    > THIS IS NOT WHAT A FIREWALL DOES

Once upon a time, "firewalls" were stateless port filters. Usually, they'd just be ACLs on a router like a Cisco, Bay or Ass-end.

Then there were stateful firewalls (yay!)

Now there are content-filtering firewalls (inspect the data in each packet).

The practical implementation of a "firewall" has changed but the fundamental model remains consistent: It's setting up communications rules/filters between one entity and another entity using a program/device that sits on the only path between the entities 8)

    Yes you can.

Funnily enough, RedHat has supported this feature for a little while too (Since RH8/9?). My machine at work (upgraded to Fedora now) does this, then runs xscreensaver and locks the screen after X/Gnome is loaded. Means I can switch it on in the morning and go fetch a coffee without delay 8)

It's not the securest practice in the world: someone could intercept the box before xscreensaver locks the machine but I'm fortunate enough to have trustworthy workmates.

You could run into a problem when powering the UPS from the generators: apparently many UPSs (such as APC ones) have various checks on the AC power input to ensure it's clean power and will not operate if the tests fail.

It will check the phase, for example, to see if it's running at exactly nHz (n is country dependent. In Australia, it's 50Hz.)

Correcting the phase is difficult and expensive, therefore you need a motor that spins at a pretty damn constant nHz, which practically means it needs to be something like a 4-stroke petrol engine (2-stroke isn't constant enough) and requires some pretty accurate control systems.

I am not an EE though so I welcome the more experienced to correct/ elaborate.
