--It is time for "technologists" to cut it out and stop trying to scare the Hell out of everyone with this MS is evil and the internet is falling shit.
--Bottom line if MS was as bad as WE all think it is it WOULD disappear. Truth is it isn't that horrible. For 90 minutes at a time it's a great gaming platform.
I purposely bought the Dell that they use(d) for Linux. Then I whacked the drive put W2K on one half and RH6.2 on the other.
Recently I called them and asked them to fix the problem I was having wherein the B-Memory chip slot would occasionally "drop" the memory chip out.
They sent a guy who had just completed his A+ Cert... Hey it's just a motherboard I thought. He never hooked the fan up. He fried the chip and the "new" board.
Dell sent more parts. And the same guy. I sent him home. I requested a veteran to do the replacement. New guy comes. Installs everything. Boots the machine. This guy FREAKS out and tells me, "What you're doing is against the law. I should report you. You CANNOT install another OS on a Dell."
I gently inform him that Dell ships laptops with Red Hat.
An hour later I get a call from the repair place (IBM) who also inform me that since I have voided the warranty I am now liable for the repair costs and they'll send me a bill.
I called Dell back and they fixed everything, but still... ---
I was at a BOSE show when i was selling electronics in college and the guy I went with and I both hated BOSE speakers b/c they didn't have any bass (ie when we played Jane's Addiction our genitals didn't itch.)
At the show the BOSE 901s were literally pounding with bass, almost too much bass. Then I noticed that the curtain they were in front of was moving. When the BOSE rep was done we walked up to the curtain and pulled it back... 8 Cerwin Vega (8!) subs were sitting on the floor POINTING at the crowd.
CIO: "So what do you do?"
ME: "I play a lot of games."
CIO: "Ever make a UT Server behind a firewall?"
ME: "Yeah."
CIO: "Windows or Linux?"
ME: "Both."
CIO: "Go to HR and get a badge."

I have a Communications Degree (read Journalism) and an English Degree (read I can read) but I ended up a SysAdmin/IT Manager for the money!
Clearly the real money is in Journalism! This guy dumped a ton of cash on a TV (In the end it is just a TV) so he must be doing much better than me! ---
The hardware industry exists in its current form thank wholly to games. The truth of the matter is no one was ever going to need a 64MB video card running Lotus 123.
There is a current movement toward digital video/editing, made feasible by "cheap" high end hardware ---
Games have pushed this industry in every way shape and form. Next to pr0n there is nothing more important than games and in terms of hardware there is NOTHING more important.
Yes there need to be better apps but games are where it is at.
Yes the Amiga struggled without a Word, Excel but it was killed by very poor decisons throughout it's history, not by the lack of Word.
Linux MUST get games and especially network games like UT, NASCAR 4, Half-Life, Combat Sims etc, etc.... ---
--The situation is clear: Any OS will teach computer skills; typing, word processing, web based research, email, programming.
--But your average teacher may be deficient in computer skills or "married" to Windows b/c that is all they've ever used (this happens with Macphiles as well.) Subsequently you can not drop *nix boxen in the classroom and expect them to be used.
--"Login?" "Why doesn't escape work?" "This isn't like the on we have at home." "Where's Start?" "I use Internet Explorer." "chown?" "su root?" "Where's the Recycle Bin?" "Network Neighbohood?" "mount - t smbfs -o...?"
--Teachers NEED to feel comfortable. Chances are they are at a disadvantage anyway. A seventh Grade student may already be a l337 h4x0r or at least know enough networking to set up a UT server behind their backs. Teachers probably won't be comfortable using some free *nix box they've never touched before. And let's face it you average Education Major is not going to be real comfortble at University hanging around all the l337 CS students trying to take Linux 101.
--SO the problm starts in the board meeting where the school decides what OS to get... "Well the Dell's COME WITH Windows ME." Sold. ---
Since Cable Companies have gotten into the "internet thing" their model of business might be one to look at.
Sign up for basic cable and get 2-13 (sorry to those of you out of the States) and that's it. Sign up for Basic Cable Plus and get MTV, ESPN, some crappy Movie Channel. And so on and so on up the ladder until you have full blown every channel ever TV.
Why not do something similar with internet access? Sign up for basic NET and get access to e mail and any sites that deem themselves free. This would include private pages, free parts of pay pages and such. Sign up for Basic NET plus and you get more, Wall Street Journal, Discovery, TV Guide, etcetera. Then you could even sign up for Basic NET Porn and get all the porn channels.
The Internet has/is becoming what we all feared it would become. TV. Might as well price it as such.
Oh what about FTP, Telnet, News, etc. Yearly subscriptions. ---
--What is to stop a Rental Company from feeding this information to the local authorities (local to the location of the car!) and getting a kickback on the fine?
--Since this is clearly a money making venture for the Rental Car Company why not do it with the blessing of local PDs? Everyone but you win. ---
--As a Sys Admin I have a sort of love/hate relationship with passwords. My users are required to remember no less than 3. (NW, Notes, Sabre.) Some of the savvier have managed to use the same password everywhere. Recently an edict was passed down from the PHBs to make everyone's password the same. Mostly so the PHBs could access anything. I showed them the error of this thought process.
--"Then they can get eachother's stuff and yours!"
--"But, they're not me, how could they get in?"
--"If I have the keys to your house I could get in to it."
--"Oh. But they'd have to sit at my desk!"
--"Not really." (Of course I could restrict where users can log in from but they don't need to know that!)
--But honestly I feel for these people. I have a ton of passwords too. Some are hard some are easy some I don't know thanks to cookies. The point being ther ARE far too many passwords.
--I have been trying to envision a swipe card system wherein all a user's passwords are stored yadda yadda. Clearly theft of this would be bad, but so is losing your work ID swipe card. Perhaps this is coupled to a typed password for the card. (Which my users would write onto the card with a Sharpie.)
--Of course the promise of fingerprint recognition (lop off the finger trick?) and retinal scans would make this idea obsolete in several years but something has to be attempted to lessen the password load. ---
--News Flash Y2K was a hoax.
--News Flash The internet is not going to be "shut down" by any stupid virus.

--That's right folks, you grew up watching Urto Suki Doji now you can live it!
--We can't promise you multiple prehensile penises but we can, for a limited time, off you:
VULVA CAM! (..cam....cam...)
--That's right VULVA CAM! You can see it all! Just like multiheaded penises' of The Wandering Kid!
--Act now and get....

The hardware industry exists in its current form thank wholly to games. The truth of the matter is no one was ever going to need a 64MB video card running Lotus 123.
There is a current movement toward digital video/editing, made feasible by "cheap" high end hardware
---
bzzzt! wrong!

Adobe has done all the right things and then some!
I don't think we should all begin cheering wildly for "our" victory, but then I don't think there was much of a fight.

"Well the Dell's COME WITH Windows ME." Sold.

and we end up with Querty...
With triple word score thats a lot of point!

Hey! Go see Post #60 and answer it!

--Great where do I send my $100 to get a year of TPJ and all the back issues?
--No seriously, no one says where I can get mine.
---
Get a fractional T1 since you ARE willing to pay more for your Hight speed bandwidth.
T1s are _supposed_ to be more reliable and you are garuanteed your bandwidth.
Problem solved.

Was it the second or third time they found Mulder's Sister?

My wife and I have a deal. If I have sex with Gillian Anderson it's not cheating.
Sadly Gillian hasn't returned my calls.

--What is to stop a Rental Company from feeding this information to the local authorities (local to the location of the car!) and getting a kickback on the fine?
--Since this is clearly a money making venture for the Rental Car Company why not do it with the blessing of local PDs? Everyone but you win.
