    You can totally have background tasks. It's just that they have to come from Apple.

    That's why it's a deal breaker for some people (like me). Apple's apps don't always suit everyone's needs. There are other apps that are useful that people want to run in the background. Pandora and Last.fm are two examples. I don't even listen to MP3 files anymore since I am a subscriber to both of those music sites.

    I listen to music while checking email, browsing the web, playing card games, and whatnot on a regular basis.

    Listening with which application? Can you listen to music using the Pandora or Last.fm applications while doing other things?

    As a free market libertarian, I think this move sucks, and anyone with half a brain should too.

    I agree. However, those of us with a whole brain, rather than just half, realize that it's a good idea to have a open format that is supported by many vendors.

    I think Impress is good enough to compete with PowerPoint. It's rare to find anyone who really knows what they are doing in PowerPoint. They are usually the "Sally Secretary" types you mention.

    I agree with you 100% about Calc and Excel.

    By far the biggest problem is the exorbitant prices charged for "official" SSL certificates.

    If you register your domain name with gandi.net, they will give you a free SSL certificate.

    Google recently acquired On2

    They have not. They made an offer, but it has not been approved by On2's shareholders. Some shareholders are opposed to it saying that Google's offer is not enough.

    It doesn't work for me. It makes a HTTPS connection but then Firefox says that the connection is not using encryption.

    I switched to Linux 4 months ago, and what I still miss is a file manager as good as Total Commander.

    A Total Commander clone would be a good a start, but I wish there was Directory Opus for for Linux. It actually makes Windows bearable.

    I wasn't blaming the victim and I never mentioned the victim. You put that connection together yourself so you should think about why YOU are blaming the victim. And "irregardless" isn't a word.

    if a data set reveals a person's ZIP code, birthdate and gender, there's an 87 percent chance that the person can be uniquely identified.

    Why are you giving Netflix your birthdate and gender in the first place? I never give those things to companies, and if I can't avoid it (forced to enter something when signing up) I give bogus information. Neither of those are any of Netflix's business.

    I would be ok with the occasional banner ad or something along those lines, but we all know that for every advertiser that attempts to play nicely, a dozen others will come up with some new obnoxious ad.

    This is exactly why I block all ads. If advertisers can all agree on standards for ad width, height, and placement then they can also agree to acceptable behavior for ads (no sounds, flashing, etc). Since they have refused to the the latter, I block all ads because some advertisers cross the line with annoyance. What is the saying in English? One bad apple spoils the barrel.
