You can totally have background tasks. It's just that they have to come from Apple.
That's why it's a deal breaker for some people (like me). Apple's apps don't always suit everyone's needs. There are other apps that are useful that people want to run in the background. Pandora and Last.fm are two examples. I don't even listen to MP3 files anymore since I am a subscriber to both of those music sites.
As a free market libertarian, I think this move sucks, and anyone with half a brain should too.
I agree. However, those of us with a whole brain, rather than just half, realize that it's a good idea to have a open format that is supported by many vendors.
Is there ANYONE here that actually think Calc and Impress measure up to Excel and Powerpoint?
I think Impress is good enough to compete with PowerPoint. It's rare to find anyone who really knows what they are doing in PowerPoint. They are usually the "Sally Secretary" types you mention.
They have not. They made an offer, but it has not been approved by On2's shareholders. Some shareholders are opposed to it saying that Google's offer is not enough.
I strongly disagree. The lack of such stories on this site is evidence of that fact. One or two stores about it doesn't mean that it should be an ongoing subject on Slashdot.
So what? This article isn't about 9/11 and the subject matter is not relevant to the purpose of this site. What's next? Slashdot stories about Britney Spears and "Balloon Boy"?
How is this news appropriate for Slashdot? This has nothing to do with technology or news for nerds. There are plenty of regular news outlets for news like this.
I wasn't blaming the victim and I never mentioned the victim. You put that connection together yourself so you should think about why YOU are blaming the victim. And "irregardless" isn't a word.
if a data set reveals a person's ZIP code, birthdate and gender, there's an 87 percent chance that the person can be uniquely identified.
Why are you giving Netflix your birthdate and gender in the first place? I never give those things to companies, and if I can't avoid it (forced to enter something when signing up) I give bogus information. Neither of those are any of Netflix's business.
I would be ok with the occasional banner ad or something along those lines, but we all know that for every advertiser that attempts to play nicely, a dozen others will come up with some new obnoxious ad.
This is exactly why I block all ads. If advertisers can all agree on standards for ad width, height, and placement then they can also agree to acceptable behavior for ads (no sounds, flashing, etc). Since they have refused to the the latter, I block all ads because some advertisers cross the line with annoyance. What is the saying in English? One bad apple spoils the barrel.
It's not that it would be useful for analysis, but it's useful as documentation of an historical event.
Story at 11.

I agree with you 100% about Calc and Excel.
It's also why Slashdot lacks a secure login and access via IPv6. Slashdot has lost its nerd cred.
Here's the first commercial for it.
I guess they'd undo whatever they did to disable IPv6 in the first place.
I know! What where they thinking by letting people using IPv4 also see that content?
If you register your domain name with gandi.net, they will give you a free SSL certificate.

With new pieces of papar.
It doesn't work for me. It makes a HTTPS connection but then Firefox says that the connection is not using encryption.

A Total Commander clone would be a good a start, but I wish there was Directory Opus for for Linux. It actually makes Windows bearable.
Staying late means poor project management. Time to find a new project manager.
Have you seen a new-born child? I would bet that their body-fat percentage is very high.
...is not a smartphone and so isn't relevant to this discussion.
