Thirdly, the electoral college is the law of the land. We simply cannot violate it based on whim.
A "law" is simply a rule made by a small group of humans at one point (and hopefully it represents the view of the vast majority of those whom it affects) - but any law can be changed, and many are. Sometimes its even changed to reflect that majority of opinion.
Our company is on Flex time with mandatory core hours from 9-3. This basically means you must be in the plant between 9am & 3pm...
*) Don't have to be stressed over making it in at a given time. You don't have to cuss over traffic being bad & showing up at 9:10, while your boss is bitching that you showed up late
*) Reduced micro-management. Managers don't have to stand around and see when you come in & go just to make sure that you show up by 9am...
Why not? You just said you had to be there at 9, so if you'r in at 9:10 you were late?
Ehm yes...thank you, that made it even more clear to me that the Electoral College system is totally unfair, I would even go as far as saying that it's NOT democratic at all. People should choose the president, not states.
That's right, it's not democratic. It's not supposed to be. We are not a democracy, we are a "republic".
It's certainly not democratic that the electors can vote for anybody they choose regardless of how the people voted (as they can in america), however that "republic" should somehow equate nodemocracy is utter rubbish.
It has absolutely nothing to do with voting. A republic denotes a government which has a chief of state who is not a monarch(which would make it a Kingdom) and who in modern times is usually a president. (Merriam Webster defines it as a political unit that has a democratic government )
The rational behind the EC was to have the states elect the president, with the states using the popular vote to decide how they voted.
Indeed, the upper class didn't trust rabble, so they designed a system where they could safely ignore them - is it any wonder the US has the lowest voting attendance in the so called free world...
This also prevented the "mob rule" problems inherent in true democratic governments.
One of those "problems" would be that a tiny minority of goverment has the majority of the country against them. Of course most countries have more than just two parties, which tend to keep things in balances. But given the nature of the american entertainment industry I suppose it's a good thing that the "mob" can be summarily ruled out.

Interesting, does that mean the majority of Slashdot readers are from the rest of the world?? Why do you reject most of the non US stories then Slashdot ?:)
Where if you have IPX and TCP/IP on your system, the game will see "itself" on BOTH networks... it's a bug which has been around ever since Quake1 (thence a crash bug), and in every game that has license the engine.... you would think they would get around to fixing it...
But "arrogant crap"?! I feel fairly well qualified to talk about what clients want from a website.
As I said, I go by the general tone of feedback that i've gotten. Don't get me wrong, I think a page should be accesible to as many people as possible, not just the ones who have the latest version of MSIE - BUT i don't get the feel from people who design web pages (not here in europe anyway, it's possible that it's different in the states) - the general attitude is: Get Explorer it's cheap, and you'r a jerk if you don't.
And they seem to be able to get away with it.
BUT...I have never found a site that I can only view with IE.
You don't get around much do you?
Please point me to one. I'm sure they exist, but they're obviously not any sites that I ever use.
Sorry, I've given up - I don't use netscape anymore and i don't keep a list of old grievances..
In fact any web agency worth their salt will at least make sure a site downgrades elegantly into NS.
That's just so much arrogant crap! It doesn't work that way! I've written a few mails in my time about webdesign, and the reply is always something long these lines (in intent if not in words): "sorry but almost nobody uses netscape anymore, it is outdated crap. We are offering you a service here. If you don't like it feel free to go somewhere else"
We can't rewrite everything just because a new technology comes along. As we get more systems, the problem of finding time for rewrites increases. If it works, don't fix it. Vinge's concept of software 'archeology' seems very real even now.
After all, why is the architecture of many modern computers related to a design fubar by Intel many years ago? Why do even some of the most modern chips like the Crusoe end up working with translated x86 code?
Because you are in a capitalist system - nothing halts the progress of computers more than that system. If we could throw it all away and were just given new computers at each turn, not only would we be much further ahead than we are now, you wouldn't have all that legacy crap
Not to mention the fact that there was a german topart series about 15-20 years ago about the same idea, the main difference was that the was humans who were running a very advanced simulation on the computer. So advanced that those in the program had become sentient, and when one person starts to suspect the truth he is the hunted one.
Good comeback to what was obviously just a flamebait fool

Well, it was so hopelessly not funny, that we thought perhaps you didn't know...

I wonder if a pentachromat designer could come up with an outwit that the rest of us couldn't see :)

After all, you are her little honeypie,eh? :)

You are not allowed to run an NNTP server?

Felons can't vote in the US?

It was the majority of those who voted.

Guess I'm not an artist then - I find adobe's GUI is very bad, small and squeezed together

What's an elephant?

Marginally of topic perhaps, but does anyone know how to get perl running for IIS ?

In Quake1, if you picked the "wrong" one the game would crash.
Yes it's a damn bug, and i hope they will fix it!

And why the hell did you consider it redundant?! Idiot.

Pardon my linguistic query, but "carding" ???

Because it's bad reporting not to mention it upfront.

Yeah, but the story is a bit boring - more content less style please
