If this is followed through and done correctly, an open source "App Store" could give power to some not so well known apps.

My only concern is with the title of "store" what will they be charging for?
Additionally could this implicate free software as we saw on the iPhone, lots and lots of extremely hampered trial-ware?

  2. More taxes? on Download Taxes As a Weapon Against File-Sharing · · Score: 1

We wouldn't need more taxes on trivial things if the current US government would stop spending money like candy.

As far as tax evasion is concerned. Al Capone has actual $$ income. The thing that is being muddled is that a download of an item from illegal methods constitutes direct income. When in fact there is no $$ income at all. Politicians would like for us to view it as money that comes out of thin air, just like the US government and printing money it doesn't have.

    I tend to agree.

But XP is nearly 8 years old now. Yes I understand that if a software isn't broken, then don't fix it approach. (look how long windows 3.1 lasted) But the fact remains that there is software coming out that has built in native support for newer hardware types and can better take advantage of what the hardware has to offer. XP has 3 service packs that increase the ability for the operating system to fully take advantage of current hardware. Even still, XP64 doesn't fully scale to fully utilize more than a 2 core processor.
I am not advocating that windows 7 will be all glory and shine. But I am merely expressing that as a whole the XP platform is becoming dated and should be replaced to better support emergent hardware.
Before you start going off and saying "With Linux you don't ever see this" Wrong. When XP was released in 2001, the linux market was comprised of Redhat, Debian and Suse. From then, in 2004 Ubuntu was released. Ubuntu was a great leap in consumer level linux desktop enviroments. I would like to see people running the original Ubuntu 4.10 with only hot fixes.

The thing I am getting at, is that no matter how much you hot fix a operating system. After some time the underlying core will have to be rebuilt.

I think as far as the industry is concerned. A lot is dependent on familiarity. Likewise, most if not all of the big name brand products are built and sold for WIN/OSX. While Linux is nice, it lack the support due to the fact that there are several different versions. I highly doubt companies would be willing to give away the source of "Their Baby" just so Linux users can compile and run it for their specific distro.

I'm not trying to bash Linux at all. I would easily choose to use a Linux based server any day of the week. I just feel that Linux has it's niche, while windows/OSX has theirs.

Interesting to see a personal geotracking API. I am just wondering how will this be any different than having Google maps installed on your cell phone. There are at least a million users with Google maps installed on their GPS enable cell phones. If yahoo intends for GPS tracking and plotting, a garmin esque service or really what there intended market is.

I can see the usefulness as a meta information gathering tool for a certain area. So perhaps it is more like a free TomTom service but mixed with historical information about a certain area.

I'm just wondering exactly what they are trying to accomplish here other than having another mapping service. While Google maps is almost a required app on any unlimited data plan cell phone.

With this Bill we find Obama giving more and more power to the federal government. Overriding the bill of rights and bypassing everything that our country stands for.

You eventually have to pay more for a "better service" With netflix taking up around 3-4 gigs for an HD movie, not to mention the typical day-day usage, game patches etc... It would put a larger "strain" on the ISP's that don't want to grow up in the digital world.

I myself have been speed throttled for "causing excessive traffic" while watching a netflix movie. I find this disturbing. Do other people also have this issue and or see the major problem occurring?
