You do know that lots of gold is mined in the USA.
In 2012 the United States produced 230 tonnes of gold, making it the third-largest gold-producing nation, behind China and Australia. South Africa (that's actually a country) is 5th, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo isn't even in the top 10.
Most gold is used for jewelry, not electronics, so go protest a freaking jeweler.
There is a distinct possibility that dolphins are not just smart animals, but actually sentient beings. Why can't we communicate with them? We can, just not very effectively. That's understandable, they are more alien to us than the average hollywood extraterrestrial. Just look at the environment they are evolved for, living in water their entire life, relying on sonar, having to return to the air layer on a regular basis. Decidedly not the same as a terrestrial life.
And here's a biggie for you. They've been trying to decipher the dolphin language for a long time. They don't know much about it, but they have found out some very interesting things. Dolphins share knowledge and instructions. They also gossip. Of course, to gossip you need individual names to reference the individual you are talking about. They do. They've clearly tracked unique sound identifiers that are apparently being used with regards to specific individuals, in other words, personal names. When was the last time you heard about pigs sharing instructions verbally or using personal names?
Is it right to eat another sentient being? Most people would say no. It's part of the reason why they wanted to study E.T. and not BBQ him.
Assuming they publicly acknowledge the issue. For several years now they've denied issues with many of their products until they had no other choice. Hopefully they'll do better with this incident.
Actually I haven't seen ANY evidence of negative results from genetically modified organisms that has withstood scientific scrutiny. On the other hand, Global warming has had significant scrutiny, and it still stands with around 100% support with the experts in that field, the climatologists.
After all, if you are asking questions about rocks you consult a geologist, not a dentist. So why are so many people listening to the dentist that disagrees with the worlds climatologists.
I've heard some people say there's a conspiracy. Maybe, but it's not among the scientists. Don't forget that the scientists get nothing from it whether it exists or not, they are dedicated to the scientific principle where the theories must be supported by the evidence, and they often quibble about details and would dearly love to find something to prove everyone else wrong and themselves the founder of a new discovery.
Don't forget that Scientific Journals have to meet certain criteria to be accepted. That criteria is not based on whether or not it makes other scientists happy or sad, but rather that it is properly attributed and backed by evidence. In this case, it also looks like one of the reasons that one got canned was because it was consistently off topic, and with troll articles not backed by evidence. Then there's that whole self-plagiarizing thing. I'm not sure to consider that repeating the same dross while trying to flog it off as new, or doing a bit of circular logic by using yourself as reference for your self is the worst part of this mess, but no matter how you look at it, both are bad and definitely violations of Scientific Journals. So hey, if you can't follow the rules and meet the requirements, you're going to get bounced. Don't like it? Well maybe you shouldn't have tried to scam the system.
That kind of gun stuff is insane. Using threat of harm to induce compliance during a robbery is pretty much a requirement, otherwise it's just a weird form of panhandling. The use of a real gun indicates the willingness to use lethal force in the commission of a crime. The usage of a fake gun or non-existent gun is indication of an unwillingness to use lethal force, though being a robbery, and can only be considered the same by incompetent morons. Of course, we are probably talking about politicians here.
Some places have passed laws specifically banning google glasses, something that is definitely overboard. Since the person in the article was charged with using a monitor, that is obviously not one of those places.
Nobody is arguing about the speeding, though the cops around here like to tack on an extra 10 or 20 mph when they think they can get away with it. It's about being persecuted over outdated and inappropriately applied laws, especially since there is no proof that the device was even in use, just that it existed.
Your phone probably has a camera. If you were on a phone call with your friend, and Alex Baldwin walked up and punched you for taking pictures of him, would it be right? Having the capability to perform an action with a device does not indicate that said action is being performed despite the existence of the device.
You might want to ask yourself that question you posed.
That is something that would be rather easy to develop. I'm pretty sure it could current use navigation software to help. Of course, there's no indication that it was actively doing anything, kind of like the phone in your pocket.
