believe me, i am no amd weenie. and i have moderator points, that i could have used on that post, but decided to reply instead. that post was(is?) flamebaitish, the guy just spewed a bunch of stuff he admitted he had no evidence for. especially that part about amd having more performance...sheesh..;)
The Boundless WebPlayer might be something you'd be interested in. You can stick in a harddrive, plug in a USB nic, and you'd be ready to go. A buddy of mine managed to do all that, and he aint to swift. (hi ben)
If you are doing anything that requires performance, you shouldn't rely on the compiler. Intel has their "Integrated Performance Primitives" which give you a nice abstraction layer so you can wring the most power out of each processor without having to hand code asm for each one.
your post is interesting; because this claims that the p3m burns < 0.5W in the 300mhz "battery optimized mode". Even after throwing in the 1W your pc stats page claims for the north bridge chip, the p3m comes in under the crusoe. this claims about 1W under full load (audio/modem/etc). Interestingly enough though, the 440mx is a single component chipset, so now we have to figure in comsumption for a south bridge for the crusoe.
also, the first paper claims < 1.0W for the p3m at 533mhz, which is about equivalent to a 677mhz crusoe
anyway, its hard to judge what the total wattage each system would drain on average, and thus how much heat they would emit, but intel is much more competitive than you would lead us to believe.
I dont know why more people dont use cheap laptops for stuff like that since they take up so much less space (emit less heat etc.). And you should be able to find ones with broken screens for very cheap. Just hook em up to your kvm. And if you can scrounge up a bunch with broken screens, dead batteries, etc, you should be able to build a very cheap, very small beowulf cluster. (woohoo my first ever b.c. post!)
Its not a "real" country. Its part of the british commonwealth. The top of the governmental food chain is the queen. Or atleast the queen's representative here (Governer general? naw that cant be it).
Of course, I could be misremembering my grade 9 social studies. that was a long long time ago, and i slept through most of it.
a lot of people have been bringing up the CDN to USD difference here...but what you seem to fail to realize is that canadians get paid in canadian dollars, not US dollars.
still, 80 bucks is still a decent price all things considered.
How can i say this without sounding even more stupid? i probably cant...
I have to wait for all kinds of things, app loading is one. with all those spare cycle sspinning while i ponder what to type in this post, why cant the os be doing something now to cut down on my waiting later?
For example, every day i read my online comics, and i have to wait for them to be downloaded, decomressed, the page to be formated, x10 ads to popup, etc. When I get into work, and click my sluggy link, it should pop up instantly.
are you kidding, i am constantly waiting for apps to load
i'd like to see more research into sub second response time for anything i do with a computer. maybe put those spare cycle to work analyzing my patterns so that stuff i will want or need soon are loaded in the background.
I was just talking with someone today about how something like a speeding ticket to Bill Gates is no punishment at all.
But a public whipping would be pretty punishing no matter who you are (well maybe not to masochists)
So rather than come up with some arbitrarily large sum of money to punish Microsoft, maybe all the execs on the board should be publicly flogged.
It isnt more or less dangerous, but your existing anti-virus software would be useless, since the signatures that it looks for are gone. the virus is byte code, not assembly.
i would be Lancelot, hitting my sword against the french prostitute.
run away! run away!
It's not the /. post that's the giveaway, it's how he's posting about Rush.

No, I did not say hippocrats
ruled by horses?
The only thing "thrilling" about driving my '67 beetle, is fearing for my life at 60mph on the hwy.

dude, shrek was done by pdi/dreamworks. the same people who made antz.
here is a quick pic of it. Jean Chretien is cool.

Here is my idea, remember it well so you can dispute patents later.
Every station overlays shows these days with their logo in the bottom right.
Sell advertising overlays.
Imagine how much Coca-cola would pay to have their logo in the top right of your screen during the super bowl.
Its just so simple and obvious...there must be some catch somewhere or someone would already be doing it.
great now we'll start having flamewars over petion sites
gopetition vs. petiononline
when will the madness end?

i also bought them so i would have something i could watch with my kid (1.5 then, 3 now). we've also got toy story 2, the aristocats, and chicken run.

well apparantly that isnt enough of a discouragement to keep people from speeding
Uh no, they inflict misery and pain on others making them sadists.
Half of them probably dont even have computers

is a very cheap development platform for strong arm embedded linux type stuff...
which is what i did with my extremely sucky YOPY (which is now buried in the back of a drawer) but which cost >$700
