This sounds EXACTLY like my experience in the music business.
Here is what the record companies (VC's) want:
1. "Start up" a band with your own resources. 2. "Start up" a fan base by playing out. (They will not be interested in you unless your fan base includes opening for the Rolling Stones or having CitiBank as a client.) 3. Create your own hype so that the record company (VC) can no longer ignore you. 4. "Sign" with the record company (VC) and watch them take all the credit for "incubating" your talent.
BULLSHIT!
By the time you have achieved the success that the VC's or record companies want you to achieve to be involved with you... why would you ever want to be involved with them?!?
Will someone please hack the fuck out of/.'s subscription service so that we can all get it free so that CowboyNeil can see what happens when a whole community decides to take all of his work for free? It may be a healthy wake up call for him and a big cup of grow the fuck up and think everyone else's stuff except yours should be free.
This is the STUPId3ST POST I have seen on/. on 5 years.
ScentCone writes "Of course it was bound to happen, so now it's mostly a matter of discussing why Lucas does or does not deserve to make the proceeds, or whether people would or would not have gone to see it now that the usual path has been carved around the opening weekend box office."
So you raise the question "discussing why Lucas does or does not deserve to make the proceeds".
WTF
Where is the discussion in all of this? How about you look at your own business platform. Would you be psyched if someone made an instant.pdf of/. with no banners and all? It would be pretty tough for you to wonder why a guy "does or does not" deserve to get paid. How about if someone made the equivalent of the/. early service for free? Well... on your level you may not be able to buy a 800k home. You and all the/. owners may be stuck with apartments. So... Lucas does something bigger than anyone ever.. and you are going to question if he should be paid?
How about we all circumvent early/. membership and have a big party on your dime?
Not cool.
Not cool for you to even question a guy getting paid for his work.
why don't they just change everything to.porn; that way people with kids could simply block.porn..... and whoever owns a site now would simply change it to.porn.... sex.com owner would get sex.porn etc....
ok... stop looking at the artist and start looking at the companies that the artist work for. the band doesn't fly on the warner brothers jet, the warner brother's execs do. the bands don't live in bel air, the execs do. the bands don't give away 400 tickets for their shows, the execs do. what does all this mean? except for a very rare occurence when an artist becomes a mega start and it really is mute who gets what share, most bands live on very little and the execs take the spoils. do your research, this is true.
the only person cool enough to have a box like that is the guy that won quake con. he could own it just to piss people off... "i kicked yer ass on a girlie box, now what about that !!!! "
Uhhh yeah... no one ever went to Kinko's and used a zip? You can still get all yer Pee Cee and mac Filez that wasy if you are stuck on 56k and don't want to wait for Hotline.... Gimme a break.
I have an independent band (The Who/ SteelyDan-ish) and out of curiosity I went to see if any of my songs were on Napster. Sure enough, there were
a few people that had my band's songs from movie soundtracks, etc. To make a long story short: I messaged them "Hey! You have my tunes on your
server. If you like those, come check out http://www.currentuser.com/ and I'll send you some more for free!" Sure enough, all those users are now on my fan club mailing list. Why don't the big bands just use Napster to grab some fans for their fan sites? Keep them posted of shows, merchandise, etc.. From all that I read, the bands make their money on merchandising anyway; not on the cd's. BTW if you check my site: The record was recorded on a G3 with Cubase in my living room.

but you'd also have to have the "open safe items" turned on in safari prefs, and that is kinda dumb.
