    In our data center we've moved a lot of the Windows workloads to virtual servers. That gives you "the console" and "the hardware" even when you're remote, so it's very nice.

    IP KVM called. They want to know what year it is!

    It's not like the routers have to handle the decryption. I mean. Home routers? What do home-users got that's so freaking important that a hacker want to store their data over n-years. Client With VPN Certificates-> Logon to Wireless with WPA2 or whatever-> only allowed to connect to VPN server running somewhere -> PROFIT
    Sometimes you just gotta say, good enough. Or another solution would be do isolate your walls with tinfoil. That way no-one can listen!

    That's why if you have really important information going through the wireless. You either A) Use a VPN tunnel or B) Don't use wireless.

    It just means that DNA is no longer quite so useful in proving that a person is guilty. It is still perfectly useful in the much more important task of proving not guilty.

    Huh? The principle is that you ONLY have to prove someone guilty. They're supposed to be innocent by default.

    Parent is not a troll. Local Exploit still means a bug in firefox can leave your box totally "PWND!" A local exploit is more dangerous for a desktop computer than a server. but is still a very real concern.

    FAIL! Local explot has nothing to do with PHYSICAL localization. It just means that the hacker needs to run his code on computer as a local user. all the hacker need is an exploit in some software you're using. i.e firefox, flash etc and make you visit their exploit. By hacking your favorite porn site f.ex.

    What are you talking about? What good would asterisking the username do? It would result in a longer unkown string, but you should use strong passwords anyway so it shouldn't provide any extra security.

    Wrong. There have been known cases of where you just visit a webpage and a javascript tries to hijack your router using standard passwords.

    What's so hard to believe? Making it easier to run linux under hyper-v is in Microsofts best interest. If the components needed is integrated in vanilla linux kernel that's great! I hope vmware and citrix can do something similar. I don't really want to be bothered with vm-tools when i'm using a CLI only install. Maybe i've misunderstood but whatever.

    One addendum to the Gentoo thing...

    If you're running a "real shop", in other words many boxes that you want to keep in sync, dedicate one or a few as "binhost servers". Compile there, and the rest of the machines just fetch binaries.

    Only problem is that it defuses the usual "waiting to compile" Gentoo jokes.

    Also you have no excuse to slack off because "you're compiling". But yeah. That's what i do. Hardened gentoo. Local Rsync, BINHOST and DistCC. Compiling time is a none-issue. :) Oh and remember to add glsa-check to your cron and mail when something important comes up. :) I also have a "staging" server with all the services installed. Just to see that all is working before distributing everything to the other servers.
