    first, according to cnet they are comparing a $339 part to a $364 part.

    second, why make such a big deal to have all those charts and numbers that show how much faster the xp is, if they dont even use the fastest intel? why not run it against a celeron?

    interesting that they measure the fastest amd vs the 2nd fastest intel.

    although, through extrapolation the amd would still be faster in most tests, i'm sure.

    I read the article in Sci.Am. 3 years ago. The thing didn't even work if it was plugged into another computer. Future work was to evolve more robust behavior.

    Dude, do you think cooling systems magically make heat disappear? They move the heat somewhere else. If your buddy had 20 of his machines running in on room, with the proc @ 20c, how warm do you think his room would get?

    IIRC G.723 is ~ 8kpbs
    And if you have a sufficiently powerful server time should be minimal

    This is a prime example of a network computer and is what I think is the future...all your home appliances could be dumb clients with wireless connections to your server

    I think speech recognition is where this is taking us, but the software for that is too bulky and requires too many resources to run on a PDA, for now.

    Just send the voice packets to your central server, have it convert it and send it back.

    I think the real killer for OS/2 was that nobody would write native apps for it since it ran Windows apps.
    I also believe that Linux is not about world domination, its about having an operating system that is/has exactly what you want. And as long as there are geeks out there who love to build their own kernels Linux can never die.
    However, if "world domination" is what you want out of an OS then you must crush Windows. To do that, create an environment that makes it much easier to write native apps and drivers for linux, and tools that make it very easy to port them to windows.
    It's the applications that drive the OS and it was the way Bill made it easy for other companies to make money that made his OS the market leader.

    Also, it wouldn't work when hooked up to another computer...it seemed to be using some feedback from the er emitted by his box.

    first, do you reallly think your 4.7L V8 gets anywhere near 15mpg in NYC??
    second, I think mini vans are ugly, and if I needed the space, I'd probably go with an SUV also
    third, what I really dont like about SUVs is that most people get them 'cause they're "cool" and dont give a damn that they only use it to drive 5m/hr in traffic on their commute...it's like people that go out and buy the biggest and best computer they can get, just to surf the web and send email...and they only do that cause "everyone" is doing it
    fourth, jeeps i can understand, Mercedes-Benz M-class? who's really gonna take one of those off road? get a hummer!

    and I hate the whole term SUV, its a jeep wanna be.

    I've had nothing but problems with it so far...
    First, I have no floppy, so I downloaded just the loadlin/autoboot stuff and tried an NFS install...no such option, so I had to dl everything.
    Second, (not an actual problem, yet) I accidently said yes to booting into X, and I thought what the hell, it'll make it easier for my wife...
    Third, the gnome terminal has a memory leak when transparency is on...everytime I switched virtual desktops I lost a few K...I didn't realize that until my box slowed to a crawl....so I rebooted, which brings me to
    Fourth, upon reboot, xdm just flicks my monitor between video modes, and the only option is to reboot....and since I have no floppy..its back to dos, and loadlin to remove xdm.

    maybe its just me
