Nice of some anon. coward to question whether or not I've worked in the recording industry? I haven't! Neither have I worked for manufacters of Long bows, Chain maille and broadswords, Telegraph equipment, rotary telephones .......

But they are all obviously obsolete,as are record companies.... One does not have to work in a particular industry to see it's decline.

  5. The artists make very little money from music sale on Would You Pay 5 Cents For a Song? · · Score: 4, Interesting

They get like maybe 1$ per cd. They've always made money from touring. The rule has been the record companies get the money from the sales and the artist gets the money from touring.

Now the greedy record companies want a piece of artists touring money as well. The folks killing music right now are the record labels not the downloaders.

This is a great idea, a band could pay thier own studio costs, put the music directly up for download and then who needs the record companies??
I don't mind right now paying $.88 a song, I do have a problem that very little of that actully goes to the musicans.

People need to face the facts record labels are as relevent in the digital age as say manufacturers of long bows, chain maille armour and broadswords.

The people I'm referring to are of course the folks working at the record label. In this age of oursourceing, downsizing and cost cutting there is no room left for record labels that suck up 90% of the cash from music sales and then complain that they don't get enough.

Well yeah, about 90% of the software patents out there should've never been issued, probably including most of M$'s.

If you could patent things the real world the way they do with software, I could probably patent something like:

'A tissue membrane that takes in an Oxygen/Nitogen mix, filters out the 0xygen and disperses it to complex system of small tubes that bond the oxygen into a plasma compund. The oxygen is then develived via this plama conduit.'

And then sue everyone with functioning lungs, red blood cells and blood vessels.

I'll be 41 in May, I've been a programmer since I graduated from College in '87. I don't know that the college thing matters but if does, there has to be local colleges you can goto. Even if they don't have a CS degree per se, all you want is piece of paper to validate your work. If a smaller local school has no CS degree they will have MIS or Mathematics with an emphasis in Computers, or Mathematics with an emphasis in Statistics (which will involve a bit of programming).

The other thing is keep your skills sharp. I left one co in '99 to get more java experience... Which has paid off. The folks that laughed at me for leaving a cushy job, are now laid off and they have skill sets that not too many are looking for . Powerbuilder and Sybase... some with C programming, not C++ and no clue about oject methodology, RUP and many other things.

If you want to be programmer forever, stay sharp.

In the corporate world everyone seems to have one (at least). Thats the problem with this kinda of generic ip. In hard science you can patent things like a machining process for maufacturing xyz, or a chemical compound, or chemical process.....

In the software world it's not that cut and dried. Hopefully someone will figure out that saying I'm patenting 'a video format that can be played on digital devices' is not going to cut it, and does not give the patent holder the rights to all video formats ever created.

Or not and europe and china will leave us and our lawyers in the dust.

  11. A better Windows than Windows..... on Microsoft Admits Targeting Wine Users · · Score: 5, Interesting

Trying to run windows crap in OS2 is one of things that killed it. IBM spent so much time trying to run windows inside OS2, they completely missed supplying good OS2 native apps.

Wine is good for running old windows apps that you have ( I still Office 7 !!!???? and open office of course), but if anyone spends too much time trying to emulate windows (ala os2) then MS will simply screw you over. As soon as one thing works, they will break it.

If you are using a current MS app either 1) run windows 2) find/create a linux based alternative.

People will scream that yadddadda M$ app is just what they need. Trying to build a 'better windows than windows' is a game no one can win (not even IBM).
