There is a huge userbase that is already sharing large amounts of content on it. This company wants to commercialize the userbase.

I doubt that they will get rid of the illegal content, because that would drive away the userbase they want to sell. So what I think is going to happen is that your TPB experience will remain pretty much the same (you may have to sign into that VPN system) but TPB will use a certain amount of your HD and bandwidth for their own purposes. If you use a small amount of "personal resources" you'll have to pay for the VPN service, if you allocate a lot of "personal resources" you wont have to pay a dime.

Question is: what are the definitions of small and large in the above paragraph.

I think Cringely's point is that it isn't real competition. Cringely is stating that a cold war of sorts exists between the two companies. Google points it's missiles (chrome browser, chrome OS) at MS, while MS points missiles back (Bing).

Cringely is stating that if one company decided to REALLY attack the other, they would start throwing serious resources into the projects (rather than 20 or 30 engineers they'd throw hundreds), and basically eat each others lunch.

Joey Rat is a poor moral programmer. I find myself having to rewrite his code all the time because he fucks up his use-cases. He makes calls down to Lev 18:22 and 20:13 w/o ensuring that he also calls 19:27 or 19:15. His code is really a spagetti mess.
