Not saying we should be like China, just maybe we wouldn't have these problems if "Get all the uneducated to vote for me" wasn't a winning strategy.

The OKC bombing? They started regulating the fertilizer and other materials used for the bombing.

9/11, they locked the cockpit doors and did a ton of other stuff.

Nice attack: they started regulating heavy trucks more and put up barriers

It sounds like it serves as a remote control for the TV right in front of you and also a bunch of stuff you should be able to use your phone for.

Wiki page: Devices that can be controlled with Harmony include TV's, cable boxes, game consoles, smart lights, smart thermostats, smart locks and other connected devices with Wi-Fi

I guess it can turn a dumb TV into something you can control with your phone, though there are cheaper options
Why would you control your game consoles through something like this? Just seems like it would add latency and an extra step to fail.
Is there a smart thermostat or lock you can't control from your phone without this thing?

None of that seems like it needs an internet connection.

The surgeries were done at those times you mention. The skin healing and coming to an equilibrium would take months after that. To confirm it was growing as normal would take more months after that. Tests on samples collected after several months would themselves take months after that. Writing the paper would take months after that. Review would take at least one month. And that brings us up to the present day. Doing the surgery and saying "Well we healed him permanently" the next day would be premature.

  8. If it seems that so many people who are in favor of free markets are against the government getting involved in markets its because a business in a free market is able to fail, freeing up the labor it used for other uses

That's a compelling argument, I've never thought about it that way.

    Two points though:
One: Saying "Government doesn't create jobs" is a fucking lie then. The statement should be "government doesn't create jobs that go away," except that would of course make it sound like a good thing.
Two: That's a pretty big generalization that doesn't hold up. Government funded scientist jobs get cut all the time. Many government jobs, including municipal broadband workers don't go away because the need doesn't go away. And government budgets go up and down, leading to people being cut. It's not as ruthlessly efficient at laying people off, sure, but I've yet to see the proof that benefits anyone except for the elites who don't really need much extra.

Many journals are cutting the print editions. It's kind of weird they lasted as long as they did. Many resources aren't available in the print version anyway. Online supplementary figures are very common, movies and programs are obviously not printable, and some journals are even putting additional text in "Supplementary" sections. Which makes no sense whatsoever in the online-only versions.

Also, you're assuming libraries have full access, which is nonsense. Why would journals give all access to public libraries?

Anyway, our tax dollars pay for the research. Researchers like those that access most of the journal articles volunteer time both in writing and in reviewing the research papers. Why the fuck shouldn't researchers be able to access the papers? The internet has made most of the useful functions of for-profit science journals obsolete, they're almost entirely parasitic now. There's no function they serve that outweighs researchers being able to access papers at our convenience.
