In 2005 such a DNS based filter was rolled out here in Denmark, First toured as a filter against Child pornography, as a none binding aggrement between the danish branch of save the children and the biggest Isp.
By design its ofcause a none public liste, later in 2006 allofmp3.com was blocked using the same system, then the pirate bay was added, then sites that sells medicin that requires a prescription, and the lates addion was gamling sites that doesnt pay danish tax.
In 2008 the list was leaked ( http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Denmark:_3863_sites_on_censorship_list%2C_Feb_2008 ) , was found to be blocking sites not related to what it was intented to, legitime sites.
It always starts out as against Child pornography, and then they will start put more and more into it.
symantec antivirus products dont spare enough cpu cycles for the backdoor to do any real work, so you should be perfectly safe, its a good as locked up.
well we have this system here in denmark, dns based blocking of child pronograf sites, then allofmp3 was added to the list, thepiratbay was next. Now "illegal" gamling sites, aka we have single monoply for gamling in danmark, Next up sites selling medicin....
all this controlled in a none transpart way, just like the politicians like it.
Fight it, any way you can, onces its inplace its too late, and it WILL expand to block things others than its original purpose.
Great way to track peoples communication, you order the stamp with your mobil phone, so unless its a prepaid they can now check who you send snailmails to easy.
to do it right one would have to say look at the certificate, https:/// was good enough to tell peopel not so much into computers, and it was always at the top, where as the padlock wasnt always in the same place.
Now we have spend years telling people to look at the url for https, to look there if the bar is green fro those extented certificates things, and now they want to do away with it.
Oh and that window that just totally locks up your browers, naa you dont want to know that url anyway, you are smart enough use another brower to get that.
so what kind of range are we talking here, jamming phones on the sidewalks and further in from the street where there happen to be driving cars by ?
Could be fun, on the otherhand not having to navivate around people talking away on their phone, and ignore people around might be concideret a bonus.
best guess is this socalled permant modification is changes to the filesystem nothing more, which for normal users would amount to the same, if their windows platform cant see the card anymore, inserting such a card would not be shown by windows except for people entering the computer management/ disk management and repartiton/format it again.
one has to wonder this days if they even try to fixer their products. Given the rate this problems show up, it maybe they should start to think about starting from scratch with a bloatless reader. Wishful thinking I know, they have gotten everyone to use the bloat in one way or another:(
unless oracle steps up and do provide java for future osX systems, it will be apple that is lossing out. An operating system without java will be unable to provide homebanking for a lot of users, hard to imagine consumers giving up on that.
Having to use a virtual machine just to run an operating system, which has java support, will be a hard sell, especial with the "just works" motto of osx.
we have excatly that system here, with 1year backlog of what sites people have visited, whom you have emails, phoned, etc. But atleast our politicians are begining to question if this is needed, and have talked openly about removing it. that comes after a simular law in germany was found to be illigal accoding to their constitution, and they where forced to scrap it, afterwards there was alot of discustion about if it was even needed.
A study showed data collected with was only used in 0.0005% procent of criminal cases in germany, they still have the option to log data, but now they need prof and can only activate per person and not for the whole population. Lets hope UK looks at germany and act accordingly.
stock markets has never been anything but a glorified Ponzi scheme, not based on the actual value, skilled works or goods of the companies involved. The more they try to fix they little scheme with rules, the more it should be obvious to even the most diehard liberalist.
those tinyurl makes archives mailing lists hell also, have anyone seen or code a tool automatic lookup the real url and replace the tinyurl for archival purposes ?
Lightspark is using a Jit(just in time) compiler framework that as it stands right now is x86 only, there will go a long time before this project can help those that adobe doesnt support with their flash player.
Those using Powerpc, arm are still without any working flash implementation, can only hope it will support those at a later stage, but I am rather pesemistic.
Except for via`s own boards, dell blades and samsung nc20 there aint much out there actual uses it, the mainboards from intel are atleast here alot cheaper than those from via.
For the consumer its down to whats cheaper and what have they heard about, Via never ran big advertisments like intel has done for atom in different mags, so lack of knowledge of the product leads to no comsumer demant.
While the c7/nano compares favoritable to the atom, they have failed to keep up and offer a dual core version, and if you look at linux atleast the situation with via based graphics, is pretty bad compared to intel offerings.
I would go with an older slackware and then upgrade to the newest once you have the net running, the whole problem in your case is the lack of pcmcia support in gPXE,
if you have access to a docking station with a isa,pci bus you might beable to use gPXE and start directly into a new distribution.
Alternativ is just remove the harddrive from the box and installed it on another box and then move it back, works too.
how I long for the good old days, where a supercomputer meant a sexy cray, Sgi, thinking machines blinking led monster. Its just not the same when a supercomputer basicly is the same hardware as we have at our desk. Seems anything today can be a supercomputer, even the ugliest box.
anyone that have been reading Cory Doctorow`s little brother, will see strong parallels to the school computers handed out to the students and how they manged to get around the spyware in them. Wonder what other bright ideers from that book they are going to implementate.

it was a plain and normal forum from what I read, or is suddenly anything facebook, even when you aint having your personal data analysed and sold ?

Sounds great, push ads over a metered slow mobil connection.

Nilfs will have those things, but you`ll have to wait till its production ready.