No they aren't. They are trained to read their instruments and indicators, of which these days, some of those are made available through the HUD so they don't have to take their eyes off where their going just to glance at an instrument. Can you say that when you're driving you don't look down at the speedometer to check your speed, despite the fact that it takes your eyes off of where you are going?
No. Boycotts don't work, unless they are well publicized and have a huge following. Chances are you might never seen one that effective in your lifetime.
There are always petitions. Though companies are great at ignoring petitions, especially internet petitions, unless they get a massive number of signatures.
Something that has a higher probability of working. It's a letter writing campaign. Not email, actual snail mail get a stamp dead tree format communication protocol. Yes, have people send them physical letters. It only costs each person one stamp, and each one is worth a thousand emails or petition signatures.
Will that get what you want? I have no idea, but it is a lot more likely to get a response than a minor unexplained dip in sales that probably isn't even noticed.
I ran DD-WRT on my router for many years, and though I didn't track the uptime, the reboots were not often. I left it running for many months, and sometimes over a year. Unfortunately, it eventually died and I had to replace it. I went from a router that supported 802.11 b to 802.11n. (802.11ac had come out when I replaced it, but I didn't have enough money for one of those.)
I'm not dissing OpenWRT, I just haven't tried it yet.
Nye has the advantage of reams of data that will back up sciences statements and conclusions. Science has been working on this for a long time by simply analyzing the world around us. Science doesn't say god doesn't exist, it simply says that there has been no indications of any such divine manipulation.
Ham merely has hearsay in the form of handed down stories from the ancient past by superstitious peoples that had little to no grasp as to how the universe worked and blamed virtually everything good or bad on angels or demons. (Or if you prefer, god and the devil.)
I doubt there will be anything new to the arguments that haven't already been put forth by both sides. The side of science continues to state things that are backed up by data, tests, and predictions. Creationists are backup up by hearsay and belief. Also, creationists often try to muddy the waters by jumping all over any inconsistencies or missing parts of the science. With regards to that, it takes time to find out everything, it's a really freaking huge and complicated universe we live in, but even so, science continues to work. Because of that, the creationists often make claims of sciences failings when the truth is that science has often already solved those supposed fatal flaws, but the creationists are to ignorant to keep up on the progress of the subject over the last decade, or sometimes, several decades.
I know, my punctuation and grammar sucks, that's not the point, but this is slashdot, so I expect at least a half dozen people to obsess on that minutia rather than the subject and statements of the post.:p
Science is based on changing your conclusions to fit the facts, be they supportive or not. Religion is based on believing what you are told despite the lack of supporting facts.
I predict that Nye will score huge points in logic and reason that can not be ignored. I also predict that ham will continue to ignore that and everything else which contradicts his beliefs, even if the freaking pope walks up and slaps him with a live trout while declaring him to be an ignorant boob.
If ham is the one I think he is, he ignores logic and reason and rants on mindlessly when he is up against someone he can't intimidate verbally. Not to mention being totally down with rigging the 'debate'. Of course, I may be confusing him with another high profile creationist, so I guess we'll have to see.
Ok, I won't, I obviously can't get tickets, but if Nye is allowed to speak, I'm sure he'll rip ham several new holes.
This will increase piracy of those shows by a huge margin. This has been done before, and piracy rates tripled. The viewers don't want to have to wait a week for something that has already aired. As a dick move to increase the number of paying subscribers, I doubt it will have much effect. I'd bet it'll be less than 1%.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what the end results are.
Really? Guess you don't travel across borders very often. It happens on a regular basis. Also, there are lots of incidents of 'confiscations and destruction of confiscated goods' that are the agents taking a liking to something, and then taking it home. It happens, I've seen it happen, and I've even talked to a retired agent that told me a bunch of stories of this exact kind of theft and lies. Whatever agency was involved will even go along with the whole official excuse just to try and pretend they did nothing wrong so they don't have to make an apology and reimbursement. Of course, that makes the situation worse on a legal standing with much greater possible repercussions, but it's a bitch to sue them and get a criminal investigation into it.
