Thats correct. The apps your computer runs are only root-writeable, right? Oh, they're NOT? DOS 7.0 is so 90s...
The headline and summary are bogus - malicious code has no more privilege than you do. If you, as nonroot, can hose up your system either maliciously or not, then you have far greater problems than some trickery in an obscure file container format.
What you just described is a virus, and in fact, has existed nearly as long as computers have. If you don't trust your flac-giving buddy, why take anything he gives you at all? The point is that "flac" cannot compromise your system, only your data. Unless you play the file as root.
Unless/Until MS breaks older stuff, I don't need it. I use XP to run Office, my NMS apps, PUTTY, and Firefox/IE. It runs fine, I don't need more.
If I make $XX per hour, and I have to spend N hours to fiddle Vista into working properly, deal with its learning curve, etc, its just wasted time. Where's the killer app ?
How much time and energy does it take to "save" 90 dollars? Maybe being cognizant of power consumption on new purchases is handy, but spending a weekend dicking around with stuff is a waste of money.
I hear they have excellent articles on Area 51, Elvis' secret alien baby files, and the Jim Morrison's current address. Not to sound cynical, but what prevents the Bad Guys from using this to subtly (or not so subtly) influence what people think the "real" deal is ?
Since MS probably spends $5/min on snacks for its employees, there's no real negative impact. And its good PR: Look how well they comply with laws, look how fair they're playing.
Dude... the total energy consumption remains constant. Think about it. For the capacitors to run the monitor that long, they MUST HAVE DRAWN THE POWER IN THE FIRST PLACE.
It actually requires more power to render black, since you're forcing the LCD elements to remain opaque in front of the backlight, which emits constant power.
Maybe we could have a ruggedized plastic case, which contains a RAM image and interface circuitry, which you could plug into the computer - pick 1 for email, another for web, another for a game, etc.
Then, to keep the cost of the 'computer' part down, you come up with a simplified input mechanism, and connect it to a TV instead of a monitor. Perhaps when you turn the TV to channel 3 or 4.

How often does root listen to audio, esp. considering the new and improved root-like access Ubuntu and Fedora have set up?
Oh, you mean that a USER could compromise THEIR PERSONAL FILES... well, that does suck, but you have backups, right?
DIAF, Statist.
The slow and weak get culled by predators. The clever and adaptable thrive in the face of adversity. What part of Darwinism don't you understand?
Nothing to see here, please move along.
Technological Darwinism in action.

Any word on the Debian port ?
Nowadays they're more like penis warmers than anything else. Keep that heat and RF away from your 'nads, dude!

Of course, if they're trying to throw the Chinese off, they'll say that.

You must be new here.

Then it just draws EXTRA power while running, to charge the capacitors. Electricity can't be produced from nothing.
A more useful version would be one that used solar cells on the top of the LCD to absorb the already expended energy of ambient lighting.
I have a firewall appliance, and run Linux. I send emails, read Slashdot, and a few hobby phpBB forums. How is this relevant to me?
Isn't it wonderful that we got China into the WTO in the 90s, so we could buy all their cheap goods?

Amazing !!
For $89 new, you can get a Linksys NSLU2, and run Debian Etch on it. 266 MHz ARM goodness, 10/100, 2 USB 2.0 ports. Talk about low power, low noise.
You've never heard of MythTV, with a UID of 12292 ?
Aren't you the guy who was trying to copy a 17 MB file from 1 folder to another, while running NT 4 ?
Can you add a tuner card and something with TV-out? This seems like a great MythTV machine.
The ruling now creates a precedent that this is not shocking behavior, and thus it is accepted.
How does ANYTHING become an 'acceptable' practice, without someone trying it and being observed by others? Remember when being gay was shocking?
