Blizzard dont have any servers in Austrlia! and ping times below 500 when using broadband are rare
Indeed I've pulled out my copy of Brood lately to play on Battle.net. Here's my experience:
Most of the games are called ^^%^$%1*($%&!
The interface is clunky as fuck
Trying to join a game is impossible. The latency is too great and you cop abuse from all the other players for slowing the game down. I don't blame the abusers either: the game slows down and becomes unplayable.
This is 1.5Mbps ADSL in Aust.
So, for me, without something like bnetd I will probably never be able to play online again. Thanks Blizzard! You're not getting another dime out of me for your junk, that's for sure.
When you buy a hamburger, you are paying for a tangible good, not intellectual property. You can't digitally duplicate your hamburger and resell it (or give it away) and destroy the market for hamburgers, so your ketchup story is stupid.
What if it's a book? Can I not lend a book to a friend to read now?
Believe it or not, my mum went out and bought a LCD monitor from a hole-in-the-wall computer store, took it home and installed it herself. She was also wise enough to buy a Viewsonic.
But she's apprehensive about installing software. She knows that Windows is fragile and doesn't want to disrupt the delicate ecosystem. She's been through the "I installed *this* and all of a sudden my machine is slow and/or unstable" one too many times. She gets me or my brother to install stuff for her to ensure the OS is OK post-installation.

Problem with this is...not all societies are civil. And if the civil ones give up the means with which to defend themselves, the uncivil ones will destroy them.
That's what the politicians would like you to think but it's rubbish.
We're a self-deprecating society. We take pleasure in making fun of ourselves and putting ourselves down.
Haven't you ever been to Australia? Come down! Come to Melbourne in November/December/Jan, when it's (usually) nice and warm. The other states have nicer weather but we have nicer people;)
I've never understood why they don't suck up the wholesale/telco arm into the government and let the consumer arm be 100% private.
That way, the government sets the wholesale price, provides infrastructure (thus *will* provide telecommunications in regional areas), levels the playing field for companies needing to lease infrastructure and makes a tidy sum of cash.
Then again our government is the pinnacle of laziness, beaurocracy, elitist arrogance and inefficiency so perhaps it's better private.
It's not, as you pointed out. You can give your friend your book, and you can give your friend your CD. What you can't do is make a copy of the book, or a copy of your CD, and give that to your friend while you keep the original.
Really, it's not that hard to understand.
In Australia you're not allowed to make personal backups of other's copyrighted audio. I break the law every single day because I'm tired of my CDs being ruined in my car. One day I'll buy an mp3 player for the car: that will be a godsend for me. It will be illegal for me to use it though I guess.
Hello Sycraft-fu,
:)
When it comes to backing a loser for consumer technology, Sony is really good at it.
Indeed. I couldn't agree more. I don't hear the death knell of Sony ringing because of it however.
The fact that they *survived* through all these expensive failed technologies illustrates their resilience.
I hope I'm wrong

All I was pointing out was that there is debate on the topic and I cop all this abuse.
Great work fellas. Esp. the dude who called me "shitwit". Your mastery of the Enlish languauge is something to be admired.

Any way you look at it, it seems the PSP, PS3 and Blu-Ray are going to be the end of Sony.
I was with you for your entire post until that final line. I'm afraid it's wishful thinking my man: Sony are very powerful and complete assholes.
We don't have iTunes in Australia because of Sony.

"He" is generic. If you don't like english, you can speak a language where the feminine pronoun is generic.
Really?

Fair point. But why do people keep calling it *nix for Unix or Linux? As a shortcut, it doesn't really work for 'Linux', now does it?
;)
Shhhhh! Quiet man! We all notice this but we never bring it up because we couldn't be bothered fixing it. Let it go...

From TFA:
Unix has been around since Linus Torvalds was in short pants.
Yeah, and Solaris x86 has been around since 1992. Hasn't killed Linux yet.
Indeed. What's more: Linus still wears short pants.

How do I set up my file handlers to deal with this sneakernet thing?
It's a kernel patch but I wouldn't trust the sanity of the author.
Alternatively, if you want to do it all in userspace from Perl, snarf Net::Sneaker from CPAN.