IMO, the musician should sue them for the instruments, and the loss of income since he's definitely not going to be able to participate in at least 2 concerts. After all, it's not like he can just go down to the pawn shop and pick up that exact type of rare hand carved flute. And no, the metal ones or different types will not sound/play the same, just ask a musician trained in wind instruments. (It's kind of like if your Cellist loses their cello, it's not like a bass guitar is a comparable substitute. I know, those are string instruments, but the idea is the same.)
It's not tech news, it's techie news. So it's all about tech and everything that interests techies, and out of control security & customs is right up that alley. After all, if they start stealing/destroying flutes because they can't tell the difference between a musical instrument and contraband fruit, how long do you think it will be before they use that excuse to steal your computer/tablet in it's leather case because it's obviously a contraband animal being smuggled in?
And in case you forgot Slashdots tag line, it's "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters" Think about it.
By that kind of loose definition, you're clothes (cotton, wool, silk, etc) are 'agricultural products', unless of course you're wearing all 100% polyester or other synthetics. Of course, that also means they can now confiscate your leather briefcase, and so many other items they've been wanting to steal for ages. I'm sorry, did I say steal? I meant to say confiscate and 'destroy'. (I know they aren't supposed to do things like that, but it actually happens a lot.)
Looks like one country is already going to get a license to ignore ip restrictions on USA stuff. Haven't heard any news on that for about a month, so I don't know it's current status.
Nobody deserves that. Besides, if you want to condemn and punish an entire country, especially since politics are constantly changing, there are two things you seem to have forgotten.
First, all the good the USA does. Whether you like it or not, they are a major contributor of relief to other countries when they are victims of disasters, and even pays 22% of the UNs funding. Don't forget that the US is also both a major consumer of goods from other countries, but supplies a huge amount of the worlds food. You cause a country to undergo a serious issue like a "complete dollar collapse", and you can kiss all that and more goodbye. Whether you like it or not, you'll lose the good that the USA does and hurt almost everyone.
Second, stop calling the kettle black. Sure, the USA is one of the big dogs, and everyone likes complaining about the big dog, but come one, virtually everything the USA has done, has been done by all the rest. Many of them do all of them, but there are a very few exceptions that do only some of them. The only difference is that it's come out in the news so people are complaining about it. Heck, even countries that yelled at the USA for spying on their ambassadors admitted a week or so later that they spied on everyone elses ambassadors as well.
The USA is supposed to be a world leader in freedom and 'democracy' and generally play the good child. In that, it's rather fallen in the mud lately, and has been acting like most of the rest of the unruly brats running around this neighborhood called Earth. That's too bad, but if you really think they are horrible and need to be punished with having limbs amputated or locked in the cellar for acting like the rest of them instead of being given a stern talking to and perhaps made to stand in the corner for a while, then you really need to have a hard look at yourself in the mirror and figure out that what you are doing wrong. (If one child pees the bed, are you going to cancel the family vacation just to punish the one?)
Christian Jackboot, Canadian Cork boots, Elvis's Blue Suede Shoes, etc, it doesn't really matter what footwear an oppressor wears, it's where he puts it.
Besides that, it's not a chance that 'mass surveillance' will be misused by the government, it's only a matter of when. If it can be misused for the purposes of furthering political power, it will be, it's always been as simple as that.

Has anybody even read the article where it points out the parts failing are apparently AMD RADEON gpus?
Sure, every company has had screwups, and this time it's AMD and Apple. So why are you so intent on talking about Nvidia?

It's not the Puppeteer Homefleet, they aren't flying in formation.

No.

With 13 flute like instruments that I'm sure were properly padded and protected, there's no way in hell it qualify for carry-on.
