Our old binary digit computers have been around for AGES (50+ years in tech time;-)
It is really the time for searching new and more complex computer architechtures if we ever want to have true IA (a la HAL 9000). I always wondered why ppl insist on building neural nets based on ordinary computers rather than building them on dedicated neural hardware (expeeeensive, but needs to be tried more often).
Of course, today's computers do a good job resolving them, but there are too many architechtural limitations. Brains are a hella lot older than computers, and a hella lot more advanced (but very fragile).
if the machine can hack into/. database servers and get all of our real email addresses, then I will consider it really smart (unless/. is running IIS/MSSQL these days, it would require not much intelligence then)
yes, it could, but, whats the point of that, anyway? I sincerely can't figure. if the box is in a 'cold' network (ie, NATed), like all boxes in the corporate world are, how would it help M$ to track the box down?
Oh god! just downloaded the trailer and watched it, and I couldn't believe my eyes... BOFHs computer running windozeNT and bluescreening? thats no BOFH, just a sissie MSCE. shame on them. Besides that, it was ok...
Damn, my *home* network runs at 10mbps. 1Gb/s internet sounds like a dream. but, I live in the woods. probably pretty common there in USA, no?

god dammit, dude... people bitch about M$ bloatware because they are FORCED to use that bloatware. In this case it is pretty different, since you have a CHOICE to use the bloated LILO or the standard one. sheesh. thats why OSS is cool, we can do stupid things with it just for the kicks.
It wold indeed be cool to have your distro compiled with a higher-performance compiler than GCC, especially for types (unlike me) who would exclusively use RPMs instead of compiling their own stuff. But, since this compliler need a different closed RTL than glibc (which someone also pointed that would not complile outside gcc), it would be truly messy as you said (2 c/c++ RTLs loaded is a stupid waste). my bad, we should concentrate on adding this optimizations to GCC instead of hyping on Intel. RMSs bad is not to let some patented optimizations into GCC. maybe someone should fork a x86 backend to gcc to include them. This is a case of zealotrism hurting a lot of people.
What a lamer... now the fact that *some* M$ OSes are so DAMN FUCKING UNBEARABLY UNSAFE AND CRAPPY are due to them being soooo popular? Fuck, no!
The naked truth: M$ OSes are so fucking unsafe because it is TOO FUCKING EASY to write abusive software for it. The environment is too friendly to unwanted code, so any moron (like you) can write a VBShit that wipes all stuff on the computer to oblivion (which is not that harmful at all, since most lusers have nothing worth on their computers anyway), or remain stealth collecting creditcard info and mailing to somewhere (this is where the real beef is).
Now, notice that I said *some* OSes. I had NT on my machine for YEARS before I eventually gave it up (still have it on my laptop tough, to run GPS trackmker and some braindead home banking which only runs in IE (thanks to VM software)) and had 0 trouble. Why? I simply run it as an ordinary USER, and when some proggie says me it needs to be installed with admin provileges, I say "no thanks". And, ofcourse no Outlook nor Office, neither VBscript on it. IF I need to surf on the pr0n or war3z sites, I just use the special account I have on the linux box to do this shit. I wold not dare to do that on NT, even with a special account due to IE's insecurity (read: interaction to the OS as a system service).
Im so fucking tired about people bitching about virii and worms. Learn how to protect yourselves or quit computers, or live with it, your choice. Bitching won't help.
something creative supplies with the drivers for linux - the binary is called "dvdplay-curses". Seomeone should integrate this drivers to the LiVid project - no big deal, from what I saw in the source, but I think it hasn't happened yet. maybe there arent too many linux dxr2 users out there.
Compilers like this will be used mainly by performance freaks, like AutoDESK (it still exists?), Adobe and folks that do intensive-cpu apps and have the cash to pay for an improved compiler to have and edge over competition (see? photoshop xxx rotates a picture 11 degrees faster than paintshop yyy...).
Being an user of a special compiler myself (SDS's cc68000), I think that this kind of compiler has a niche market, and the good old GCC is still the most widely used, and probably will be for ages.
Altough, If this new intel compiler does ELF, I can see MandrakeSoft or RedHat building their RPMs (glibc too - yay!) with it and claiming they are faster than the competition;-).
Thats a question I ask myself sometimes, especially when a kernel upgrade breaks some stuff;-)
Basically, this setup has the advantage of being truly regionfree, so no need to decss stuff, and since I live in Brazil (reg 4) and the yummy stuff is all reg 1, this is also cool.
And, there is the pleasure of hacking for the hell of it too. I pratically rewrote the player interface that kind dudes (Andrew & Lucien) wrote to add things like "goto offset", and also hacked the kernel's ide-cd.c to overcome some quirks of my old drive (it is labeled creative 5x, but it is probably made by Matsushita). If Jen sees what I did to his error-handling routines he would spank me...
Also, the regular players that are good, like sony's, are all regionlocked, so the choices left that are easily unlockable are crappy. Paying to exchange crap by crap is pointless, so I think i'll stick to this setup until the decoder dies (which is unlikely), or the drive dies, if there is no regfree replacement drive available. BTW, are there any region-free last generation drives available these days?
The only thing that pisses me off sometimes is the poor DXR2's rendering of subtitles for some titles. pretty annoying.

software decoders sucks. my ancient creative DXR2 rocks under linux (altough the drive seems to be getting quirkier as time passes...). And it uses like 5% of my powerful k6-2 cpu while playing a movie... and has a tv-out, so no need to watch on the tiny 17-inch CRT. sweet.
I usually can see arp requests when tcpdumping on my linux router's eth0, wich is attached to an ADSL modem. So, I assume that the damn broadcasts are propagating through the modems... right?
I don't think ppl who buys $10.000 DACs are gonna listen to n'sync crap on then... so they can see that as a positive effect, since their teen daughters would be unable to show daddys super-cool stereo to their girlfriends... at least not playing that crap...
woohooo... in my creative 5x + dxr2 card under Linux, thank god, no warnings... just "dvc -cTx -Sx" and start right into the movie. No menus and other stuff either... but little cute interactive menus are for sissies, anyway... btw, regionfree too... and costs nothing these days...
I may be wrong, but I think Office cost as much or more than windoze. So why the hell I would use Lindoze and still have to pay for office? IF I was a PHB, I would simply make my employees use linux+staroffice, which is much more bang for the buck. Office apps are all the same crap anyway. At least staroffice does not have the clippy.
Actually, I found it to be pretty useless. Just marked Klerk as a foe, assigned a -1 penality to foes, and... Ikes, the page still displays the "Page lenghtener posts"... what the fsck is this? The comments cannot go below -1? pretty useless for me then, since I like to read at Raw&Uncut -1 but some annoying crap like the PLPs and PWPs pisses me off.
