  1. Re:Resolution, resolution, resolution. And color. on Digital Movies and The Big Screen · · Score: 1

On important point that the article made was that resolution is just one factor in the whole experience.

I would agree that film has the temporary edge when it comes to raw data. However, take that film and transfer it using an analog process to another print. You have now introduced X% noise. Put that film in metal canisters and ship it across the country 5 times. You have now introduce X% more noise. Pass that film through the gate of a projector built during the 60's and you add more noise. As the film degrades over the course of the movie run and as teenage projectionist splice out pictures of naked chicks and Batman, you can see how the original resolution becomes a moot point.

I love the idea and romance of film, but I have a hard time believing that chips can't or won't someday reach parity with light recording chips.

  2. Apple and Novell on Is Novell Doomed? · · Score: 1

Please excuse this post if it is completely assanine as I am basically a Mac weanie eagerly soaking up as much unix as I can - lurking on Slashdot helps.

Would there be any interesting synergies if Apple were to acquire/merge with Novell? I am ignorant as to the respective market caps of the two companies as well as the merits of the technical match-up.

What I do know is that Apple would like to go into the enterprise market in a big way with OSX but that they face a slow uphill climb gaining marketshare. Novell, apparently has some excellent, platform neutral tech that has the respect of enterprise and education customers but they lack glitz.

    Seems like a good match.

Because of past mistakes, Jobs had no choice but to axe it inorder to get profitable again. Besides, as good as the Newton was, it represented a whole other code base to deal with.

  11. Sooner or later on Bell Atlantic/Mac/ADSL Crusade Fails · · Score: 1

I disagree completely on the qiestion of profitability. While the MacOS may be in the minority, it certainly isn't scarce. Apple was selling iMacs at the rate of one every 15 seconds during the holiday season. We're talking about millions and millions of machines out there with onboard ethernet and traditionally low support costs.

Not to mention the fact that Mac users - as a category - are creative types using their computers to push large media files around. They are going to order a service like ADSL in disproportionate numbers to Windows users because they have greater need. We aren't talking about surfing here; we're talking about FTPing 20 MB graphics files to clients and service bureaus.

The fact of the matter is that Bell Atlantic's policy is bad business and sooner or later they will change it. Probably about the time that all of those large Northeastern publishing firms and newspapers start demanding it.

This is everyone's fight. Alot of us geeks may be able to sidestep the bull, but if Linux, BE etc. are going to succeed and proliferate, it will only be in a tolerant and fair network and software environment.

  12. Integration on After Linux-Apple? · · Score: 1

Microsoft would keep their Hardware proprietary if they made hardware. Their business model began and continues to be what it is out of self preservation just like Apple.

Perhaps Apple should have allowed cloning earlier, but they didn't and that's that. I think that Apple is much more likely to be willing to coexist with Linux and eventually move to an Open source model than Microsoft.

As I mentioned earlier, I am just a #%&* Linux Newbie, but let me say, that this is not a Linux interface, but a KDE interface. As I understand it, different destop managers act and look different(ly). I thought the interface was preety cool. As a Mac fan, I was feeling my way around, but I could sense the power of Linux and I know that I am getting hooked.

Booting from the CD is not recommended, I will repost some thoughts that I gave earlier:

First, I noticed that the vmlinux file was downloading as text. I switched to an FTP program and made sure that I wasn't downloading text.

Second, did the unzip of livefilesystem.gz go through alright? Mine expanded to a generic 100MB document. Also, vmlinux downloaded as a 2.2MB generic doc.

Third, does Boot LinuxPPC show up with the icon as an application? and does the BootX Settings file show up as a Boot LinuxPPC document?

Lastly, make sure that the folder is named LinuxPPC and is at the root level of your startup disk.

Also, after I logout of Linux, I get a smiley face on reboot, but no boot sequence. I booted from CD, reset the startup disk in the control panel, and rebooted. Mac OS came up no problem.

  15. Apple never did anything on Seattle Weekly article on future demise of Microsoft · · Score: 1

While I would agree that Apple dropped the ball for a while, the fact that the Mac interface has remained consistent is a testament to its remarkable design. Kind of like the Constitution. It has even remained consistent across an entire platform change when they went from 68k to PPC.

As for technology, how about Quicktime, Firewire, the 3.5" floppy, open doc etc. etc.
