Well now... I can see that movement is going to gain momentum again. Why bother converting food into calories when you can live off of light and only eat "occasionally" when you "want to experience the taste". Living on Light - formerly Pranic Nourishment
I wonder how well these laptops with handle right on the hinge are going to hold up since you'll likely be putting a bit more strain on that joint.
My first personal laptop just broke the other night. The plastic that encase the hinge had been cracking for a while and three nights ago it just cracked completely.
Some laptops that we had at my previous job exhibit similar signs of wear too - and these are not cheapo laptops either. That's one reason why I am not going to spend any more of my money on laptops - I'd rather let work pay for it:)
Roston says information transmitted over the Internet currently goes through a relatively "narrow pipe." Because McGill has access to a high-speed research Internet available to relatively few organizations, the University's researchers can experiment with the possibilities available with "a huge, wide pipe."
So, are you saying that they "made history" because they could transmit video/audio in real time because they have a huge, wide pipe?
Why can't you hook the audio card up to a generic system and have it do its job unobtrusively, while you put the cube on your desk and use it to manipulate the resultant data? I mean, what you're doing is basically sucking data to disk right? This ought to be more or less the same as FTP'ing a huge file to a remote file server somewhere --- you don't need to be sitting in front of the file server when this is taking place. Why can't you do the same with this Layla card? Don't they have a software that'll control the card in client-server fashion? Do they need to have one written?
Am I missing something? If you hold down the back button on Netscape long enough, you get a popup menu that allows you to "pop the stack" to any page you've viewed so far. This only works with recent Netscape, of course.
I would like to know how they plan to remotely reboot any computer they put up in orbit. We all know any computer is going to crash every now and then and it'd be interesting how they plan to do this on the Macintosh platform.
I became interested in computer when I found this program in BASIC that would animate a smoking cigarette (heh, kids and cigarettes... ah well). I thought it was pretty cool, so I started studying it. BASIC is simple enough to understand without actually having a computer (I couldn't afford one at the time, since computers were still quite expensive in 1982-1983). Your kids might enjoy getting the immediate feedback that most interpreted languages offer. This includes BASIC, Smalltalk-80, LOGO, among others. LOGO might be a good start - the "turtle" probably would give them hours of fun. I know I had fun with it:)

You know... this would be absolutely *perfect* for that. Too bad it'd gross most people out, though =:) And I picked the wrong time to eat lunch today. Lesson learned --- Thou shalt not eat thy lunch while reading slashdot.
I've always wanted to do that with this keyboard. I've gotten tired of carrying laptops around with me. It would be nifty if I could hook this up to the Spresso PC and use Sony Glasstron/PC for video output. This would be a very expensive option, of course, but would be very lightweight and can withstand more punishment without investing in ruggedized laptops.
Do you believe that all people have innate ability to be funny? Some people live their lives under incredible hardship and still manage to be decent human beings. Do you think humour is capable of shaping culture, life, universe, and everything?
If the response written by John Rohner to this article is real, I would like to hear Netpliance's side of the story. It doesn't paint a pretty picture of the company.
Here are some quotes from that response: Once production was set, via a Taiwanese company, and I had put 8 man months work, in 3.5 calendar, into it. I was called in on a Sunday afternoon, I was down with a flu so was home for the first time in months, handed a paycheck to the previous Friday and told I "didn't meet Company expectations".
Two weeks later I copyrighted, applied for patent and published my "Wireless Hub and pad" and Netpliance Threatened to sue unless I "turn over all rights to them" and unless "I provide, FREE, my time to ensure they are "given this patent".
Usually people would be up in arms about Big Companies (tm) hurting Little People (tm) right about now and would be setting up all sorts of boycott web sites. Has anybody done this to Mattel yet?
I have had it with closed-source, proprietary operating systems. I will not waste my time with proprietary platforms that this Amiga is going to use.
It's interesting to note that IBM intends to leverage Linux to gain the leads they lost to Sun and Microsoft, yet this little company (Amiga) think they can leverage Tao to gain the leads they lost to: IBM, Sun, Microsoft, Apple, just about everybody and their pet turtles when they went into hybernation ten years ago.
if it means it can help me with porting Linux/X to those CE devices. Currently those CE devices do not attract me *at all* due to the fact that they run "wince". Then there's the Samsung unit:)
Actually, let's hope they don't. In the real world, companies like Blizzard pay artists, musicians, coders, etc. "money" to write the games, which they then sell in an effort to cover costs and make a "profit".
What are you talking about? Where did I suggest that Blizzard give away this port for free? I am perfectly willing to pay for games.
Were you just trolling for reaction or did you actually have something to say?
I sent Blizzard email a few months ago asking whether they would consider a port to Linux. Unfortunately, I got a rather canned response. Let's just hope that they wake up to another source of revenue.
I will make some exceptions for rebooting my machines to play games. Quake3Arena is one of them, considering that I get much better framerates on my Voodoo3 (yeah, yeah, so I don't have a TNT2/GeForce)... but, for games like Diablo where you can't really truly machine-gun those monsters (would be fun to try), I really see no point to rebooting to Windows just to play it. </soapbox>
has no picture of nude people or animals, but it's the closest I could come to finding "chocolate chip cookies" near anything erotic... (if you could call *this* erotic)
Have you ever been to the location where the film was shot? If so, you would have realized that the producers did a fairly good job of restoring the place back to what it was like before. Other islands in the surrounding region had suffered much more from popular tourism. Part of the problem is the general lack of self control. Admittedly, Phuket is much cleaner than other tourist spots, but wherever you have massive amounts of people coming and going, the environment is going to be impacted - like it or not. This situation won't get better until the Thai's (I am Thai myself) learn to respect the environment.
Part of the film was shot in Phuket - about 2 hours (flight time) away from Bangkok. If you want to have a peaceful vacation, this would be a good and affordable place to visit, especially considering the currently favourable exchange rate.
Someone please explain to me how UCITA is going to impact users of open-source software? The GPL is very benign license. What harm could possibly come to the open-source world?
This board uses six layers, with plated through-holes, and surface-mount parts. Not very many hobbyists can afford to build small quantities of anything this complex.
It's good of Compaq to make this information available, but it would have been of far more use if they had made available a kit for this unit.
I would be quite happy to purchase one or two units knowing full well that it is an experimental concept machine, and that I cannot get any official support from Compaq, etc. At least I would have something that's *working* as opposed to a bunch of black ink on paper =:)
I don't know what your angle is, but my motive for making MP3 is *not* to pirate music. It's simple - convenience.
I have hundreds of CD's and god knows how many songs. The problem is that on any particular CD, there may be only one or two songs I really like. I rip those to MP3 and store them on my hard drive so that I can queue them up appropriately. I can't easily do this with conventional CDROM jukeboxes (the UI on those jukeboxes are horrid).
I hope you don't continue to equate MP3-making with piracy.

Well, in *that* case, would you be required to take off your swimming trunks if it had DeCSS printed on it? =:)

it gets worse when your subnet is named "dot" or "slash" like http://slash.dot.slashdot.dot

Cheap! Slightly used Sun Ultra Enterprise 10000 for sale. Like-new condition. Every home network needs one of these.
