PLUS: This proves that there ARE people out there interested in breaking into Linux boxes. It's just that this is the best way they can find to do it and I think that says a lot. So let's not hear any more of this "Linux would have trojanes too if it were as popular as Windows" bull. Between this and the MySQL on Windows worm:

I changed a word for you and made it TRUE. If the average moron would move to linux, people would still get their machines rooted because of the new porn downloader they managed to install and give root access. It's very difficult to remotely root an up to date windows machine with just Remote Desktop running on it. Just as safe as Linux with SSH.

I'm sorry but that's nonsense. Update stage servers, test, and then patch production servers. I have had no problems the last 5 years with this method. And a reboot doesn't mean service-downtime. If it does for you, you're doing it wrong.

That's because you don't want a server to just gloss over and ignore the fact your RAID array is fucked and data is being sent to oblivion and that sort of thing.

It doesn't take a long time just for the sake of taking a long time, it takes a long time to make sure everything is correct as it should be.

How often do you reboot your servers anyway? It shouldn't be more than a few times a year at most.

Patch tuesday. : So a few reboots a year = b.S Also i compile new linux kernel i cron && reboot.

. I'm personally a fan of perimeterless networking, where each machine is expected to handle its own firewall. Done right, it can make administration easier, give better security, and keeps laptops safe no matter where they're connected.

If you want to allow, say, VLAN 100 to access VLAN 105 on specified ports that would be difficult to do on a computer level since you could only filter on ip-range / ports. And that would be rather insecure unless you're using ipsec. Also you will have management overhead when there's a security bug in the firewall software. But I too like having firewalls on servers and computers. But rules for outgoing connections and between vlans is managed centrally. It's a good additional layer if you can manage it, but don't use it as the only layer.
