    Nice, I thought Slashdot was all about Opensource?


    Slashcode is open source; I'm using Mozilla and have never had any problems with Slashdot.

    The nice thing, whatever is causing the problem with Firefox will likely be fixed in a very short time. Whereas with IE, you might wait a year, and not even have MS acknowledge the problem existed.

    The mere existence of problems does not demonstrate a failure of open source, it provides an excellent opportunity for open source to prove itself.

    20% of 4 people, so you can lose 80% of one person (or 20% of each person). I guess so long as everyone comes back with a head, torso, and at least 2 limbs, or only one person comes back as a preserved head, you've got it.

    Ever think that sometimes they allow a story to go through in order to generate discussion about it so that we can evaluate it for ourselves?

    I always thought that was the whole point of /. Not that they link to news stories elsewhere, but that they provide a place for people to discuss the articles in depth, and occasionally have a decent debate about some issues. /. is not a news reporting agency, you can find out everything you see on /. a lot faster if you looked elsewhere. /. exists because of the comments.

    And the US has only 4.6% of the world's population.

    That's really not that good of a comparison; we produce a huge chunk of electricity and products compared to the rest of the world, and we also have a lot more than 4.6% of the land.

    I haven't put a lot of though into this, but how will they catch downloaders unless they offer up some bait to begin with? Would doing so preclude them from being able to sue you for taking it? It'd be like a copyright owner handing out copies of a work for free on the street corner, and then suing everyone that takes a copy out of his hand.

    Stores also like it, because just about everything is released on Tuesday. That way they can milk you for everything you're worth on those days.

    It wasn't his fault.

    Considering they tend to come in boxes with bright green or orange stickers all over them that say "DO NOT DISPLAY BEFORE THIS DATE" or "STREET DATE XX/XX," I'd say it is the employees fault for being a complete indiot.

    They ship the product early in order to ensure that it arrives in time. Also, most retail operations only receive a few shipments of product a week; although new releases often are shipped 2nd day via UPS or Fedex.

    I don't believe there is a law that says concession is a finality. I imagine if we find otherwise, Kerry could easily step up and assert his presidency. He conceded for the same reason Al Gore did, out of concern for the well-being of a divided country; and not because he necessarily thought he had truly lost.

    The one statistic that I haven't seen that could help to explain the discrepancy is what groups were represented by what amount by all of those provisional ballots that haven't been counted yet? I suspect it could very easily been young and new voters (and/or minorities), that recently registered and there were some issues with the registration. It's not too much of a stretch.

    Any one have any information on that?

    The US Constitution permits the states to choose their own methods for elections, and many states leave each county to do it on their own.

    Most of Ohio is still using punch card ballots; there were very few districts that used electronic voting machines (although they were around Cleveland, I believe).

    1. Republican Party nominates either someone further to the right than George Bush or they nominate John McCain in 2008.

    2. Democrats nominate Evan Bayh (or other moderate)

    If both parties choose moderate candidates, we'll have a very close race. If one party chooses a moderate candidate, and the other chooses and extreme candidate, the more moderate one will win by an overwhelming margin. Also, the more moderate candidates there are, the better the environment for third party candidates.

    In the case of a electoral tie, the currently sitting House of Representatives picks the President, the Senate picks the Vice President; yuor talk about the Supreme Court doesn't come into play.

    Bush far from has Ohio; there are countless absentee ballots, plus still many votes in heavy Democratic areas not yet counted. Same goes for Florida on the absentees. Don't expect this to be final for at least a week.

    New Hampshire and Nevada look poised to switch to Kerry; if everything else stays the same, that gives us a tie.

    I'm glad I voted in Ohio this year.
