It must be cost effective and convenient enough for the masses to use else it will never go anywhere.
That said, I think the money we spend on our military to protect our oil interests abroad should be funded by oil taxes (lowering other tax). Let the price of oil reflect the true cost to compete on even ground with alternatives. I wonder if anyone has calculated the total true cost of oil.
Nuke power doesn't really bother me, though. I do wonder where we get our nuke fuel.
Exactly! Developers of some obscure language that practically no one uses or has heard of rushes out to make their name known once they hear about Google's Go. Boo hoo, no news here, move along.

but would not allow CBS to view the original video in its entirety.
Not that I agree with the lawyers, but this shouldn't be used against them. They probably get paid big bucks for the conferences and wouldn't want it just given away to the public for free.
I wasn't directing that at you, it was "you [slashdot/ms-hater] guys";) I know, it's easy to assume you are being attacked when someone replies on slashdot, I agree with you regarding truth/ethics.
Now, regarding the laptops... imagine you are a software vendor, and you want your product to perform well for the people writing reviews of it. Are you going to send it out with a fully stocked laptop that will perform excellently, or a mediocre/minimum spec laptop that might expose the usable hardware requirements? That is why I don't necessarily buy the "bribe" argument. Could it be a bribe? Sure, but circumstances exist where I can see it both ways, and I'm not willing to call it a bribe because of that. Besides, that should be an exercise left to the reader to decide.
I maintain that the ethics of reviewing an OS and posting it on a blog... and receiving something in return for it... resides with the blogger. If a blogger doesn't disclose that information, I would question his ethics. I'm not saying that bloggers didn't do this, although I can imagine that *some* wouldn't have (although after this whole craziness, who wouldn't).
This entire 'scandal' is a lie. Let's ding Microsoft when they really deserve it.
Somehow the story of "Is Microsoft trying to sway popular bloggers into writing favorable reviews in return for laptops?" has turned into "Microsoft bribing bloggers with laptops" and now "Microsoft is backpedaling and TELLING bloggers to send the laptops back."
Facts are, they are looking for some cheap marketing, giving away a handful of laptops to some popular bloggers to give a review of Vista with no-strings-attached. The bloggers ethically should disclose the laptop with the review, although some won't, but that's more of a problem with trusting bloggers and not a problem with Microsoft. Microsoft didn't TELL anyone to do anything, they merely asked them not to keep the laptop afterwards because of the absurd "bribing" news.
This is just a case where Microsoft can't win because you guys are too busy trying to ding them because the ends justifies the means, right?
More people are probably running spyware removal programs that also delete advertiser cookies. I guess that's what happens when advertiser get a little too aggressive.
(a) it's ok to kill a murderer, but not ok to kill an unborn baby.
(b) it's ok to kill a unborn baby, but not ok to kill a murderer.
It's interesting that thetan didn't use (b) as an example, since it screams much louder of contrarian views than (a). I shouldn't be surprised, this is the liberal slashdot media, of course.:p
I guess. But when I hear "zipzoomfly" I don't really think of computers. Sounds more like a convenient cover-up. Dang, I said too much, where is my tinfoil hat?
I've used Windows plenty. There is good and bad about every OS. I think the reasons I use are: ease of use, cheap hardware, and lots of software I can use on it (specifically games). Sure you can argue these points for every other OS, but right now I think MS has the balance of these I require for my desktop.
Problem I had with BSD is hardware support.
I also tried out Linux for well over a year on my desktop... and I have to say I was unimpressed (uh oh, bye-bye Karma).
Don't get me wrong, I love Linux, I run it on various servers I have at home that are dedicated to certain tasks. But I think I am too tied to the applications I like to run. The answer people give me is Wine... which is not a good answer. Everytime I need to run something in wine, it requires hours of screwing with to get everything working right (if you are so lucky to actually have it work). After my year and a half with Linux on the desktop, I was happy to go to XP.
Now OSX looks awesome. The only thing that keeps me from doing it is the cost (hardware and all new software) and the fact that there really isn't as much software for it. There are some games I like to play on occassion that do not have version for the Mac. I could just keep 2 machines, but the cost seems too high.
But the purpose of my post wasn't really to compare what OS is better. That's just a religious war.
Let's say Apple ruled the domain. Everyone ran on Apple's hardware, ran OSX, etc. Would everyone start treating them like they treat Microsoft?
I guess where I am going is... is the hatred/.'ers have toward Microsoft truly due to their business practices, or simply because they dominate the market?
There are 1-2 spots on the wheel that don't count as either black or red (depending on if it is a European or American wheel). So you have less than a 50% chance of winning.
And you can't "break a patent" in the comfort of your own home? You are confusing patents with copyrights.
If I want to build something for personal use that someone has a patent on... there isn't a problem with that. Now if I try to sell it without licensing... that is another story.

Yes, but many of those tricks also make it impossible for people to see your site at all. Cookies are disabled on some clients, referrer headers are removed on some proxies who like privacy, not everyone enables javascript, etc.
They don't lie. I'm so sick of everyone pissing and moaning about Gore's infamous "I invented the internet". Why? Because its not a direct quote, he's never said it and not a single republican whose ever quoted it infront of me could come up with proof its a direct quote. I even saw it used on slashdot today... How shameful.
I'm not a fan of Democrats, but the quote is:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system." -- Gore March 9, 1999...and obviously he isn't saying he invented it... just that he had some role in creating it. (Although he makes it sound more than it probably was, IMO).

How about someone write up a mod for The Sims 2 that makes your sims do sexually explicit things? Make it really raunchy just to prove a point.
It'd really screw with the politicians.
