I was thinking the exact same thing. geez. My only fear is the heat generated by the processor. Could there be a fire hazard of an all wood case? (I'm sure there would be a intel PII or overclocked Celesux, but Im more interested in using it with an AMD K6-2).
Also, what about using plexy? make a clear plastic case?
Anyone have any URLs for how-tos and specs on making an ATX hard wood or other material case?
if not, ill just do it myself. like i almost have a life anywho. not.
no kidding. im getting rather tired of business execs who have their heads up their ass thinking that they can publicize an opinion despite not knowing shit. cummon.
mp3 is here to stay. Linux is here to stay. not cause of the profit to be made but the superior technology and public backing.
its not going to happen. afaik, legislation has been in place for quite a while that require online stores to tax interstate sales, but it requires that the seller voluntarly report the income and pay the taxes.
Also, this is unrealistic in a global market. How is a seller supposed to know where the buyer is? Who is he supposed to pay the sales tax to and whose going to regulate and police it. While the FBI and CIA are crying like babies that 40bit encryption is too hard and that hackers are taking over satellites, the power seems to be in the hands of the people.
Same reason the CDA and CDA II failed. Internet is not a US only network and locations are in IPs, not addresses and zip codes.
Geez. Litin up peeple. Spellin onlee cownts at werk and skewl.
Besides. Its just like the clipper chip and PIII arguements. If you dont like it, dont use it, so in other words, if you dont like Katz, dont read his posts.
There is more to life than computers, rather more to computers than installing software and yapping about hardware. I realize there are a lot of flamers, but shit. if you dont like reading Katz, why the hell did you click the link and post a comment.
It's not a book I would've normally bought, but i found it pretty interesting. TO KATZ: i'de like to know if you kept the cabin or sold it before the books sales took off.
now to the flamerz: dont like it, dont read it. you waste more time relentlssy ripping on this guy.
inventing the internet is a bit much, but if i recall correctly, he was the one who pushed the legislation thru that in essence moved it from strictly arpanet and univeristies to the hands of NFS or whoever that let more people use it and develop into what we know today. Im sorry i dont have details.. its been awhile since i researched this. but i know he had a role.
unless my crack pipe was laced this morning, im pretty sure bus speed refers to the speed that information can flow accross the motherboard to the RAM and whatnot. How the hell could you upgrade that? resolder everything or what? i think you may be mixing up overclocking and bus speed.
side note on the comment above this one, it is important to have a bus speed above the pentium level bus speeds (he mentions that it doesnt matter since the PII requires a different socket so why bother with a dual MB faster than the pentium mmx chips) because what if you decided intel is shit, which it is (in my ever so humble opionon), and get AMD K7s for it.

I've been reading it all today. It came from Amazon last night. So far, i really like it. It's not what i expected, but he's a really good writer and keeps it interesting. I hope you all read it. Not too much about technology, more about introspection and dealing with the complexities that slowly start to weigh down on us in life, about change; a lot about change, and silence. Thats as far as i've got. He's dealing with silence.
If i was to offer any advice to Jon Katz, I'de just tell him to give more details about whats going on; his surroundings, the current situation, etc. Sometimes it just seems to dwell too long on change. Then again, I'm 20, so maybe i need to wait a while to get the point.
Tetris is everywhere. Hell, i had it on my TI-85 for awhile. And its not exactly a hard one to code either. And even if they do have it copyrighted, does anyone care? I mean, who the hell are they going to sue. Its even out there as Java applets. I think this is just another lamer company trieing to twistlasws to make em rich.
I got railroaded out of there after 2 write-ups in one year. One thing that Dean of Students Martha Y. Janners and Asst. Dean Tyrell used against me were postings I had made more than a year previous to mtu.flame. She was telling me that I was an angry student and needed counseling. Totally clueless staff.
I hate that school. Advice to prospective transfer students and seniors in High School: Dont go there. The Library sux hardcore, they blow money on stupid s--- like a whole new building for Fine Arts (at Michigan Tech! while the CS department, Physics Dept, and Math Dept take up 1 floor each on one of the smallest buildings on campus). Its cold snowy and they're transfering to semesters which will screw up all the students currently going there.
So AMDs are less than half the cost and only slightly less powerful at equal Mhz. (not to mention the fact they're smaller and not run as hot. better design, imho).
PIIs are already run hotter than any chip out there. Hell. I'll put money on the fact that in a couple of years, people with PIIs will: 1. have to buy new motherboards to support the PIII or P4. 2. have to junk their system cause the chip is fried out.
okay folks: I could put a rocket engine on a Yugo and it would go faster than any other car out there, but it'd still be a p.o.s.
by the wording of the article, it seems that its off when it ships to your house but will require software to keep it off.
Its a bad idea to begin with. And if they want to keep software to a machine but using Hardware, why not use the ethernet card? that usually doesnt change or perhaps the HD sn#.
Frankly I dont give a flying.. about software using it for dealing with Piracy, i worry about it for abuse by gov agencies and what not. what a great way to keep track of people surfing habits and their life online.
Dont you think if M$ is in bed with intel and internet exploder is a major M$ product that it will freely hand out your machine CPU ID to any web site that wants it, or uses a M$ server product.
and when did M$ become user friendly?
its never been and never will be.
besides.. ive never heard M$ use that phrase before.

prices from Pricewatch's PC proccessor price listings
PIII 500Mhz = $747
PII 450 = $469
PII 400 = $303
AMD K6-2 400Mhz = $139
AMD K6-2 450Mhz (preorder, due out this month) = $279
disregarding the fact that AMD uses super 7 (allowing for cheaper prices at equal speeds to intel brand PII motherboards),
So AMDs are less than half the cost and only slightly less powerful at equal Mhz. (not to mention the fact they're smaller and not run as hot. better design, imho).
i was just going to say that..
how bout also:
The Wiz (which first introduced Super Mario World 3, btw)
War Games
Hackers (chuckle.. well.. this is sorta nerd)
The Net
Hackers and the Net kinda dont count since they're really retarded media protrayels of cyber geeks, but anywho.

long pointless rant i know.
i didnt think intel could suck more.
ahh well. Like i want one of those
energy hoggin overclocked crap a-s chips
with POS technology anyways.
intel's fast. thats it.
put it this way: i could put a Jet engine
on top of a pinto and it'd go real fast, but
it'd still be a piece of sh-t
