    The SIM (not SIMS) card is, naturally, readable by any application you choose to run on your phone.

    On the other hand, the fact that the devices cannot even be told to run unsigned code makes life *really* hard for developers to test their code ... write it, get MS to sign it, get it back, test it, see it doesn't work, fix it, get MS to sign it, get it back test it, see it still doesn't work, ... etc ... etc ... etc. This would make development of a few months to last a few years!

    It's a common phrase - I've worked at ICL and Sun, and they both use it. It's just another cliche like "singing from the same hymnsheet" and all the other stupid phrases that nobody would use after 5pm.

    Stereotyping oneself may be witty; stereotyping another is not, it is pathetic.

    Showing that stereotypes are wrong is a Good Thing; the post did not do that.

    As you say, civilisation entails accepting others, but it also involves correcting those who are wrong. Preferably in a loving and caring manner.

    because? MS profit on Windows and Office, their cash-cows. They use this profit to do other stuff. The difference between this any any other company would be ... what, exactly? This is not news, this is not even vaguely interesting. If MS made more from their mobile phone business than from Windows, that would be "News for Nerds" *and* "Stuff that matters". This is neither. It isn't even news (and hasn't been for at least a decade)

    Legal judgements need to be provided in a certain way. Pushing out a .txt version could be an option, but the layout and formatting is part of the document, which .doc, .sxw, .txt, .html do not provide.

    It's always seemed to me that GCC was the unsung hero of open source, and Linux in particular.

    Which is why you should be saying "GNU/Linux"

    If you mean the statement, you should say GNU/Linux - if you do not agree with it, then just say "Linux"

    Same as Solaris_x86 was developed way before it was ever released, and continued to be developed after it was announced that it would no longer be available ... keep your options open, make stuff, and if it suits the business, then make it available, but whether you currently want to make it available or not, you need to keep working on it.

    I have the DeCSS source on my site (steve-parker.org) but that's not civil disobedience, it's a public service. I am in the UK (as is the server) and - until December - it is perfectly legal to distribute it. After December, it seems that I won't be able to do so. But at the moment, my country doesn't have a problem with me doing it, so I do it.

    The point is, if I design a site which steals your bandwidth by using your images, most people who view my page can't see the images (if you block external referers to your images) Unless that changes so that most people don't send HTTP_REFERER [sic] you're safe.
