Unfortunately all the stations in my area play the same thing over and over and over. Either Clear Channel or Emmis Communications owns them. The ONLY one I get ANY new/unique music one from is a local college. So, in a nutshell, Radio==MTV/VH1 (99.9% of the time). I am looking forward when independant artists form some sort of co-op for streaming music.
Until the telcos get involved, using the phone to connect to the net is still very expensive. My DSL is finally going DOWN due to the telco (SW Bell) lowering the cost of the line BUT the service itself through a 3rd party ISP is staying the same. When AOL/MSN/whoever gets into the phone co business THEN we will see a REAL reduction is price and not just a loss of functionality to allow for a lower price.
Sort of like the purpose behind Iraq Coalition Casuality Count.
Check out thier methodology. It would be nice to have a collection
or reliable sources all together from public (read=verifiable) information.
Why not pay the $521 mil and keep the browser going? If MS can pay it and the competitors cannot then they will become the platform of choice due to functionality.
When I was in college I worked for the computer lab. One day we set out to upgrade all the PCs. What we had to do first was get the old ones out of the way. We backed an unmarked white van up to the computer lab, opened the doors to the lab, and started taking the machines. It was during a school day. Students and faculty were walking by watching us. Occasionally one would even lend a hand (hold a door open a bit more, pick up a dropped mouse, etc... ) No one questioned us. Not even the student worker running the lab. We had not even made conversation with the worker during the entire time. After we loaded up the 20+ PCs and headed out our boss decided to call the lab and 'warn them against people stealing PCs'. The worker freaked! He said he was there when it was happening but since "they looked like they knew what they were doing so I didn't question them." The boss then let him in on the real story.
The key: just look like you know what you are doing.
Ok... my fahther-in-law, a retired Dean had the same experience as a directive from the U president. A friend I have at a major university was asked to perform the same task more or less. These were not small schools and I am not going to name them.
My wife used to work at a University in the Statistics/Retention/etc... or soemthing like that dept. I used to call it the Department of Imaginary Numbers. For example, when she turned the graduation report in to the Dean/board about graduation rates the #1 degree was nursing. Well, they didn't want to be known as a nursing school so they told her to break the nursing graduates down into specialties. She then asked if she should do that for the engineering/math/chemistry departments as well. The told her no, only nursing.
So much for accurate statistics! She left that job after few more reports had to be modified. For fun we called back to admissions to our old school to get the graduation rates. Scary that the same thing was going on there.
It would be interesting to see the colleges lumped together to see where the school focuses for REAL.
Which is exactly what we did. We have a smallish IS shop: 200+ MS/Novell server, 100+ HP midrange servers, and bazillions of PCs. We put our own time server up which ALL of our corporate systems hit. That server then hits a service available via satellite. It is a lot cleaner and 'nicer' to do things in house than rely on some not-for-profit organizations generosity. I even have my PC at home hit my work time server (when I use the VLAN to connect).
to hardcode an address into thier systems? Do you need permission? There was a law a few years ago about 'deep-linking' and even linking... isn't getting the time somewhat the same thing?
Probably falls under the same law that now allows tickets to be generated to the registered owner of a vehicle when that car is given a ticket for going through a red light. The cameras take a photo of the plate - not the driver.
I promise you I am quieter than those slobs with the 5 gallon jug of popcorn and the candy wrappers. Nothing like the krinkle (sp?) of plastic and paper during a movie.
Oh, and the watch does not beep. I like silence too.
But I have the capability on my watch too. Can I wear my watch in the theater? What about 2-way pagers? I agree that folks who talk in movies on cell phones should be hit with a taser... there has to be a better way. hey! What about makinga a movie you won't want to miss any of the action or dialoge?
Though the paragraph is somewhat pessimistic the concept is a good one. Why not try? If it works, great, if not then tweak it till it does. I hope more states try something.
I bought a $800 laptop on the condition that we meet in a public place and I test it out over lunch. The seller lived in my city and we met. He had no problem letting me play with it while we munched. This is the ONLY way I would buy something that expensive. I figure anything else I buy on eBay is money I could afford to lose...
I host photos on my site. I think I will rename to the 10 ten pop tune names and see what happens. Maybe I should patent 'Baiting for the [insert EVIL corp name here]'.
I really, really wish they would stop this piracy crap and put all the money and effort into putting out some good tunes. Too many corporations and people are so short sighted for $$$.
What are you going to do to protect what is left of government lands in CA? Right now Bush is clear cutting and putting roads everywhere. When we visited a few years ago we were told something like less than 3% of the original redwood trees are left. Pollution and over-population are taking and trashing all the free space. I hope you don't plan on selling CA owned property to raise $$$ for government.
Wait till they get imbedded within the threading of your clothing. Nano technology will do wonders for us BUT I fear it was also allow [insert favorit BIG evil entity here] to monitor/influence/etc... us, the consumer.
I started reading this as my CD player started the soundtrack to Men-In-Black. It was weird reading about all the space this and telescope that and having the theme music going.
I ought to patent reading AND listening to music at the same time. Slashdot having theme music? It would be funny to put a recommendation to play while reading a story..
I was just about to say the same thing. The small amount that eventually makes it to the artist is sad. I have been buying my music now from artists and site where most if not all goes to the artist. Every time I read anything Matt had to say I heard in my head "Show me the money!"
I looked at your pricing. Since I have nearly 7GB of just digital photos BESIDES my data it could get quite pricey.

I tried but when I e-mailed the St Louis MO County government they told me to toss them (the regular ones - not rechargable).
Remember, this is the same government that sues the tobacco industry then gives out aid to tobacco farmers...
Since MS did a bid, can we get a list of competing bids as well as criteria? It would be interesting to review...

I love it! Too bad I can't buy it (married w/2 kids). Have a Karma point on me!
